*** Official 500m Rowing Challenge***

Excellent time Freefaller!!

Are you a rower at all or just a mega gym rat?

You will be proud to know you pumped out 564Watts on that piece.

Google says 1 horsepower is 745Watts so I make you out to be 0.75 horsepower unit :D

I updated the list and put on the powers:

Time Power

82.9s 614.33W MBennett
85.3s 563.92W Freefaller
88.4s 506.65W burrell
91.1s 462.93W sorn1
92s 449.47W Moses
93.4 429.56W platypus
100s 350.00W SDK
100s 350.00W sorn21
101s 339.71W dod
104.9 303.21W tom_e
133.7 146.44W Sigma

Power calc is here: http://concept2.co.uk/training/guide/watts_conversion

Also how are some of you getting 100th of a second recorded - i will have to double check but im sure the concept 2 only records 10ths :S

SPW and I may give this a bash tonight! :D

We did give it a bash and as Freefaller has posted his time is mighty impressive, I managed a rather more pedestrian 1:39.6 so just dipped under the 1:40 mark but it's a little bit lower than I'd hoped. I may try this again in the next few weeks if the specialist doesn't veto it - or maybe I just won't tell him. :D

Is there anything you're not good at FF? :D

How did the semi-pro-wrestler do?

haha - I'm rubbish at running! :D Well I can run, but very slowly :p

Probably more of a mega gym rat (and reasonably fit) than a rower, though I used to row at uni but that was over 10 years ago now. I still do some rowing on the machines, but not as much as I used to.

I'm nearly as powerful as a horse! Nice! :D I sure can eat like one!

I had a right good sweat on in the hotel gym tonight - Concept 2, level 6.

Now, big up you rowing racing snakes  My first attempt was 2:00:8 and I was disappointed not to get under two minutes, so had another crack. Managed 2:00:4 that time - grrr! Perhaps I shouldn't have done 30 minutes on a bike first.... Shame I've only got one night in the hotel this time

If you managed to have 2 attempts in the same session at the same time that suggest you maybe didn't perform your best.

I'd suggest reading MBennets post on the last page for a decent warm up, you may want to do the same but scaled down as the faster you go the more of a warm up you need. All in all good effort though.

Nice time FF, i've seen you're a bit of a Gym rat but didn't expect that! Given me a new target. :D

I honestly didnt expect that time either. I've always been more of sprinter than a long distance runner. I just went hell for leather and let my fairly powerful strokes do the rest (pretty strong legs and back). It was more to do with strength and speed at which I was pulling than technique or fitness. I suspect it was possibly a fluke. I will give it a go again next week though.

2 minutes isn't too bad (excuse the pun) you're not last!

I feel sorry for the poor rowing machine! :p

Excellent work guys!
FF that's an impressive time, maybe I should have asked you for evidence :p

I'm going to have a bash again tomorrow see if I can get a sub 30 time.. :)

haha! Well happy to get it recorded next time ;) But it'd be an ugly video and far too embarrassing! :p

You'll just have to take my word and SPW's for now! :p

What settings did you use FF?

As SPW said, we both set it to 6. :)

After knowing you'd be powerful, and seeing your 1500m time, I knew you'd do really well - didn't want to say, in case you crashed and burned, though! :p

---

I'd completely forgotten about drag factor, so I'll do an attempt with that sorted in a bit. Fourth place will be mine!

Actually his 1500m time does not correlate particularly well to his 500m time!
His predicted time from that 1500m (5:15) is 1:37.1

Predicted 1500m from his 1:25.3 500m is actually now 4:39.7!, time to redo that one Freefaller me thinks ;)

Tried this today. Got 1:45:00 First time on the rower for months! I also went on right at the end of my session when I was tired, so I reckon I could get it down a fair bit more. I should be able to get it down to 1:35 ish with a bit of luck.

Edit, that's on a Concept2 on highest resistance. :)

Felt a bit tired today, didn't sleep well last night.
Managed to knock 0.6s of my time - down to 1:22.3 now :)

Also thought I should post proof of it, Freefaller has a witness for his so here it is:

I set up to show the individual 100m splits, clearly I die in the last 100m

I had a proper try today, but my body felt like it was holding back and I couldn't exert as much as I wanted, weird, ended up with 1.31.4 which is .3 of a second slower than previous! Oh well.. Updated the list with new times. :)

1:33.1 for me.
I started of at a sub 1:30 pace but couldn't sustain it. I don't think I was even rowing when I crossed the finish line. My lungs were on fire and I needed a blast of my puffa when I'd finished! Not rowed or done any CV for a while.

Damper setting was 10, not that it matters.
