**Official** Aion RELEASE Thread

I agree queue's are good for server stability, the problem is the speed at which the queues move. If people can stay ingame indefinitly by making a shop then slots cycle a lot slow than in previous MMO's that had time outs for inactivity.

Yes WAR, EQ2, WoW all had queue's at launch but in the main part you moved through those queues quicker (in WAR case even quicker thats to a lot of crash to desktop bugs).

The queue problem will calm eventually, as people move around servers or quit.

I agree that making the shops timeout is a good idea (although I use the shops to stay ingame when I am afk too ). Course the trouble is people will always find ways to stay "active" ingame, we all remember the old trick of facing a wall with autorun enabled for instance.

You're right though, the queuing will die down, its mainly just because we are in the first 48 hours of "release". Having said that, I expect this weekend will be a total nightmare for queues. Thing is of course, WoW had the queues too at release, but talk to people now and most of them dont even remember the queues. One of the good things about MMOs is their longevity, when you are playing an MMO for upwards of 18months what happens in the first 1,2 weeks is forgotten in the long term.

I still remember having to make sure we were all logged in an hour before so we wouldnt miss a raid to MC due to the queues, then there was the waiting for people who were late and stuck in the queue, fun times ;)

I actually got my pre-order key today  but i think i'll be waiting till the DVD arrives instead, explaining a 6gig d/l to the wife and then getting the game in a few days will be hard to sell. Plus i'll be able to play with the action figure while i wait in the queue ;)

rolled Asmo on telemachus, Level 19 sorc atm under the name Cerissa;) feel free to add me :p had a few bits of lag today but nothing serious and no queue times :D

i got my preorder items last night, all pretty self explanatory apart from the ring.

The description says its an event item and when activated just says "you sense water nearby" and i get a blue halo around my char. Anyone know what the ring does?

I am in, on spata as a mage, joined the OcUK guild forum too, just need an invite if anyone is around.

Game name is Brackish.

+10 water resistance for 1 hour.

Players experienced what were described by some of extremely long queue times to take part in Aion's head start on Sunday. Can you speak to this?

Brian Knox:

With [Sunday]'s launch, we saw a massive influx into the game when we opened the servers for Head Start. It's important to remember that this initial rush is due to everyone trying to get into the game at the same time - this isn't a scenario that's likely to be repeated regularly since it's really just about that initial rush of players trying to gain access to the game. That being said, we are actively monitoring and tracking the stats to ensure optimal experiences for players. As you well know, it's a delicate balance between keep our servers healthy and maintaining a optimal experience for players.

Why were queue times necessary at all. As this event was for pre-order customers only, why wasn't it easy to predict exactly how many servers would be necessary to make sure that players weren't waiting in line?

Brian Knox:

There are numbers and stats that help us predict servers. We know what our average percentage of users is per active accounts at a peak time based off our beta events and our other products. We know how many users our servers can handle at capacity, and we know how many users makes for an ideal game play experience in Aion. Most importantly we know that there will never be a time when every single Aion customer wants to log in and play all at once than when we first turn on the servers. All of these go into picking the correct server count and the right time to spin up new servers.

We had to keep max server capacity low at first because everyone was crammed at the starting area. Had we opened it up to everyone, no one could have progressed. As the day went on, we opened up the servers more and more. We want to ensure that our servers are healthy during Head Start, but also once a retail code is applied. These next few days we will be calculating data and weighing the ideal time to open more servers. I think that the community will understand that in a game with PvPvE how important a healthy populated server is and that we do not want to go down the low pop server path...

What, to the best of your knowledge, was the average wait time for players at its height?

Brian Knox:

Our data indicates around 3 hours for the most popular servers. However, there were servers that never had a queue, as well. Our suggestion is as always go to the low pop/recommended servers.

Does NCsoft plan to issue any kind of compensation for players who pre-ordered strictly to gain access on the 20th , two days ahead of launch, only to wait in queue?

Brian Knox:

While there are no plans for compensating players, we are monitoring this closely and do take their feedback very seriously. We're working hard to make this as great a playing experience as possible with the incredible demand we've seen.

Does NCsoft currently have any plans to make sure that this scene isn't repeated on retail launch day?

Brian Knox:

We have preparations in place but there is some weathering of the storm that needs to take place. As players start to purchase the product and the initial first day excitement calms down I think you will see better queue times and a better play experience.

Problem is if you have a guild estabilshed on there then you have no choice but to log on there. They need to increase the max amount of people allowed onto the servers.

Surely everyone in the guild would be encountering the logon queue though and getting equally fed up. Wouldnt it simply be better for the guild to agree to move server and that way everyone could play?

They wont increase the max number of people that much is pretty certain. Got to be better to move a guild and at least all be able to play than have 90% of a guild sat getting frustrated in a queue.

Depends on when they can log on. I connected to my home pc at 4 to logon and it was a 4 hour queue then! If the server is so stressed they shouldnt let people create chars on it.

Well to be fair...its a lose lose situation for them. Whatever they do they cant win. If they froze character creation then guilds would just complain because only 45% of their guildmembers were able to make characters and then it locked out and the other 55% couldnt make characters.

If it was me, I'd just move my guild to a server where all my members could play. Done that before in WoW because of server queues, I wouldnt hesitate to do it again if I had to.

tbh reading the guild forums and the like, it sounds like spatalos is very full already. On release week, it will be horrifying, and there will always be the possibility of lagging as well.

It might be a good idea to move to a low pop server now, and when the game is released retail the low pop server will become medium to high population. up to you guys ofc though.

I guess but moving servers is always risky, you lose people who dont want to start again also you might end up on one with a really low pop. They could see by the amount of people who pre-selected what was going to happen but nothing has been done about it. Allowing transfers off also creates another problem of leaving the busy server almost dead.

if a move will be done ocuk should do it quick, before people level up further and are even more reluctant to start over.
