Frankly, DCS is better outside of Steam. The beta is NOT even available on Steam and keys for the modules are not fully moveable between Steam and Standalone. If you're genuinely thinking of buying some modules, go standalone.
Just for reference, all of my other games are on Steam, but I wouldn't touch DCS on Steam with a bargepole.

Have to disagree on that to a point. As you know I've had massive issues being able to keep the standalone client up to date, and huge issues with it randomly deleting all my modules and terrain, the steam version is hassle free for me.

On the other hand you're right about the modules, they're cheaper outside steam by a fair bit
 
I've got DCS working on my new 43" 4K 120 Hz Mango. Wow it is amazing playing at this resolution and refresh/size!
 
Holy mother of god, those sounds, it can't sound that good surely?? When it's at full chat afterburners roaring as it banks away from the camera, it's like I'm actually at an airshow :eek::D

The DCS standalone server is now testing in the wild, beginning with the Burning Skies server.
Not sure what the changes are, but it sounds like they've removed the 3D graphics engine (great for reducing hardware requirements), and have added some functionality for use by server admins, e.g. easy ability to kick players. I'm very much looking forward to understanding whether it's multi-core (probably not) and the typical system resource usage. It "might" be possible to run it easily on a fairly mundane PC. Fingers crossed.

Looks like the F18 will be getting HARM missiles and some other functional updates in the next few weeks too.
If the F14 does arrive pre-Xmas (not likely IMO), will be a really good Xmas.
 
Yes indeed, dedicated server would be great, been wating about a decade for ED to create one
BIS managed one for arma3 in about 3 months while it was still in alpha
 
So word is that because VAEO went under, ED will not be able to most likely keep the Hawk in DCS after patch 2.5.4
this is due to ED not having the source code
