***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Was looking at that new Asrock Killer mobo, looks pretty nice, just more temptation to go red with my 290! but sensible head says go 4770k for now and then sell it later and go AMD lol

I would wait for full spec tbh. Asrock have a filthy habit of knocking out what look to be brilliant boards, then fitting them with 4+1 power stages.

I highly, highly doubt it can hold a candle to the CHV given I can tell already it doesn't have a separate memory power stage (there's only one 8 pin) though I admit the feature list is kind of nice.

I have a Killer (pic of my rig, latest..)

And it's got the best software firewall I've ever seen in my life. Block - browse - yes - blocked.

The one on Bullguard is a frigging PITA. It's hidden under all sorts of submenus and is a right wind up to use. Keeps forgetting blocked apps.

This is slightly off topic but I find it odd there is no amd 8xxx cpu listed on the heaven benchmark thread top 50 single gpu.

Would love to see a comparison of a 8350 @4.4 with a stock 290 vs i5 2500k @4.4 with stock 290

Would love to buy amd and use the money I save not getting a 4770k elsewhere in my new pc. Problem is the uncertainty that future games will utilise all those cores. If it was guaranteed that forthcoming games like Thief, elder scrolls online, elite etc would make use of the extra cores I wouldn't even be hesitating right now

Best I can do is this.

You ask anyone that does programming and they'll all tell you the same thing, certain things just do not work over multiple threads.

So while most will move over to multiple threads they'll always be games that remain limited in thread use.

Yeah in all honesty I only play a few games really. Bit of bf4, and on occasion Rift, wow, ff14, swtor. I will play Thief, Star Citizen, Elite, Eso and camelot unchained when they are released. And looking at that list Thief and Star Citizen I believe will be mantle so the cpu wont hinder that much.

Sod it, guess im going AMD, the savings can go towards my custom loop.

You're moving from a 2500k to a FX? Why? An i5 is more then enough and surely just getting a 2600/2700k would be a cheaper option?

Just fancy a change in all honesty. I like the idea of more cores also, and the way im thinking also is with amd hardware in both xbone and ps4 I'm pretty sure sooner or later pc ports will come that will be optimised for more cores. Coupled with mantle, it seems sensible as the performance should be good. And with older games or single threaded then a highly clocked amd cpu and a 290 should provide enough power to get reasonable quality and performance

Right then, which mobo for 8350? or should i buy the 8320? which is going to hit 5ghz easier?

Also i dont like red, i prefer a black mobo if possible, but all i see is people recommending the Asus mobos for 8xxx cpus, are the other brands really that bad? Gigabyte do a nice one in black it seems, is this a no go ?

If you want 5Ghz you need to spend over £100 on a board for that...

The chips are so power hungry that you need a board with a beefy VRM system to handle the overclocks, and all those boards are expensive.

Oh i dont mind spending upto £150 or more on a mobo, just want to make sure i get a decent mobo that can hit 5ghz potentially, is the 8350 going to achieve it easier than the 8320? that Asus CHV has sweet features i just dont like red lol. i know its kinda trivial to say but i would prefer all black, as it suits the theme im working towards (black and white with a small hint of blue)

Do ram coolers actually help with OC? Saw one from a different supplier for about £15

It's more the fact that I'm using an AIO which means there isn't much air circulating over the board.

I wouldn't bother in an air cooled rig as the cooler does it for you but in a water cooled rig the air just sits stagnant. It's there more for the board to be able to get cool air rather than the ram.

I had no problems achieving 5GHz on an M5A99X Evo (black and blue), but I wanted to go watercooled and the CHV had the necessary blocks available.

That was not prime stable due to CPU temperature, but the M5A99X did not throttle due to VRM's

It probably has too much blue for you though.

I dont mind some blue as the case is a Phantek Enthoo Primo which standardly has some blue led. Black case and white fans, custom loop could go blue liquid with white fittings.

So black white and blue would work nicely

when you had it at 5ghz would it crash when gaming and etc? what cpu cooler did you have?

I have that board and can only get proper stable at 4.6 / 4.8 wouldnt stable with most cpu stressing software and every one in a while crash and ive been able to boot at 5ghz but would crash a lot. i would love to see a guide for this spefic board

what temp monitoring software do you guys use now? (trying to OC my mates 8320/sabertooth) and keep getting 11c on coretemp?!?
I've googled but nobody gives a proper answer
