***Official AMD Mantle Thread***

the goal post shifting going on around here is extraordinary

for the past year plus several of us have been trying to explain that mantle itself doesn't make any sense, that it was never going to be open and that other IHV's weren't going to support it

we specifically said that it would need to be taken over in entirety by someone like khronos and were criticised, saying that AMD were going to make *MANTLE* open, so khronos weren't needed

fast forward, khronos have used bits of mantle to create something new, but it isn't mantle, mantle games won't work on vulkan and vice versa, so as predicted mantle itself is basically going to die off and won't be open, but now this is apparently what AMD and their supporters meant all along... yeah right

AMD's plan for Mantle wasn't to give it to someone else. But as time moved on and Khronos announced the start of development of glnext, they probably figured out that giving it to Khronos and let it be build but the entire industry (Intel, Nvidia, game devs etc.) rather than just being AMD only (Intel might have adopted Mantle, but Nvidia, extremely unlikely) is the better solution.

They are even telling game devs that aren't part of the Mantle program to go and work on DX12 and Vulkan. Mantle being the foundation of Vulkan also means a head start for all the devs that are currently working with Mantle.

Sure, Vulkan will come after DirectX 12, but considering they aren't starting from scratch, it's going to come shortly after it.

I know, i have no issue with any of that. Some of us predicted this would happen but were shouted down by the most vehement AMD supporters who were saying mantle would be open for nvidia and intel to support, which is now 100% confirmed as not being the case.

Vulkan is based upon mantle, but it isnt mantle it is being fundamentally rebuilt with mantle just being a headstart on some of the core aspects.

Mantle or Mantle under another name what's the difference?

Nividia nor Intel would never have used it under AMD's control or even under the Mantle name, thats not a criticism its an acknowledgement of an existing argument.

So why not have it controlled and developed by an independent party.

AMD gave it away, relinquished their control of it so it can spead its wings and fly.

And yet some how AMD are still wrong in that????

I thought DX12 was Mantle under another name?
Does this mean that Vulkan and DX12 are the same?

I thought AMD were going to keep control of it? I thought this was touted as one of the key advantages over DX12 wasn't it? That AMD could change it much quicker than Microsoft to make use of new hardware advancements.
Also the fact that it was AMD only meant it could be closer to the metal and make it more efficient. Wasn't this touted as an advantage over DX12? How will this work if it now supports Intel and Nvidia?

In fact, did Mantle support Intel and Nvidia? If not then Vulkan already has some glaring differences to Mantle that makes me think this isn't as simple as a rename.

I think they were right to hand it over to a 3rd party, I do wonder why they waited 14 months to do this though?

It was actually handed to the khronos Group mid last year, quite early on in its life.. its not until now that its been confirmed.

I think it is great that AMD gave the Khronos group Mantle. It is a nice kick start for them to get a decent, fast API for cross vendor support. How far that goes will tell in time and what GPUs support it. I wonder how far back they can go...6XXX/5XX perhaps? Maybe just Maxwell and GCN? My only concern for this API is the target audience... Could they drag ardent stalwarts from Windows? I hope so in truth.

I have no love for MS, and I wouldn't call myself an ardent Stalwart of Windows, but even if every game from today that launched, launched with Vulcan as the API (Thus playable on Linux) I still wouldn't move from Windows, I'd lose my current library basically.

I have pretty good internet (80mb down) and would happily give it a dual boot for a while to see how it works but I am old and change is hard for us old people...:p

You're confused by what I've said. I am not criticising AMD, I am criticising people like you who rubbished me and others who said that mantle would not last as a going concern, that new versions of DX and opengl would overtake it.
