***Official AMD Mantle Thread***

Aww, you missed out all my winks ;) ;) ;)
So even the most basic of humans would know i was being sarcastic :o

Tommy, does this magic beta button mean it's not propriety then? Or is that a get out of jail card for all those that think AMD are the shining light and only do open source?

Beta is beta, it doesn't incorporate a kill switch if an Nvidia gpu is present if that's of any importance in relation to vendor lock ins.

I and many many tech sites agree that Mantle is proprietary. Not that it bothers me at all and AMD used it as a selling point for its GPUs and CPUs. What is funny is those who don't think it is proprietary. I know AMD are the good guys but come on lol

Beta isnt a get out of jail card or everyone could simply call anything beta and nothing would be proprietary
I'd also suggest after a year or so of release and listed as a feature in a few different games beta is even being stretched.
I like to think of mantle as a success for what its done not as a api that didnt even make it past Beta status because other stuff came along and overtook it

Try telling Tommy that :o He's using beta status as his ace up his sleeves.
Mantle is propriety, no different to G-Sync, 3DVision etc.

His link doesnt seem to seem to mention anywhere beta software cant be proprietary aswell.
Nvidia and AMD both at time have beta drivers can we assume these actually work for other venders and are not infact proprietary software?

The sole basis of the push on 'proprietary' by some in the case of Mantle is to tar with the same brush, AMD have a mountain to climb to get to the same bucket that Nvidia use./

Indeed Nvidia has far more proprietary stuff i dont like, but that still doesn't change the fact that mantle is still atm proprietary. Its not really a difference/level of proprietary either a piece of software is or isnt.
Overall products/vendors can have more or less pieces of such software but i was solely talking about mantle as it was the mantle thread :)

Can you explain what you mean Tommy, sounds like you're saying:

'It doesn't matter if Mantle is propriety, Nvidia have more propriety tech so it's not that bad'

I probably read it wrongly though, curses.

I think the problem is Tommy doesn't understand what proprietary actually means. Beta or they do it more are not part of the meaning of proprietary.

the goal post shifting going on around here is extraordinary

for the past year plus several of us have been trying to explain that mantle itself doesn't make any sense, that it was never going to be open and that other IHV's weren't going to support it

we specifically said that it would need to be taken over in entirety by someone like khronos and were criticised, saying that AMD were going to make *MANTLE* open, so khronos weren't needed

fast forward, khronos have used bits of mantle to create something new, but it isn't mantle, mantle games won't work on vulkan and vice versa, so as predicted mantle itself is basically going to die off and won't be open, but now this is apparently what AMD and their supporters meant all along... yeah right

I love the misuse of "Open" and "proprietary" it's great.

And again, I'd be surprised if Vulcan even went anywhere. Vulcan existing puts more weight into Linux gaming though. Although you'd hope Valve would be getting in one that with them for their currently lackluster SteamOS (Which has gone nowhere really)
