On a purely cooling front, does this outperform the 300/900 (with only supplied fans)?

I'm looking to join the P182 club and the spec im looking at contains a 4870 X2. Would this case be large enough to house this card on a Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 motherboard?.

yes but IICR you would need to remove the middle hdd cage

You can keep the middle HDD cage but you'll only be able to mount one drive in it.

The rear case fan is blowing inwards and the 2 cpu fans are blowing towards it.

All 3 fans are pushing the same direction and blowing it out the back as osullivanpt stated.

on TD24's pic: the golf-ball fan is blowing IN, because all fan's output are at the part where there are the frame to hold the mid-section. and what a strange cooler for that BFG card.
