*** Official DCS World Thread ***

As far as I understand it the L-39 will be the testbed for the Multiplayer Multicrew feature for DCS as a whole.

IMO its going to require a severe gutting of the current Net code.

A-10c, Ka-50, FC3, Huey- in this order, my favourite modules in DCS. Ka-50 is just much more integrated into the modern battlefield world that the huey, its more capable and more fun with its long range sniper canon and laser guided missiles. Huey is great to take for a quick spin though.

Cant wait for EDGE middle east map (should be out this year allegedly) and the F/A-18 of course:)

I doubt it. The Russians are even less keen on sharing information on their military hardware with a consumer entertainment company, even a Russian one, than we are. Never say never, but near as damn it I think.

But of course it depends how accurately they, or a third party wanted to make it. The A-10C is only around 70% accurate and people are mostly happy with that, so plenty of room for more creative licence in my view.

Even bigger problem is that Ka52 is a two seater helicopter, you'd have to rely on AI/your friend to do the weapons systems or the flying. Neither approach is sellable - coop is nice, but not when you're forced into it. Same thing with other two seater helis and planes like the Apache, F14 etc. Ka50 is the only single seat attack chopper, so its perfect for being flown in a game too.

I have been running through the first instant action mission on a10c and finally become confident with the weapon systems, mavs are staight forward, laser guided bombs just need some work in the profile but am struggling with some features.

I don't have enough missiles and bombs to hit all the targets. The first two waypoints have soft skin targets so a quick gun run kills them. Now I presume I should Mav all the AAA threats which is easy. Which leaves me guns for the t 72s. When I make a gun run on them their heavy caliber machine gun normally tags me.

I also try and get my wingman to use missiles on my SPI but he does not seem to fire.

Also what is the danger radius of the shilka. Looking at the end game stats it claims is effective to 3000m or did I misread as I seem to be getting hit by it way higher.

Also when the RWR enables near the shilka does it mean it is actively tracking or merely it has turned on its radar dish?

To transmit data to our wingman you need to enable SPI broadcast (its some function on he right of your map MFD, cant remember exact name). So you can ask wingman to attack targets at spi, you could return to rearm at your base.

RWR enables even before Shilka (or any far away radar) can track you as their radar beam is strong enough to reach your plane but is too weak to be reflected back, so initially you can see it on your rwr but the enemy can not see you. I usually attacked it from 20000ft with laser guided bombs as it can shoot mavericks out of he sky and has range advantage if you use mavs. But if you have terrain masking, then pop up and quick mav attack would usually work as well.

3000 meters is probably max range of Shilka 's canon, its missiles are certainly longer range than that.

Laser guided bombs are very straight forward I dont think you need to tweak their profile at all. Just lock the target, drop the bomb when CCRP says so and watch the timer on HUD. Press and hold pinkie button over the last 9 seconds of bombs flight to lase and guide it onto target. If you enable laser too early, the bomb will run out of kinetic energy and usually miss.

Profile is only needed for autolasing, but why bother when the above method is dead easy.

I have been setting it to auto lase but will try this technique later this evening.

What about attacking battle tanks with the cannon, I was under the impression this would be bread and butter for the A10 but I am struggling. I'm confident at 7000ft engaging everything but when I go for the tanks I come a little unstuck.

I always use manual lasing and have very high hit rate, remember that laser bombs were designed to be used even against moving targets and they do work VERY nicely against moving tanks etc. As long as you dont lase too early - 9-8 seconds rule works for every situation i believe.

A10 was designed in the 1970s, common battle tanks of that era would have been its bread and butter, but tanks and APCs have evolved since then. APCs in particular like BMP2 and BMP3 are deadly to A10 with their very high rate of fire 20mm autocanons and anti aircraft targeting systems. Modern tanks (in DCS) have only machine guns to defend themselves, but still are a tough opponent. Attack at high angle dive from their rear and pull out (not upwards though)when your gun range finder says 1.3-1.5 miles, immediately start rolling with fully pressed rudder pedal to evade their fire.

This is supposedly a joke tutorial for real life A10 pilots but it does get the basic tactics across quite well:

The Combined arms mission with the Player Ka-50 are fun. Stick the Shark on Auto Hover while you command the whole battle field, then jump back to the Shark to assist with the Battle.

I find that the game crashing after 20 minutes of playing this mission somewhat detracts from the fun
