****Official 6850/6870 Reviews thread****

The 5870 follow up is the 6970 iirc

The 6850 and 6870 are new cards to counter the 460 mostly. AMD/ATi used to have quite a big gap in their product range between the 5770 and the 5850, with the only thing to cover it was the 5830 which wasn't the best.

Actually I will say it does strike me as somewhat underhanded to put the cards on sale, with their new name scheme which to the uninformed suggests a performance increase over their previous generation, presumably before allowing reviews to be published (I say this since Guru3d's review is now down).

As i understand it they don't outperform the 5870s, the numbering is misleading this first batch of 6xxx is the replacements for the 57xx series and the next batch to be released (69xx) will be the replacements for the 58xx series. They have done this to leave room for a 3rd wave of low end cards which will be called the 67xx series. Confusing i know but still, the performence of these new cards is very very nice especially taking these facts into consideration roll on 69xx!!!

Its not as dramatic as you think - AMDs current design doesn't scale performance wise if you push the die up like that as much as some people seem to think - there is a reason why they haven't done this already.

No, instead they drop the core size by nearly 40% and maintain very similar performance.

Well it seems thats a good result in them reviews for dirt 2, crossfire 6870 is only 11 fps behind 480 sli

2x6870's = £356.44
2x480's = £679.98

A saving of £323.54 for 11 fps less

few benches from anandtech's review, (picked these as they are the only games i play that they reviewed)

shows the 6870 and 470 tied @ 55.9 fps each on bc2 but the 470 beats it on dirt2, the EVGA 460 looks impressive on dirt2, 470 scaling is pretty bad, id like to have seen 480sli on the list
CF scaling has improved nicely.. infact in bc2 its only 0.3fps away from 100% scaling :o

Batman AA: 23% higher min fps, 21% higher max, granted only 11% higher average but due to the PhysX useage its notoriously hard to get the average up at all let alone 10+%. Drop the PhysX down a bit and you get around 25% scaling.

Mafia 2: Approx 21% higher average fps in the benchmark tho due to the way its calculated that could be out by 5-15%, gameplay footage shows approx 20-28% performance gains depending on the area you are in.

Mass Effect 2: Depending on the area your in approx 25% gains, tho in some areas drops down to 12% - in some areas seeing 33% gains from a 31% OC not quite sure whats happening there but as VRAM clocks are increased too (1674 to 2000) it may have something to do with it.

Off the top of my head I think Farcry 2 was about 26% gains from a 31% overclock depending on the settings... granted there are some games where the gains are more like 10-11% - I could go on and on. The fact is an OC on a GTX470 will massively change the story.

If that is true then all well & good.

It indeed could be seen like that & im concerned that there maybe a few who go 5870-6870 but really im sure that most who buy cards in that bracket do look at reviews first.

Most PC gamers do not blindly spend that kind of money.
