****Official 6850/6870 Reviews thread****

Tbh, if a 6870 is very close to a 5870... then a 6970 will tottaly blow it out the water, along with the 480GTX and any new Nvidia card (if they can actually pull one out there arse thats not made of wood)

and the 6990 will be even faster if the scailing of the 6870 is anything to go on.

Sorry raven... but AMD just won this round crazy style

Certainly looking good for the 69**

Regarding guru3d, I don't value their reviews much at all, let's wait for some decent site reviews.

I'm going by OCUK and Guru results, they couldn't break 960 on the core, now that may change if we can up the volts but the 470 looks to be the better buy if you intend to overclock, no overclocking then the 6870 maybe the better buy depending on where you regard physx and 3D vision in the grand scheme of things.

Make your mind up.

So it suddenly dawns on me they can almost match a 1600 shader part with just 1120 shaders. Say Cayman has 1920 shaders, and we've all been suspecting it'll just be 30% faster than the 5870... :p

We can thank Nvidia for that with the 460 and 470 price drops, AMD reacted.
Doubt that AMD reacted to any Nvidia price drops, more like Nvidia reacting to AMD's launch of the 6 series with another paper aeroplane that is: 'the GeForce GTX 580, based on the new GF110 silicon, is poised for at least a paper-launch by end of November, or early December, 2010.' http://www.techpowerup.com/133114/GeForce-GTX-580-Expected-to-be-20-Faster-than-GeForce-GTX-480.html

Also that it's utter farcicle (An idea so idiotic, the limbic system by direct veto shuts down the higher centres of the brain and freezes all physical output – barring a single, jarring fart.) that one review leads to the conclusion that although the 6870 may not have OC well on this occasion on stock volts, would then mean that the rest of the run won't OC too.

The power consumption of these new cards is amazing.

Thinking about it your probably correct. But it just feels a bit weird them releasing a 6870 which is slower in most titles than the 5870. Maybe if they released them as 6830 and 6850 respectively it would be more suited to their performance.

I know if your spending 200 odd quid on a card your would be naive to not look at reviews beforehand, but this will happen to a lot of non enthusiasts who take graphics cards a bit to seriously.

I can't understand this logic though, people who feel like upgrading from previous generation to the following one are usually prepared to either spend the same amount of money as before (minus the revenue from selling the current card) and gain noticeable performance boost (in this case it would be going from 5870 to 6950 or from 5850 to 6870) or are willing to do a side-step for whatever reason and would go from a 5870 (that was £300 and over for ages) to 6870 that is released at sub-£200 point.

Another thing to note, 5850 will soon no longer be sold. And it's not dropped in price either, meaning that it's not taken into account on the current market. That leaves the only competition from Nvidia and seeing the reviews, you can clearly tell that these cards are able to compete with current mainstream releases.

read what Gibbo posted, AMD dropped the price when they had wind of the Nvidia price cuts.
