** Official 680 review thread **

Is it fair to say that now pretty much all games currently available reach 60fps or more on average with this card, or an overclocked 7970 that either one of these are perfect for 1920x1080 gaming? as after this I guess the next step is for future cards to reach 100fps, but i'm really considering jumping to this from my 560Ti and being able to keep it for the next 2/3 years without needing to change again, as I game at 1920x1080, what would you guys recommend? thank you :)

If you have the money, I'd get a 680. At 1080p it'll have no problems :)

Well I game at 1080P and this looks like the perfect card for that rez. Will probably get one when the price falls.

I was thinking of selling it on and replacing it for a 680 but having seen the reviews, the 680 is not as good as I was hoping it would be. The only thing the 680 has over the 7970 is lower power consumption, lower temps and is quieter.

The performance difference in games is so small, and at my resolution of 2560x1440, the performance gap between the cards narrows even further.

The 7970 has more VRAM, and higher compute performance.

However, I do miss CUDA, and to a lesser extent PhysX - especially in games like Batman where I can easily notice the difference with it off.

Would you stick with the 7970, or swap to the 680? Decisions decisions.
 
Depends what res you play at, how much you care about settings and of course how much money you have!

My 580 runs BF3 fine, but there are occasions where it drops below 60fps and as low as 40fps. For most games I wouldn't bat an eyelid, but when playing BF3 I want all the performance I can get, without having to compromising on image quality. Anything below 60fps is quite jarring to my eyes.

You would be mad to swap tbh as theres not much in it.
 
I'm guessing the 7970 is still more appropriate for ppl with 30" monitors and eyefinity setups with its 3gb of memory?

I urge any one thinking of doing this to go and read the review on Overclock3D.

In that review Tom pushes the 680 higher than they did on other sites (over 1200 on boost) and the results are certainly NOT in favour of the 680 when benchmarked against an overclocked 7970.

Infact, I see the 7970 winning in Dirt 3, AVP, Metro, Mafia 2 Heaven and possibly a couple of others.

The 7970 is just as fast as the 680, and wins as much as it loses and vice versa.

7970 owners need to realise that most of these reviews ARE NOT based around what the 7970 does when it is overclocked.

And given that here on OCUK people DO KNOW how to manually overclock a card themselves they may be fooled by these reviews.

So again, I strongly, strongly urge you to go and read the review on OC3D. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I consider it to be a very fair review, given that the 680 is overclocked out of the box. Thus, it really ought to be either locked at the stock clocks OR the 7970 should be overclocked also.

Then remember that your card (the 7970) has more vram which will help you in the future, so "upgrading" to a 680 could end up being the complete opposite.
 
If this is a mid-range card why is the price so high? Shouldn't it be around £250
like the GTX 570?

No, because it's been branded as the high end card, thus X80.
But the core was destined for the mid range, you can obviously tell this, it's small, 2 6 pins and is very low power usage.

Yep but it would not have been released now and i have a feeling it would not get anywhere near the clocks you are seeing atm. Its a top end card at this time of the year and a mid end later in the year. You will get this card for mid end prices but you have to wait thats all.

You don't know that though.
For all we know the delay is the change of direction with Nvidia, flashing the 660's to 680's, etc, etc.
We also can't judge overclocking either, the 4XX all OC'ed fine, as did the 570's, better than the 5XXX and 6XXX percentage wise and percentage gain wise.

They've then got the previous GTX680 ready to launch as a refined GTX780, giving we're stuck on 28nm.

Makes far more sense than "Nvidia couldn't bring a high end to the table"
 
Nothing about the 680 says high end to me apart from the benchmark results.

It's small, and it has a tiny die. Nvidia are known to produce huge dies for their top end cards. It only has two 6 pins and has specs that are inferior to the 7970. Nvidia are known for having some incredible paper specs.

So unless they are winding back matching a 7970 is pretty underwhelming really.
