The bit I don’t understand is why they don’t just put the cars on trolleys in the pits and shift them to the right place.

Edit - or send all of the cars out at the same time and reshuffle on track.

It was and is to prevent everyone running in to the pits for the preferred inter tyre, once the safety car goes in.

This had genuinely been a good race to watch, until Zhou binned it.
So often we see management, and farcical decisions cocking it all up.

It's a transponder/timing line/software issue. F1 has had it for years unfortunately and why they haven't changed it I don't know.

WEC/Lemans can do it (Give/take laps away, adjust timing order) and I could even do it on Karting Transponders a few years ago when I helped run a Karting Centre.
