***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Yeah I'll push it a bit further tomorrow.

Should I be setting memory frequency to the speed of my RAM or as close to as possible? Will setting this to auto be unstable? Think I've currently got it set a little lower than my RAMs frequency as there wasnt an exact match.

Yes set it as close to stock as possible initially until you cpu oc is stable. Then overclock the memory and tighten timings. On my board, the system goes nuts if I use anything except auto volts for memory. Depending on the type of ram you have, voltage may be 1.5-1.65V+.

I use an vcore offset of +0.1V to 0.125V for my overclocks. Generally +0.1V is adequate which takes the CPU volts to 1.45V approx. The CPU down volts to about 1.0V on cool and quiet.

1.65V on memory and I am running 2000MHz on a combination of vengeance 2000MHz and patriot 2133MHz. My busclock is 250MHz.

there is wrong version of LINX, GFLOPS with right one must be around 70-90 GFLOPS after OC...

There is my favourite baby...9590 FX. Max stable at 5090 MHz, 5000 Mhz with decent voltage 1.49V. Cooling AMD allinone liquid (so no custom watter).

Flank3r have you got a Sabertooth r2? If so can you list your settings so I can take a butchers?

Think Im at the limits of my cooling now.

Managed to hit just under 5GHz (4996.8MHz) FSB 249 mulitplyer still at 20 and 1.475V but I'm hitting 69C under prime. If I hadn't just got the Corsair H90 I'd be buying the 110 just now, maybe time to save for a proper water cooling setup.

I'll save this oc for further tweaking and go back to my 4.7Ghz clock on stock volts for everyday use.

Can't wait to see how far you can clock the westmere. Wonder if you can get it to 4 GHz with some FSB OCs as well.

I'm going to be heavily limited by the 13 multi on it. I'm pretty sure the Alienware board will do a 200 bclk, so my aim is 2.6ghz on all 6 cores.

Anything more than that would be a bonus tbh. All I would have got for the money is a 45nm I7 920 or something and when overclocked they're just as bad as the FX 8s for guzzling power. A friend of mine recently tried to turn his I7 920 rig into a media center. It was using 100w at idle, even down clocked and down volted. The massive plus with this Intel chip I've ordered is the 60w TDP lol.

Edit. If I get it all running OK though then expect a showdown :) I'll bench it in games that support large thread loads. It will be very interesting to see if the IPC can make up for the huge clocks the AMDs run.

To be fair mate you have. It is a shame as theres a few more like yourself or who have jumped ship who are not positively spreading the news though.

I am interested to hear from our new friend to this thread and see if he finds the same..

I'll be getting an FX-8320 in a few days for a second (HTPC/LAN games) PC (which will watercooled, with 16GB of RAM and a 6950). I have an i7 3930K in my main PC. I am very much interested in seeing what sort of noticeable differences there will be.

I'm also a big fan of Tek Syndicate too, they're by far the best Youtube technology channel going.

Pretty much what I'm doing although the FX 8320 system is paired with a GTX 780 classi. Not a single regret getting the FX CPU. Really good performance and a great all-rounder.

If you could take a look and report back after a week of fair testing it would be nice to get another viewpoint from a forum users experience. Not that I need convincing as I am very happy with what I have, but the more that state real world experience the better.

Thanks Spoffle.

Well as you own both an i7 and an FX, you can contribute to the realistic opinions on here. Most of the guys in your position can hardly see much difference when using the machines yet there are a few on here that would rubbish that even though they do not own an FX.

The performance comparison is more aimed at i5 users but it's nice to get a sensible viewpoint from people who own both brands. If you get time it would be nice to compare your i7 with a single 290 to your FX rig and show results. Feedback of playing the same games would be fantastic!

Sorry Th0nt I missed this :)

I'll see about sorting a few runs out next time im back at work.

If im honest there isn't much difference at all in the two, there are a couple of games that favour one over the other mind, BF4 seems to run better on the AMD, and Arma 2+3 run miles better on the Intel (down to single core pseed I imagine).
I run both systems on cheap (yet pretty good) catleap 27" 1440p monitors.
The work one runs at 60hz, and my home one is oc'd to 120hz.
