Apparently Mercedes took the 'interpretation of the rules' stance, can't think why ;)

Multiple people seem to be intimating that Mercedes vetoed any potential derogation of the rules but, as I understood it, the teams were never asked as the stewards said the rules were clear and there was no provision for any exemption.

Anyone actually surprised that this event has been a complete ****show?

I've seen quite a lot of angry people who paid for Thursday tickets as their first experience of F1 in person and got to see 8 minutes of cars on track. With the cheapest ticket it works out at a total bargain of $25 a minute.

The entirely predictable farce aside, I actually think this looks like it is likely to be a good race. The track looks challenging, varied, and wide enough in a lot of places to allow passing. I just hope they haven't chosen DRS zones at the usual overpowered setting.

They did mention something on the Sky converage about one of the teams not allowing the "bypass" of the rules in this instance, and the McLaren boss geezer saying he could guess who veto'd it..

Looking at the circuit and considering none of them have ever driven it before, it would seem that the chances of someone finding the wall and there being a red flag/safety car are pretty high.

I feel it looks like just another street circuit. I mean they have to place so much barrier all around the track (obviously) that local architecture/buildings/attractions/landmarks are not really recognizable or adding any value. I mean it could be any city at night unless you zoom properly far out. I don't see it as the big spectacle perhaps some were expecting so far. I would say Singapore looks more impressive.
The track itself looks basic and boring as expected.
However...
The race might be awesome. They've become quite hard to predict what with DRS, Deg and very narrow performance windows. So let's see I guess.

Ooo, that cover isn't as big as you think. It's very deep but it's certainly not wide enough for someone to go down.

So I’m a fairly newish F1 fan, probably 4 years or so now… but what’s stopping Ferrari suing the track owners? Like that level of damage causing issues to the cost cap is wholly unfair. I get the lack of deviation from the rules but the fact Ferrari and Alpine wont be compensated seems wholly unfair.

About the same size as a piece of Debris that happened to whack Massa, almost into retirement.
Are you referring to the heave spring off the Barrichello's Brawn? It really isn't.

Looking at the various pictures, I'm pretty sure the cover is about 8-9" across, 4-5" deep and like most covers like that, made from cast iron.

Yeah. Maybe heavier/smaller? A lot more damage could be done in the wrong circumstances.
I’d genuinely forgotten about that Massa incident until watching the Brawn documentary. A horrific freak accident, but it can happen. The sport does a lot to make racing worse when it doesn’t need to, but giant pieces of metal flying around are an absolute no.
