***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Thanks for the reassurance guys. Good to know that AMD have pulled their finger out with updated drivers etc and having Mantle in the pipeline sounds promising, even though I don't know what it is exactly...takes the load straight from the GPU rather than through the CPU?

I'll be using 1080p as well, my 40 inch LED 100htz has become redundant recently so want to use that instead of the 27 inch Asus I just bought.

In short it's like DX11, only it doesn't suck and guzzle resources. Which should take the dependence off of the CPU and allow the GPU to do the work.

I think that's pretty much how it goes.

I got lucky with the sale as it went up £100.04 after a few days of the drop. Just getting inpatient and I probably won't receive it until the 11th and I have everything else here waiting to be built. Can I build it and overclock the 8320 without a gpu?

hahaha I'm in the same boat !

I'm currently moving house so I packed up all my PC gear over a week back and took it all to my mother's for safe keeping (I don't want the removal men throwing it around). I bought a 7990 and it arrived, I got about ten minutes to look at it before I packed it and it's been sitting there due to delays ever since !

I move in on Sunday, but won't have the internet installed for over two weeks and I need it to activate BF4.

I feel your pain !

Just moved myself, in with the GF and she has BT infinity 1, but I said we would upgrade to infinity 2 (18mb Upload, 72mb Download) as it's only £3 per month extra. Got a Asus Router and Asus wireless card for PC to maximise the signal, as my setup will be in another room to the phone line. Not that it's much use with my Rig still in the boxes!

Can't wait to start and log my build.

hi guys been gaming away so aint been on here much and work is mega busy

i see couple of posts back about cpu parking after disabling mine it gained me 10 extra points in cinebench

didn't even know about this but i will take free performance gain, not much granted but to quote a well known super market "every litle helps" lol

thread is coming on now great work here guys

my 4.9ghz needs more work wasn't stable after playing batman origins for few hours, so back to 4.8ghz for now

i think my psu not helping as its bronze and not most efficient so ordered a new corsair 860 platinum psu.

and new memory

great going guys need to kick these gaming nights off soon :D

Well done farmerboy. Yes core unpack seems to help.

Congrats on new PSU ad memory. Changing to an 860w plat certainly helped me.

Yeah seems to help m8

Yeah psu I think is the reason for unstable clocks its only bronze and not very efficient may be able to reduce voltage with the new psu memory should give a nice little increase too, my viper ram just wont clock it wont boot at all if I alter anything even with ram voltage at 1.65v and loose timmings grrr

Guys,

A good tip to have an indication how far your 83x0 can go with stock voltage (1.3875v), or want a quick overclock not spending 4-5 hours tinkering with the BIOS settings, is to use the latest catalyst (13.11 beta 8) and see how much OC you can get with the Overdrive. (CPU Overdrive)
(just let it run and leave the pc)

Windows 8 support came with the 13.11. (Saw the option with 13.10 however returned a OS support error)

After a lot of "tinkering" for educational purposes (my OC is on BIOS as), I saw that the 13.11b8 can pull the FX8350 @ 4.8Ghz without applying extra voltage. While on 13.11b1 that was 4.4Ghz and 13.11b6 was 4.5Ghz.
I even run Prime 95 and worked fine @4.8

And that made me bit sad tbh. 20 years fiddling with the BIOS to overclock, and now you can have a software tool and just pull the bar to the right

FYI This is under Windows 8.1

Going keep you updated, when I apply 1.48v currently use for the OC at 5.1Ghz. And see if the overdrive can be "fooled" and push the cpu any higher.

Interesting Panos. I've never used overdrive to overclock the CPU. Does it change any other settings itself in the BIOS such as the LLC, memory timings, NB, HT link frequency, NB voltage, CPU/NB voltage etc?

Meh all this talk of new power supplies makes me want to use my XFX.

I might do a switch, especially as I'm going to be without the internet for nearly three weeks.

Yeah I probably will. The XFX is a better unit tbh. Will save me about £2 a year in leccy too lol.

I'm going to need stuff to do for two weeks. Got some painting to do on the flat to make it presentable (for now).

Once you use a high end PSU you're stuck with them for ever.

It can improve stability, but any dramatic changes are likely because of too much draw on the poorer one, particularly on 12V.

Me neither, and hadn't installed it on my old system ([email protected] & GTX570) because never installed catalysts.

Unfortunately it doesn't fiddle with timings. It only pushes through brute force (multiplier). I will give it a try to see if it will get any better by putting the bus at normal OC speed, and leave the CPU multiplier at auto.

I did a quick change and put the power at 1.478v leaving everything else to default.

The overdrive while was "seeing" the CPU was at stock volt 1.3875v it went and tested the 5000 test failing it on the 90%. Maybe because the multiplier was too high, in comparison that my normal OC having higher bus and less multi.

Either way, it was easy to be "fooled" because the extra power did raise it more.
Here is the screenshot after raising the voltage only, running prime95 64bit.
The only issue was that this time the H100 didn't kicked in quickly as normal doing when the CPU passes the 50C, but when hit 70C.
(and kicked the normal 70db noise with 4 fans)

Btw if anyone is planning to use H80/100 get some Enermax Magma to replace the jet engines Corsair is using. (did that today)

Because having them at full speed while running prime, reminded me the old FOP38 and it's delta fan. And it's noise was enough to make me go to peltier with my first watercooling system.
