*****Official ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA thread*****

you must be the one person in the world using the squirrel fan on that board

49c load with 1.55v through it sounds optimistic, especially considering it's summer .....unless you have A/C?

Set up is slightly different in the case - have an 80mm fan blowing directly over the NB. Made typo before - temps are 59c for the cpu, not 49c.

Sorry long post, but this seems to be a strange issue!

I have the following:

Asus Maximus Formula SE (BIOS 0907)
Q6600 G0
4GB Dominator PC2-8500 (4 x 1GB)
Nvidia 8800 GTX
Enermax Galaxy 1000w PSU
2 x WD Raptor 74GB RAID 0
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB
2 x Barracuda 7200.11 Raid 1
Vista Ultimate 64Bit
Dell 2407WFP HC

I have the system overclocked at 400 x 9 (3.6Ghz) and the Vcore voltage set to Auto. Any manual voltage I set caused the boot to fail. On auto the voltage is set to 1.39v

The Ram runs at 1066MHz has a voltage set of 2.17v

I am using BIOS 0907 as it is the later bios do not allow me to overclock using auto.

My Voltages are:
CPU: 1.39v
North Bridge: 1.65v
South Bridge: 1.09v
DIMM: 2.16v

The issue I have is that the PC randomly reboots but mostly I notice it when (in order of likelihood)

1 – Playing games
2 – Web browsing with Firefox and using MWP (never crashes with IE but not used IE with WMP)
2 – Streaming video from the PC

The PC does randomly reboot at other times when I am away from the PC too - maybe a couple of times a week

When the PC reboots the CPU temps seem okay – around 60 max, and the GPU and NB temps are okay although the Northbridge idles at 57/58C which is a bit warm.

I have rebuilt the machine and it reboots exactly as before. I am thinking there is an issue with the Motherboard, Memory, or Graphics Card.

I am thinking of switching to 2 x 2GB sticks of memory as that seems like the easiest fix, after that I would consider changing the mobo probably to the Asus Rampage Formula and finally the gfx card.

Have any of you got any suggestions / theories on this?

I have determined the memory is causing my random reboots - I have determined this by running prime 95 – in small FTT all is fine but a minute or so of blend and I get the reboot.

I am running
Asus Maximus Formula SE (BIOS 1207)
Q6600 G0 )C to 3.6GHZ
4GB Dominator PC2-8500 (4 x 1GB) @1066, 5,5,5,15 & 2.14v

Firstly I am unsure if there is anything I can try with the RAM before I replace it (is it likely that the RAM is bad or just not compatable?)

Is running the RAM at 2.14v a little high?

I know that a while back when I was using auto settings the RAM was receiving just over 2.2v due to asus over volting issues.

I may try taking out 2 sticks and running the same tests with 2 and then the other 2 and see if I can locate a bad stick.

Secondly – if required I will swap it for 2 x 2GB sticks and was wondering weather to stick with the Corsair Dominator PC2-8500 or if something else would be more suitable.

Thanks for your help

This issue has now been solved.

Put simply the issue was running 4 sticks of RAM in the motherboard caused the memory to malfunction. Running any combination of 2 sticks allows me to rune Prime95 for hours. As soon as I put in 4 sticks – even at stock and a reduced RAM speed the test fails and the reboot occurs.

I am replacing my 4 x 1GB sticks with 2 x 2GB.

For more info these post from the Corsair support forum detail it well:

Right gents, I need help. Just finished my first C2D setup and first problem is that I can't boot with 2x2GB in dual channel only single channel (it's set at the right timings and voltage). RAM in question is OCZ2P10004GK.

Second problem is that the BIOS is mind boggling and overclocking has certainly moved on since Socket Barton days. I know the basics behind it, FSB x multiplier and give it some more voltage on the core. Now here I'm just plain confused, there are so many voltages and options I don't recognise it hurts. I tried reading the manual and reading overclocking stickies but I'm still confused to hell. The CPU I'm trying to overclock is E2140 (until I can get myself a nice E0 Wolfdale) and it does have quite a high VID (1.3250) but I can't imagine that it would have a problem reaching 3.0Ghz at all. I have a Ultra-120 Extreme on top of it with idle temps at 35C and load at 47-48C so plenty of headroom there.

Anyone else having cold boot issues with this? Seemed to get worse lately and sometime same happens on restarts, it turns on but nothing happens.

Problems with 1207

Hi,

I've had weird problems with my Maximus Formula since I flashed to 1207 from 907

I cannot use the transaction booster. Any changes and my bios reports invalid vid or overclock has failed, or something like that.

Also, When I do get the settings stable (I had 4ghz on my QX9650), as soon as I cold boot, it also comes up with the VID error again.

Currently running at stock would you believe! Can't even increase the multiplier above 9.5x without some serious dabbling with the VCore voltage.

Harumph

How did you flash it?
I had some seriously weird problems when flashing, first 3 attempts i couldnt overclock, always booted as failed.
As soon as i loaded optimized defaults then flashed its worked a treat since ;)

I think I loaded the defaults, then flashed using the easyflash in the bios. What you thinking?

Load the defaults and flash the same one again, some people had to flash the same bios twice and i had to do it about 3 times before it worked

hey guys, im gonna try flashing the new BIOS in a bit, just thought i post quickly before hand. I got this mobo with the Q6600, but im looking to get some new memory. Ive got the OCZ PC6400 Gold Dual Channel, but im looking into getting some PC2-8500 sticks. Whats peoples opinions on what ot get? At the moment im looking at these, due to price.
Cheers guys, Adam
