Off work ill

I always make the effort to go in. Never actually turned around and gone back home but I think half the problem with calling in sick is the initial effort to get out of bed.

Personally, I despise lazy slackers that will take several periods of up to a week off for "flu". Doesn't help when you get 6 months full pay for sick.

Last time I took sick leave was about 5 years ago when I'd torn a muscle and ended up A&E in the early hours.

It's better people stay at home then spread their germs to the rest of the workforce. You are a jobsworth. Congratulations.

Personally I think there should be no sick pay for anyone - My betting would be that there are far less people off sick!

Would be nice :p

Problem with that is you will get people who will turn up and are genuinely ill but can't afford to miss a day or just don't want to lose out on the money, or someone that will come in ill and just be a useless worker all day.

Kind of related.. people who smoke/take smoking breaks.

I work with folk who take AT LEAST 5 a day, and each one is a minimum of ten minutes. Adds up! Should I start smoking so I have to work less?

So because I've never been genuinely ill, I'm a jobs worth?

I've felt crap, after a hard weekend and maybe had an upset stomach but I was having a go at those that get sniffles and call in sick.

You're not one of those are you? :D

Last time I had a sick day was in 2009 when I had an operation.
Even then I ignored the sick note and went back early.

Some people just take the ****. The worst are ones who have time off with work related stress! So a team of six which is swamped with work now is a team of five. Nice support there ****.

Either I have a better immune system, or I am less pathetic.
I am certain it is the latter, not the former. I am currently finding my job absolutely awful and really do not enjoy it...but I still have 100% attendance as I do not believe in random sick days.
To be off sick you need to be so ill that you just wish you were well and at work!

Smoking breaks??
Wouldn't happen if you worked for me. Smoke on designated breaks only.
I would not even provide them with a smoking area. Nor would I let them smoke in front of the business so the public can see them.

You do realise you are putting the other members of staff at risk?

But well done you

Yes but unless I'm told to go home then why should I?
When I've got a cold everybody can hear it and with the tummy bug I got it off another worker but don't resent her for it.

I'm sure that makes you feel very good but I doubt your co-workers appreciated you coming in when ill and potentially passing it on to them.

See above.

It's Dimple....he's one of 'those'. If you have a story he has seen or done better then you. Good for a laugh in a pub, but a bore otherwise.

Grow up
One day you might experience some life of your own.
And what have I ever done better than you? - Probably nothing.
Don't have such a low opinion of yourself.

I've always wondered why bosses tent to be so lenient towards smokers and allow multiple 5-10 min breaks. Do they have to allow people to smoke or something?

People eat crap, drink like a fish, don't get enough sleep, sit inside with the aircon on, don't get enough exercise...

Err shall I go on

How about I throw a curveball into the mix.

I have been in my current job nearly 2 years.....so am I owed a week off when I buy GTA5 in a few weeks?

It really does get to the point where I think, '**** it, it is my turn'.

Btw the only sickie I ever pulled was when I was 17 working at McDonald's.

There are a number of people where I currently work and previous work places that seem to be constantly off work sick.

In the past 6 of years I think I have had 1 day off and this was a 'sickie' for Summer olympics when I went to London.

Do you think this is down to poor immune systems, because people are more prone to illness or just pulling sickies?

There's a guy off at the moment due a serious problem (understandable he's off) but some just have the odd day every couple of weeks and are then usually in and fine the rest of the week.

It really grinds my gears, especially when other people have to take on their workload

OP you are going on about how people pulling sickies grind your gears, yet did it yourself!

No. Book the time off as a holiday, if you want it off.

Alternatively tell your employer you're taking sick leave to play a game :p

Employer gives me zero flexi-hours or flexi-holiday.
(I have no intent of pulling a sickie, this is just for the sake of argument!).

If everyone else has 1-2 days off per year then if I am simply not wuss enough to get ill (or as I am not a sissy a 'cold' is a cold not the flu) I am owed it?

In another hob there was a bloke who had 6 months off for a shoulder operation. I was expecting him to return with a full robotic Terminator 2 arm, but nope he was just milking the system.
