***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

I'm beginning to think I am not using the same overdrive utility as everyone else. I used the one in Catalyst Control Centre and it didn't give me any option to set anything as active. It also rebooted itself after reaching the limits of auto-tune (both at stock volts and at 1.45). All I did when getting back in windows was set CPU power to 100% and put the slider to 4.9 GHz.

It didn't even try to test 5GHz at 1.45. Maybe if I put the voltage up it will. I am using the latest Catalyst beta drivers, is that the right version?

I used the one in CCC, ticked overrride cpu settings and ran 'auto tune'. It only hit 4.7Ghz before asking me to reboot.

I then changed voltages in BIOS manually and redid the test which is where it got to 5.2Ghz before I bottled out. I have noticed though that setting the slider to max sometimes doesnt confirm in CPU-Z.

Let the fun and games begin !

Thankfully the bios on this board is identical to the ROG. There's a few settings missing but the layout is the same..

I gave it 1.44v and it's pushing 1.41. Not stability tested it yet as BTFON has taken a nosedive. It's going to be whatever I can muster on 1.4v basically.

It is recognising the chip as Zambezi. Maybe it needs a bios update?

My max temperature seems to be in the late forties on my H100, case around 26 so I don't think heat is the chief problem.

Late 40s on normal usage yes? Not prime95 benching?

Because when it benches, it hits 70C and the 2 corsair fans are working at 100% to drop the temp below 70C (hovering between 65-68 at 100% fan speed).

Hence I am upgrading the fans before try higher.

I was tempted to go for 4 Cougar Dual-X CFD, however they are four times the price over the Magma ones for 25% more air pressure (1.4mm H2O of the Magma over 1.74mm H2O the Cougar) while having less airflow (69.15 CFM Magma, 64.37 the Cougar).

Also the reason that I need more power probably is down to the crap motherboard. :(

It'll give an improvement, but the game is very demanding on the GPU. A single 7970 can only just manage 60fps at 1080p on ultra.

It auto sets to high, but seems to struggle a little. I'm just looking to play it on high if poss with 60 fps.

Depends.

First of all because of the motherboard, which one you have?
Have you overclocked the 965?

An FX8350 alone isn't going to help much on it's own, even if is pretty good on BF4 compared with anything smaller than an Intel 4770 and clocks like hell.

However, you cannot go wrong with it, and either try to grab a second hand 6970 if you find one for less than £90 or upgrade later on to a 79x0 or 280X.

(I say less than £90, because it ain't worth more when you are getting to 270X price bracket)

I've got a Sabertooth 990fx (Rev1) with the latest BIOS update. The 965 is clocked to 3.8. I have considered another 6970 as my PSU would cope, but I thought the 965 would bottleneck it all a little. I do like to look of the 270x though. My thought was to possibly get rid of both the CPU and GPU and get an 8320/8350 and a 270x as the whole upgrade would cost around £150 if I get a relatively ok price for my parts. I am kind of on a budget as have a lot of other stuff going on at the moment.

Yes it would. I would imagine Bf4 on 1080p medium/ few highs, no AA AF etc would pull a decent framerate with your GPU.

I was surprised by how well Bf4 runs. When it does run that is.

I agree it runs ok, but I am having lot's of crashes. Just had a red screen of death so am trying the beta drivers now.

When benching overclocked it would max out into the 50's. This was around the 4.5-4.8Ghz range using the provided corsair fans.

I did bench for a while using prime95 at stock after BF4 caused lots of crashes and another forum poster was subjectively suggesting it was down to the cpu (I know guffaw). So I obliged and with all cores maxed out for some 105 mins I think it was it only reached 31c.

Cinebench, and AIDA for an hour (just checked) only pushed it to 52c so I would like to think it is running sensibly this was at just under 4.8Ghz.

I am baffled! When I hit prime95 at 4.8+ it goes sky high to 70C before it drops to high 60C. (65-68C)
And when stops it pluments to below 25C as usual. (Idling at 4-5C)

So I would like your help to see what I do wrong and have that high temps for 0.03v more at 100%.

What fans are you using on the H100? Have you flashed the H100 to better firmware?
I do have the top perfomance setting (3 lights) on the heatsink set and running it open box while my ambient temp isn't more than 19C.
Could be my two "push" fans that seems are pretty crap and cripling the whole perfomance of the two Corsairs in pull config?
Paste? Becuase I used some artic silver 3 that I had from 2 1/2y ago when I did my last upgrade.

Thanks for your feedback

What motherboard do you have and what are you viewing the temps in?

I used to have the two lights on but as I was benching pushed it to three for a while now. It is loud but when you max out the GPU's they are probably louder.

The case I have is pretty roomy and superb for airflow: Corsair Carbide 540.

There is no 3rd party paste for the heatsink as it comes with the pre-applied tab.

The motherboard is GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev 1 :o which I have since early 2011.

Also used the Artic Silver because that what I use since forever (mid-late 90s) without issues.

My case is Lian Li alum full tower (7y old), that is "the wrong" way around and everything is upside down, keeping it with open sides.

Funny bit, my 7950s at 100% fan are so much more quiet than the Corsair ones on normal operation.

SNAP, not sure about age of my case, it is the v1000 plus, and I keep my sides on. Pictured with Phanteks but going watercooled (hopefully finally this weekend after much delay). Also the board in the picture is not my current Crosshair, but the M599X Evo I think.

Having tried to find mine on the internet, is the Lian Li PC-V2010 but the wall on the left side not the right. Exactly the same otherwise both inside & out.

Looking forward to the update with pictures and some post results! :)

I have moved the drives up into the 5.25" bays and pushed the PSU 60mm out of the back to free up space in a fairly small old case. I have just recieved the reservoir which completes the loop. Hopefully on Saturday the family will leave me alone for the day to do the build and some testing.

Need help with my build guys!

Just put my rig together (ish) turned it on and the mobo has lite up (asus crosshair V form-Z), all 4 fans that are running off the sentry fan controller are working, the fans on the H100i are working and the socket head is lite up "corsair", the graphics card fans are spinning.

The case intake fans are not working, the optical drive isn't working, and my monitor that is plugged into the back of the GPU isn't showing any signal, I've used the hdmi adaptor which is going into the monitor. Also when I wiggle the hdmi lead the fans cut out and back on again.

Help...!
