Very much colder than previous years, I wonder if that's a factor.
Are the times close to what the ultimate times were in testing? What Zak has just stated is interesting...

Fastest time in testing was a 1:29.9 by Sainz on day 2. No idea how the weather compares from then to now though.

If Zak Brown is right then Red Bull and Ferrari have yet to turn up their engines, while Merc have.

I can't believe Merc are this fast.compared to RB so this likely is the case. Don't know how much turning the engines up would add though.

Compared to last years' FP2, Lewis is half a second faster than Alonso who finished top last year in the equivalent session. Compared to testing, Lewis' time is almost the same as Russell's fastest time from testing (which was quite a bit faster than Hamilton's). Sainz set a faster time, but he did it on tyres that aren't available for the race weekend.

Wouldn't the speed traps show if engines are turned up or not ?

I don't see much difference in their speed trap speeds. But the Live Timing only gives current lap values as they come up.

Hopefully it is closer than expected, I was thinking red bull would the best part of a second faster.

They probably are. We'll find out tomorrow.

It does get to the point where it does seem to be a bit pointless sandbagging and not showing your true speed. I mean what are teams realistically going to do overnight ffs? It's not like teams are going to see Red Bull be 2 seconds a lap faster and then suddenly only then do their best work to fix it and come back with a car 3 seconds a lap faster. Showing other teams that you are actually fast a day before quali is not really going to hamper ay strategy or anything. What do you guys think?

Its early in the season, and there's a lot of "saving" done these days to things like the engine and other parts given the component limits.
Some teams (and I say teams because I suspect Ferrari have done the same) will do any little thing to eek out an longer term advantage.

Totally true yeah. Good point. Component life span and engine limits. I guess each time they send the engine full beans they take away irrepairable life from engine internals as they stretch/contract/expand.
