***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

when you had it at 5ghz would it crash when gaming and etc? what cpu cooler did you have?

I have that board and can only get proper stable at 4.6 / 4.8 wouldnt stable with most cpu stressing software and every one in a while crash and ive been able to boot at 5ghz but would crash a lot. i would love to see a guide for this spefic board

I did not have any crashes or blue screens whilst gaming at 5GHz although I was only using demo's, games like Dirt 2, Rise of flight and also gaming benchmarks like ARMA II.

I have a stock HD6950 Frozr II so not an ultimate gaming rig, it was pushing 99% GPU most of the time.

I used a lot of benchmarks, PCmark 3Dmark AIDA64 all without issues although Prime and IBT gave too much heat and I could not get stability

I had a Phanteks 140mm cooler.

I was IBT stable at 4.8 using 16x 302MHz over 10 runs on very [email protected]

Was just checking the more expensive motherboards and i notice that the Asrock ext9 has the following:

''Advanced 12 + 2 Power Phase
- This motherboard is designed with a 12 + 2 Power Phase design. It features sturdy components and completely smooth power delivery to the CPU. Plus, it offers unmatched overclocking capability and enhanced performance with the lowest temperature for advanced gamers as well.''

Does this make this board a better CPU overclocker than compared to the Crosshair v formula z or the sabertooth?

Nope!

Give me 8 phases on Asus over any amount on Asrock any day!

Just because it has more VRMs it doesnt make it better. The parts on the CHVF-Z are of better quality when comparing to most other AM3+ motherboards. To be honest, i would even prefer an Asus evo 990 over the extreme 9 or Fatal1ty.

Asrock and MSI MOBO's dont sport the best track records when it comes to am3+ power management but they can make great firework shows!

I must have a really cruddy 8320, can't get it IBT stable above 4.6 with anything, been up to 1.52v but could break 4.7!

you will see back at the start of this thread its hard to get cpu stable on prime and ibt over 4.6 due to the massive load they put on cpu

if it games or whatever you use it for without crashing its as stable as your gonna need dude

mine is @ 4.9ghz and not prime or ibt stable but games all day long aida 64 is good as it puts more realistic loads on cpu as gaming would

so to cap it off i wouldn't worry a whole lot m8 as long as it doesn't hard lock blue screen ect :p

finally off for crimbo been a mad year so haven't been here much and time i have had off has been gaming thread has come along way guys and all your rigs look great

question off topic of cpu but thought i would throw it at community

my 7970 all of a sudden wont run any game without locking up and i get error message saying "display driver has stopped working and recovered"

i have underclocked it back to factory settings deleted all amd related items re installed, reverted back to old drivers but nothing works grrr

can anyone shed any light on it

Hi farmerboy. Sorry to hear about your 7970. Is it under warranty? I would imagine so as most had 2-3 years warranty. Does this happen when at stock clocks?

Did you do a full clean driver reinstall? If that doesn't work, I would try a fresh partition/install of windows before you write the card off.

i brought it second hand for £170 guy needed quick sale i tend not to buy second hand for this reason no warranty but at that price it was a steal

yes at stock clocks too even put cpu back to stock with no help at all

runs heaven and 3d mark ok no crashes just when on games on steam oddly as bench mark hits it harder than gaming

also heaven seemed really low just hit 900 score not great for a 7970 dont know if its related

I'd bet a clean windows install will sort this. Steam is problematic for no apparent reason at times.

Your card technically could be under warranty even if second hand. Check the serial number on the manufacturer's site to see.
