Totally true yeah. Good point. Component life span and engine limits. I guess each time they send the engine full beans they take away irrepairable life from engine internals as they stretch/contract/expand.

Especially if they suspect they're much faster and don't actually need to be doing much more running (esp after 3 days at the same track last week)

I don't think we're likely to be seeing any real difference in engine modes from the teams. It's not like it used to be where they had a dozen engine modes they could choose on the fly, and Merc had a special quali mode they'd only roll out for those few laps. Everyone will want to get the best data out of practice and everyone will want to spare the engines if they can. Since everyone is in the same boat, I don't see there being a great deal of incentive for particular teams to hide or show pace.

As @jaybee says, it's not like they're giving anything away to the other teams when everyone gets their tape measures out tomorrow anyway.

That doesn't mean practice is a straight reflection - teams will still have been running different programmes, etc.

Why oh why is that team called "RB"

That's just a confusion fest
Yeah surely VCARB would work better for commentators. But can they not say sponsor names or something on the broadcast? Thought someone said that when the news first came out.

As for the results, I’ve been at an offsite so no idea what’s going on. But I did read a comment that made a good point - Verstappen would never actually sandbag would he? He always wants fastest lap, he was consistently fastest in every practice last year without fail (to the point where you just wanted to tell him to chill out, he’s already won the championship). Food for thought. But I still think RB (no that one) will be top come qualifying.

Although in Bahrain last year Max didn't top anything until Qualifying

However according to the data Zak saw he stated that it looked very much like both the Red Bull and the Ferrari's were using a lower engine mode and we don't have access to this data. If Zak says they have different modes then surely it must be true. Isn't it called strat mode which alters the deployment? Thus it make sense to reduce the strain upon an engine so as to preserve it longevity when in practise sessions.
They can set different modes from the steering wheel, as teams cannot do this remotely anymore as this was banned.

I guess all will be revealed tomorrow...

RB have no reason to sandbag surely? It sounded like Max was genuinely unhappy with the setup. I’m sure they’ll nail it and qualify miles ahead. It’ll be more interesting if they don’t.

Do the C4 highlights appear on their streaming app?

Unfortunately, i think the fact that Hulkenberg and Stroll got virtually the same time as Max shows that the RB almost certainly has massive amounts more left in the tank....

Max would be better than those two even in the same car, so judging anything by that time is saying the RB is worse than the Aston, and even the Haas car....

The party mode that was used solely for qualifying more successfully by Mercedes was banned https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/...why-do-they-matter.OI3cSGqWS6mONcBHUFncL.html
But there are still strat modes..

The confusion for me is I thought there was supposed to only be 1 mode. From the article linked:

Admittedly I haven’t read the technical directive…

Be interesting to see how the first few races pan out. It would be nice to see some strong competition this season even though i am an RB fan. Hoping Alonso can get up there too. Be nice to see him on the podium.
Alonso seems to be very lowkey at the moment, similar to Max - will be interesting to see where they're at once everything is turned up.

I think the idea was that you can't have a mode that only runs in quali i.e. if you use the mode in quali, you have to run it in the race, which Merc weren't doing as it would nuke the engine.

That is correct, but there are different modes, called strats, that can be used in testing and practices.
But no party mode that can be used in qualification and occasionally in the races.
