I feel it looks like just another street circuit. I mean they have to place so much barrier all around the track (obviously) that local architecture/buildings/attractions/landmarks are not really recognizable or adding any value. I mean it could be any city at night unless you zoom properly far out. I don't see it as the big spectacle perhaps some were expecting so far. I would say Singapore looks more impressive.
The track itself looks basic and boring as expected.
Yeah this. Although I'm sure we'll get some great helicopter shots during the race.. (probably whilst the only overtaking is happening knowing the current skills of the TV directors :p )
Ha sort of the same. Ive never been a great fan of his personaity, but his increasing willingness to **** on the rubbish aspects of F1 is quite endearing.
Well, he needs to be careful really. No sport is going to be happy with the current 'champion' publicly ****ing all over it. And no fan of the sport is going to be happy with somebody doing an impression of a moody teenager on the podium all of the time. And he should also remember that the only reason he gets paid his $50m or whatever it is, is because of stuff like this.
So I’m a fairly newish F1 fan, probably 4 years or so now… but what’s stopping Ferrari suing the track owners? Like that level of damage causing issues to the cost cap is wholly unfair. I get the lack of deviation from the rules but the fact Ferrari and Alpine wont be compensated seems wholly unfair.
It was suggested in a question to Fred in the press conference. Funnily enough Toto leaned over and whispered something in his ear before he answered, I wonder if he was calming him down before he said anything silly :D
but giant pieces of metal flying around are an absolute no.
So maybe let's race on proper circuits :o

Are you referring to the heave spring off the Barrichello's Brawn? It really isn't.

Looking at the various pictures, I'm pretty sure the cover is about 8-9" across, 4-5" deep and like most covers like that, made from cast iron.
How is it not? Yes it may be larger, but it poses identical risks, if not more due to the increase in size. Prev comments were about the size of the cover and its not that large but my point was, that neither was the piece that hit Massa.
Travelling in excess of 150mph, its going to damage regardless and I wouldnt want to get hit in the head with either, neither should you.

Yeah. Maybe heavier/smaller? A lot more damage could be done in the wrong circumstances.
I’d genuinely forgotten about that Massa incident until watching the Brawn documentary. A horrific freak accident, but it can happen. The sport does a lot to make racing worse when it doesn’t need to, but giant pieces of metal flying around are an absolute no.
I think the piece that hit Massa would have been lighter and made of a softer composition, compared to these possible cast iron covers. Sizes are not too far apart.
The Massa incident was one of the first times I'd watched practise sessions and not just quali/race format, but yeah the risks are insane with having any form of metal loose on a track.

They're probably obligated to run regardless due to their sponsorship contracts.
Given how badly been f’d over by this farce of a race, I think they’d happily take it on the chin. Would be a great show of protest. They’re not exactly the force they once were, but they’re still one of the most important teams in the series.

Edit: Would also likely get more TV coverage than they would on a normal race weekend. :D

It's just laughable how easy it was to predict something would go catastrophically wrong. I made a joke with a friend that they'd fail pre track inspection, which given a drain cover came up, it probably should have failed. I'm all for more races and even more races in the US, look how many we have in europe it gives US fans the same chance we get to watch races but I do think they should have been smarter and not gone for a street circtuit let alone somewhere like Vegas. The other thing I don't get here is the time, they've made it inaccessible for pretty much all of the US but west coast to watch as it's so late for them, then also cuts europe off mostly as its the crack of dawn. I get it's money but you'd think a race time everyone can watch and a location people can afford to go would bring in more than whatever Vegas was offering.

Am I still getting up at 5am on Sunday to watch the painful grid walk? Absolutely.

It has been a bit of a balls up but I’m still in favour of racing there. However, for $1bn they probably could have built a permanent circuit next to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway or somewhere else outside the city. Granted it wouldn’t be as cool as driving down the Strip.

Hopefully nothing else goes wrong!

Stupid that Sainz has a penalties due to a track issue through no fault of his own or Ferrari. They’ll have to update the rules for that.

Aye but by that arguement when Stroll or someone decides to barrell into the side of another driver you don't expect free parts for the victim, just a part of racing that teams/drivers can't control.

It doesn't look quite as spectacular as I thought it might... at least not from the normal track cameras. Some of the drone shots look epic but you don't really see much of Vegas when the cameras are down low bar that one shot of the sphere they are using a lot.

On a side note... F1 needs more static cams, they capture the speed of F1 cars far better than any other form of camera and yet the live feed seems allergic to them.

They could have upgraded all of Road America , Laguna , VIR and Watkins for less and still had the chance to pull in crowds from all over the US without all the daftness we are seeing trying to run on the strip.

I just dont get these street circuits where all you can see is concrete and catch fencing, its not very iconic and very forgettable. Miami just looked like a load of concrete overpasses and warehouses, it could have been anywhere, the Middle Eastern races the same, they all blend into one.

Vegas even with the neon on the strip doesnt look much better, you can see why it wasnt during the daytime, a load of carparks and hotels with a few weird shaped buildings.
