***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

I'd bet a clean windows install will sort this. Steam is problematic for no apparent reason at times.

Your card technically could be under warranty even if second hand. Check the serial number on the manufacturer's site to see.

bit the bullet and gone for another reinstall on new ssd drive i was gonna use in new build not 100% sure my ssd wasn't faulty so trying on new one

my previous one has played up in past trying to eliminate all possible causes

I just got the FX-8320 with the Asus M5a99FX board. I quickly got it to 4.4GHz with just multiplierand it seemed stable without adjusting voltage manually. Just LLC on extreme. I was using coretemp and i was getting 56 C.

But then I installed Asus suite and HW Monitor and their temperatures are identical to each other but are almost 20C more than coretemp. so i get a warning that it has reached 76C when running a cpu stress test (Asus diagnostic stress test).
It didn't crash, I just stopped it when i saw those temperatures.

A bit of fan manipulation has got it down to 70C but still a bit high.

So who to believe?

Would go with hw monitor. What is your voltage and cooler?

Temps seem a bit high but it has been a while since i have touched air cooling on a fx chip. Definitely see if you can get temps lower. Take the side panel off and if temps drop, then you will benefit from better (and more) air flow.

Ignore the above. You want HWMON, keep and eye on the CPU and package temps.

If you want to test your CPU then run LinX, five passes. Don't bother with anything else as it's a waste of time. Then once you've passed that run Cinebench and if you get through that try your games.

BTW. Be careful with running LLC on extreme. With my board (CHVFZ) it was sneakily shoving my CPU with 1.5v even though I only had it set to 1.43. Open up CPUZ and look at your volts if you're running high levels of LLC as you may find you're giving it way more voltage than you need to.

Okay, ive finally finished putting my rig together. Whats the best software to check temps? Using core temp and hwmonitor which give me different temps and speedfan just freezes my computer seems like its a windows 8 problem. Also whats the best cpu stress test for fx8350? Intelburn test? Prime95? Any other software plz do mention

Furthermore i run a test with prime one a setting i was trying out and it failed 1 core after 10mins however with AIDA64 it didnt at all and it was about 10C cooler, which one is more reliable? This test also failed with Intelburntest

Jesus ****** christ, how many times do I need to say it?

LinX is rubbish for AMD processors, it's optimised for Intel so the load temp is much lower.

Prime is much better AMD FX just can't handle it when overclocked beyond the stock speed (4ghz on all cores for 8350). FX9370/9590 were never intended to be completely stable as they can't be at those speeds without overheating.

What about AIDA 64 ? Ive read way too many times prime95, intelburntest and etc are not for AMD FXs... and as far as LinkX ive never heard of it and dont know how to use it compared to others, doesnt seem to even put my cpu at 100%

Here is my current overclock:

On stock voltages i did 4.5ghz, i felt the temps were best at 4.9ghz, i also test it with AIDA64 which seemed stable for a while, but not with the other cpu stress programs.

at 5ghz at full loads temps went from 55 to 65 on full load, at 4.9 was a bit better. and 4.8 a huge difference but then again i can get 4.8ghz stable at 1.42V and temps never went past 55C

Nice one! Didnt think a h100 could get 5ghz! Might try and reset the heatsink with some ic diamond compound. try it out again. i'm at 4.6 i think, any higher and the temps keep climbing to max temps.

It can, but it wuld fail with a prime95 test but hasnt failed with an aida64 test or amd cata stable test. Ive played games and etc yet to have any crash at 5.0ghz

Only the kicker is that it works brilliantly, and, is over in less than ten minutes.

If my 8320 makes it through LinX and Cinebench it's stable, which is what matters.
