Interesting Panos. I've never used overdrive to overclock the CPU. Does it change any other settings itself in the BIOS such as the LLC, memory timings, NB, HT link frequency, NB voltage, CPU/NB voltage etc?
Me neither, and hadn't installed it on my old system (
[email protected] & GTX570) because never installed catalysts.
Unfortunately it doesn't fiddle with timings. It only pushes through brute force (multiplier). I will give it a try to see if it will get any better by putting the bus at normal OC speed, and leave the CPU multiplier at auto.
I did a quick change and put the power at 1.478v leaving everything else to default.
The overdrive while was "seeing" the CPU was at stock volt 1.3875v it went and tested the 5000 test failing it on the 90%. Maybe because the multiplier was too high, in comparison that my normal OC having higher bus and less multi.
Either way, it was easy to be "fooled" because the extra power did raise it more.
Here is the screenshot after raising the voltage only, running prime95 64bit.
The only issue was that this time the H100 didn't kicked in quickly as normal doing when the CPU passes the 50C, but when hit 70C.
(and kicked the normal 70db noise with 4 fans)
Btw if anyone is planning to use H80/100 get some Enermax Magma to replace the jet engines Corsair is using. (did that today)
Because having them at full speed while running prime, reminded me the old FOP38 and it's delta fan. And it's noise was enough to make me go to peltier with my first watercooling system.
