****Official 6850/6870 Reviews thread****

Somehow I can't bring myself to care about core size aslong as nVidia keeps delivering good performing cards.

Lets hope that Nvidia dont share those thoughts! If Nvidia are forced to use a 530mm2 core to compete with AMD's midrange cores then it's game over in the GFX card business.

"Hello tessellation, when will we see you in any game, ever?"

When consoles can do it- i.e next gen!

GTX470 OC'd from 607->800MHz (31%), running forced 32x TRAA, High Quality texture and filtering settings in driver - showing a 25% performance gain. From other games I see gains between 21% and 29% from the same overclock. I think thats gonna make quite a difference over the 3-6% actual performance gains that have been seen so far from 6870 overclocks... tho granted when more reviews are out we may see cards capable of being pushed more. This is a distinctly average GTX470 overclock tho.

That is benchmark not a game & a benchmark that is known to have very good scaling which is not based on your average game.

Its not as dramatic as you think - AMDs current design doesn't scale performance wise if you push the die up like that as much as some people seem to think - there is a reason why they haven't done this already.

They havent done it as there was no competition. Now that they got something to aim for. ie 480gtx there will be some seriours tears.

6970 will have 1920sp. ouch thats 6850x2 with 7Ghz DDR5

Amazing performance for its size!!!! but lets see results from other external testers before we go ahead buying stuff.

Batman AA: 23% higher min fps, 21% higher max, granted only 11% higher average but due to the PhysX useage its notoriously hard to get the average up at all let alone 10+%. Drop the PhysX down a bit and you get around 25% scaling.

Mafia 2: Approx 21% higher average fps in the benchmark tho due to the way its calculated that could be out by 5-15%, gameplay footage shows approx 20-28% performance gains depending on the area you are in.

Mass Effect 2: Depending on the area your in approx 25% gains, tho in some areas drops down to 12% - in some areas seeing 33% gains from a 31% OC not quite sure whats happening there but as VRAM clocks are increased too (1674 to 2000) it may have something to do with it.

Off the top of my head I think Farcry 2 was about 26% gains from a 31% overclock depending on the settings... granted there are some games where the gains are more like 10-11% - I could go on and on. The fact is an OC on a GTX470 will massively change the story.

can someone work out the percentage overlclock on this my maths is terrible lol

I thought my rig was going to explode running eunigine at max settings lol

got a mk-13 coming tommorrow so hopefully can push for more voltage and lower the temps a little

Alittle part of be wonders if i should get a 460 GTX and wait for 2nd gen highend cards from nvidia so i can use phsyx but then again i have the money for a 6970 on launch :) and i want to finally get rid of my microshutter problems on GTA4 GRR.

I'm confused... is the 6870 REALLY £200? I'm sitting here mouth open... a whole £100 off the 5870 with more performance? I bet Nvidia are shaking in their boots :D

18% Performance gain from a 31% OC. Heaven isn't the best example for actual game scaling from AMD tho*, while despite what some people say it is a fairly good example of what nVidia cards are capable of in shader rich games.

* AMD's performance in Heaven is very different to nVidias - it tends to suffer heavily (as your min fps show) in tessellation rich areas but put up massive fps in predominantly shader rich areas which pulls up the average and max fps quite a lot - whereas nvidia tends to have more consistant fps across all areas without dropping so badly or peaking so high.

I dont think they out perform the 5870, we need some reviews, this number malarky seems dodgy to me
