***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Just dropped £250 on this:

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition
Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 AMD 970
TeamGroup Vulcan (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz

Does anyone know what sort of overclock I should be looking at on the stock cooler, and any recommendation of a decent after market cooler to go with this?

Hmm I probably wouldn't go beyond 4.2 with a stock cooler. Tinker with the settings and aim for a high fsb running stock clock speed. Test the RAM to see how far you can push it.

When you can get a better cooler start upping the multi and tinker some more.

An 8320 will hold 4GHz no problem on the stock cooler, it might be a bit noisy though.

Lots of people have got ~4.5GHz on the Coolermaster EVO 212, that's about £25. The recommended cooler depends on how high you want to overclock. I'd say for air, £30-40 for 4.5-4.7GHz, a high end £50-60 cooler for 4.7 to 5GHz. For AIO water, an H100 or equivalent, but nothing under 4.5GHz requires AIO watercooling.

Guys got a big problem, I flashed my bios and GPU and now my computer is running extremely slow. It takes on average 25 minutes to load from pre-bios screen to windows loading finally to desktop. Also if I tap F2 at the start it takes 7 minutes to load bios then it's so slow and laggy I can't use the mouse, have to navigate with arrow keys and it takes ages to move up/down/across.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix it..?

Last time I was on the desktop, I ran GPU tests, they were fine, CPU still running fine under IBT, I checked Samsung magician and the ssd is healthy.

Well I cleared CMOS, now it won't load the usual pre-bios screen, it's a black screen saying WARNING! Bios recovery mode has been detected, please insert bios recovery disc or CAP file from CD/removable storage device and reset.

So I have put the Asus mobo disk in and reset, loaded straight back into the same screen! Just going to leave it and see if it loads from the disk.

Sounds like something is seriously up with the BIOS flash.

If you can download the BIOS onto a USB stick on another machine, try that.

have turned it off at the mains, the psu, reset it a dozen times via mobo and case, go button etc. still in same black screen.

Have downloaded the latest update 1702 iirc, got the USB in the slot, where is the USB flash button..?

Cheers proc. I've got the USB with the updates on, in the port directly below the CMOS button, have pressed it and restarted, still same screen!

Think I might have to get a new board :(

Does the USB stick have the BIOS .cap file on it and nothing else? And did you rename the file as above?

It's possible your board is just faulty of course but it sounds like the BIOS flash went very wrong.

Something else you can try is turn the power off at the mains and take the CMOS battery out (a gentle prise with a screwdriver will do it), leave it a few mins, put the battery back in and then try again.

Hope he gets it back operational, nothing worse than having to buy/rma for borked components rendering the machine out of action!

Well I deleted all files except 1701 (latest bios update) and renamed to C5FZ.CAP, it has loaded to the ROG pre-bios screen but still hasn't loaded bios (I pressed F2 a minute ago) but it's a start! :)

If it's under a month old then an instant replacement via the retailer should be possible, no messing around with manufacturers.

It sounds like the BIOS is corrupt though and it's just not finding the right file to flash for recovery.

Is it doing anything at all? Or just the message saying to put the USB stick in?
