***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Did he heck lol.

I must say with my run of luck with computers over the past couple of years I am paranoid about switching out the PSU, especially given everything works. I'll see I guess.

Still packing up with a leave day of tomorrow. I will be gone for a bit as fibre takes nearly three weeks for them to install it :S

Good luck with it Andy. 3 weeks is a heck of a long time without internet.

Thanks Panos. Is Catalyst similar to the overdrive utility used in this guide?

http://sites.amd.com/us/Documents/AMD_FX_Performance_Tuning_Guide.pdf

The latter seems to allow a huge number of parameters including CPU clocks, voltages, NB, HT and memory, to be modified through windows. I am always anxious performing overclocks through windows but the guide actually recommends it.

Had forgotten about it. :o

Tried to use it when upgraded the system to the FX and windows 8.1, but wasn't working with the 13.10 beta so left it.

It does have a lot of options to change including voltage (to what AMD seems safe levels also), and given that whole day is running without issue using the overdrive overclock, I will give it some tinkering and post results. :)

The funny bit is we can import Smart Profiles :D

We must blame AMD for bursting the bubble of overclocking, and giving it to the masses. The art of "mystics" and geeks, is no more. :(
Now everyone can overclock by pulling the bars to the top and let AMD software decide if it is wise to do so.

I have the ocean.... But yeah, it's gonna suck alright. I'll have to go to mum's a bit as she's only a few miles away and use hers.

That's 3 weeks waiting for BT to make a hash out of your connection... then you'll have 3 months dealing with an Indian call centre before you can game! :P

The network is maintained by BT Openworld anyway :-( which means it will be a BT "engineer" who comes to (dis)connect you... you might get lucky and have it work first time though!

Yep it all runs off the BT backbone, Plusnet are one of many agents that use their lines. Why on earth it costs £80 is beyond me if the line is terminated at the house box and still functions.

I've no idea what functions tbh. It could have been ages since some one used the phone there. I do know there's an ISDN or whatever box on the wall lmao. That's going back a bit !

Hey guys shame to hear about the bt horror stories I found them ace moved into new place ordered infinity 2 on the monday installed on friday top service :)

Anyone using gigabyte 7970 oc voltage locked one? Wondering what clocks you have managed to get?

I am, but I am running at stock as the consensus on other forums is that it barely has any headroom - artifacts at 1025-1050mhz. There's a post on toms showing how to fix it by removing a resistor on the PCB and soldering over the connection. Not for me - I'll choose a different manufacturer next time!

FB, 7970 crashed after 30 sec of valley @ 1075mhz core. It made it through a bench run @ 1050mhz fine - obviously that doesn't mean it's stable at that speed.

Not much headroom at all then I think.

evening guys, reason iasked was i have never bothered to clock 7970 never needed to but as im happy with cpu clock where it is thought i would have a go.
i know they wont go far as there voltage locked but i had a mess around and i can game for hours @ these settings below

best i could achieve any higher and it dies lol

may check that thread for soldering, as i intend to change gpu with my crimbo bonus anyway so nothing to loose  i guess this soldering is what enables you to unlock voltage then?

Yes, the resistor physically restricts the voltage. I'm not sure how many people have done it successfully... I was trying to sell mine and get a mat plat instead, but now I'm thinking a gtx780 or 290 if the prices are good. The gf can use the 7970 for simcity :-)
