***Official 2010 F1 thread***

if button to mclaren is true he will make a fine number 2 driver :)

This is what I think. The more I think about it, the more I think he would be great as a No.2 driver. The guy doesnt make any mistakes and has good pace (not great pace). He is exactly what Hamilton needs - someone who wont be as fast as him, but if Hamilton crashes out, then Button will pick up the batton.

He might be if he beats Hamilton next year. Funny thing about the future, no one knows what's going to happen.

If Button wins the title next year, I would hail Button as one of the greats. Ahead of Hamilton. Ahead of Alonso. No joke.

But I think we all know that isn't going to happen. ;)

Maybe because to be able to carry enough fuel for a whole race means the fuel tank must be much bigger and therefore make the car heavier ?!?

So you think the fuel tank is going to weigh between 30 - 45kg, I would be very surprised if it was that heavy (not quite a 1/10 of the overall weight)

But I think we all know that isn't going to happen. ;)

Everything is weighted against him at McLaren so its a pretty biased view

As I said earlier he managed to destroy Villeneuve in the BAR (although that wasnt a brilliant car) with far less experience

im not beeing anti button im beeing realistic.

he is not an all time great , he wont be remembered as one and he isnt even up there with the fastest drivers out of the current generation of above average drivers.

hes pretty much just the new coulthard so maybe in a few years he will be presenting

Thats just idiotic - I like Coulthard as a driver and a presenter, but he was never championship material (whether through team orders or even being close enough to No1 in every race)

I completely give up - whether its Monaco (which may be difficult to pass but still requires supreme concerntration), Turkey forcing Vettel into a very early mistake, or several other races this year where he obliterated the field , even some like Brazil where he stormed through the field (and even Martin stating how legendry some of the passes were - for recent cars) Button had an outstanding year, all you post about is knocking him down

If minimum weight of cars is with no fuel - whats the 15KG extra minimum weight going to be used for (from 605kg to 620kg)?

Or from another angle - without changing anything else how much extra does a "long wheel base" version of the same car weigh?

As has been said, it is for kers. so heavier drivers can actually use it, without going over the weight limit.

Hang on. Are you suggesting that Button is an all-time great or that he is in the same category as Hamilton or Alonso?

so there is a 15kg "hole" if the gentleman's agreement is continued......
rather than carry dead weight / ballast I wonder what else it could be used for

I didnt mention either of those names in that post - but he is unquestionably better than Coulthard (and most if not all of the "mid -grid" drivers that JB was being included with in post I quoted

I would also suggest that the 2nd half of the season would look totally different if the Brawn had been developed to favour him instead of Barrichello (but because Rubens through his toys out of the pram twice, that possibility went out of the window)

wait a second button is championship material? if he was he would probably be winning more championships in the next few years but i bet everyone would agree he wont be.

coulthard was a perfectly good driver and he had some good overtakes but he wasnt a championship winning driver at the time but i bet if he was in f1 now he probably would be faster than most lets not forget he raced at a far more competitive time.

i think comparing button to him is very generous of me.

It will be used for ballast, you can never have to much ballast. Thing is cars are made as light as possible. So all the people saying just make the cars lighter to run kers this year, just couldn't happen.

.

We will find out next season. He has beaten his team mates numoures times, but until this season has never had the car. Next year if he even keeps in touch with Hamilton, he will be a multiple world championship contender.

Jenson will win it again next season. There I said it. You're wrong :)

he raced at a far more competitive time.

 cars are closer together than ever and you have some great drivers. Alonso, hamilton, massa, kimi(when he got the urge to race again), then you have up and coming Jenson, vettle, kubica. It's a tighter field now than it has been for years. Just look at how close he cars where in terms of lap times this season.

Vote For Your Top 5 Drivers of 2009

This was mine:

1. Hamilton
2. Button
3. Raikonnen
4. Vettel
5. Barrichello

I'd have loved to have put in Alonso in that list, but he simply didn't do anything of note in 2009. His reputation will seriously be on the line next year and he knows it.

It wouldn't surprise me if Alonso and Ferrari feel that winning the titles next year is an absolute must, in order to keep the reputations of both team and driver in tact.
