***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Burnt, did you save a profile with the FSB and reset to defaults and up your multi to see what the cpu can take?

Guys, sorry off topic a wee bit but should I buy:

Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 Motherboard + FX6300 OR

MSI 990FXA-GD65 AM3 AMD990FX DDR3 ATX + FX8320

Its one or the other and they are within £10 of each other. :D

MSI has a bad failure rate with AMD boards. 8+2 isn't the end of the story. It's simple really - just get Asus to be safe. The cheapest good one for overclocking and Crossfire/SLI is the Asus 990FX Pro, but the Sabertooth can be found for ~£130.

My last board was MSI and was pretty quality with a great forum to back up user support.

The Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 is on this week only and is only £7 more.

MSI Intel != MSI AMD :)

The problem is that if you're on Crossfire you really do need 990FX to get the full bandwidth.

Dude you wanna see the horror stories on the net. Apparently MSI released a board with no thermal protection temps and they would catch on fire.

That was more than enough to push me to Asus, where I will stay now.

Thanks, not what I wanted to hear. :p :D

Whats the problem with the Msi, I've checked and it has 8+2 phase so should be good for overclocking, always liked Msi boards. :)

MSI on AMD is nothing like MSI on Intel. When it comes to 990FX and AM3+ boards the only company who really give a crap is Asus. They have worked hard to provide the best boards on AMD and it shows.

Asrock just pump out boards without the vrms to handle the processors properly and the good one they do make is nearly £200 (extreme 9).

Hi guys, just posted some initial BF4 results with the 8320 at different clocks on the BF4 CPU scaling thread. Thont I know you were interested in this. Not sure what to make of the bottlenecking issue but I am not really seeing any. Seeing very good core utilisation though.

ARGH. My game arrived. The PC is still packed..

I ordered the fibre broadband, won't be set up for at least two friggin weeks :(

HARUMPH.

Hey guys,

I've pre-ordered a Asus hd 7990 but starting to have doubts, should I stick with this or jump ship to a gtx 780. Pros and cons?

I realise this is completely off-topic but as I'm currently waiting on a gpu before commencing my first build, using an fx 8320, I didn't think you'd mind.. :D

7990 faster, mantle.

780 slower, no mantle. Better support for old games? (actually no, mate of mine just sold one because it was screwy in older games).

I had the same choice as you and I ordered a 7990. I had ample opportunity to send it back but the 780 barely scrapes Crysis 3 on max with 8xmsaa. I wanted something with more balls.

Sure, you'll run into driver issues from time to time but you'd be bloody gutted if Mantle came out and FPS soar.

Are you manually setting your NB and HT link frequencies? If so, what are you setting at?

I had them at default and scaling with the fsb. I have my profile saved but I'm going to see what results I get tweaking the cpu mult. Crank up the mult and throw in some vcore

Burnt, it really should be much easier to reach 5ghz. Honestly it should take a few minutes and that's it.

I know, but I always work slowly from the bottom up. I burnt my 955be by being too aggressive - I could get away with it then but now the missus is around she'd probably fry me with volts if I did the same now :-)

Thanks for the quick response Andy. I know I got a good deal for £399.95 + 3 games, but have read so many people slating the dual/crossfire set up, started to sow the seeds of doubt. Although it's been that long since I gamed on PC, I probably wouldn't notice any drops from frames or stutter lol silent hunter 3 was the last game I played!

Don't know much about mantle tbh just want a card that I can rely on to game well which will last a couple of years. Cooling is the only thing I'm worried about, but have ordered an extra 6 fans (scythe and noctua) plus the 3 120mm and 1 200mm that come with the case.

Maths, I have both a 7990 and 2 x 780s (a gigabyte ref card and an MSI gaming OC edition 780). The 7990 is around 25-30% faster in raw GPU power compared to my best clocking 780. This is with both 7990 and 780 overclocked.

780 is a great GPU which runs cool, quiet and quite effortless. If you are playing at 1080p, even 1 card will be enough for almost anything on max settings. At 1440p+, you would need 2 780s to max some games.

Comparing 780 SLI to 7990, my 780 SLI setup is around 30-35% faster in raw GPU power than the 7990.

Bang for buck, the 7990 is MILES better.

Crossfire for 1080p is well and truly fixed mate. I would not have ordered one other wise ! It's only on Eyefinity and 1600p etc that it's still problematic.

It was pretty much broken from day one until this summer when PCPER exposed AMD. It didn't take them long to actually do something about it (around 4 months all told) but yes, since August they've been sorting it out.

I've always used more than one GPU and the problems are low, if you stick to just two GPUs. Any more and you're just asking for it.

For that price seriously the 7990 is a steal. Think of it this way, loads of people here snapped em up when they were dropped to £499.99 on an OcUK promotion not long back.

If I had that sort of money it would have been bought. My typical GPU spend though is £150-200 normally however the current era of gaming the mid range seems to have crept up to around £300.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. Good to know that AMD have pulled their finger out with updated drivers etc and having Mantle in the pipeline sounds promising, even though I don't know what it is exactly...takes the load straight from the GPU rather than through the CPU?

I'll be using 1080p as well, my 40 inch LED 100htz has become redundant recently so want to use that instead of the 27 inch Asus I just bought.
