Mourinho spent his money incredibly badly, completely his fault, no more excuses frankly.
Real have some, semi decent midfielders and they have the likes of Diarra, he wasted money on Khedira, who apart from being utterly useless in his role, is half the player Diarra is and took money away from vastly more needed positions.
Marcelo/Ramos can't defend for poop, Arbeloa is only marginally better, Di Maria is like Malouda, can only play well when the whole team is clicking. Alonso spent the last 30 minutes of that game rather than calmly influencing the players around him and PASSING the ball forwards, just lumping it long, which produced nothing at all. Ozil's form has seemingly dissappeared, again for Germany he was great when the other players were great, when the team wasn't working perfectly he vanished while others tried incredibly hard and were still decent.
Real needed to sort their defence, sell Benzema, buy a real back up striker for Higuain and not waste money on area's they had covered in depth. Gago and a few of the others weren't the worlds best players, but Gago for instance was a hugely better midfielder than Marcelo is a defender. I mean, in the Real/Barca game, Khedira, Alonso, Marcelo, Ramos, Di Maria and Ozil was abysmal, the defensive players just made mistake after mistake after mistake, and the two wingers simply dissappeared. Gago/Diarra would have been FAR better in that game, for experience and strength, and had they spent the Khedira/Di Maria money on two full backs who could defend, maybe the game would have been completely different. Real have far too many weak positions and they strengthed in completely the wrong places.
Mourinho needed to come in and completely turn the defence around, but bought mostly attacking players, and too many of them young, inexperienced and not Ronaldo types, guys who can drag the team through a bad performance, which is what the Real side has needed for several years. Too many flash players who can't perform when its really tough.
Di Maria also makes Ronaldo look like a freaking saint on the pitch, Barca have Alves, Real have Di Maria, diving gits the both of them.
Real's board are ridiculous, but then Capello was fired for the dull football, not lack of success. Real see football as entertainment, winning with crap football simply doesn't cut it, thats their choice.
The question is, is Mourinho fully aware of the need for ultra attacking football and he's simply a manager not capable of it? Chelsea by the time he left was a team built on defence, Inter, ultra ultra ultra ultra defensive team, can he actually make a successful attacking team?
