****Official Doom 4 Thread****

The "call of doom" looked vaguely interesting, you'd think they would release it as a freebie instead of just burying it, obviously some of it was playable at least.

Its not the perfect game but if you like killing things while moving and side stepping its ok. Game throws lots of enemies at you sometimes and you just gotta do you best with what you got to kill them all.

Hi guys,

Getting very near the end of this now, having thoroughly enjoyed myself - every second of the way... question, is there any single player dlc (out now or in the future) and is it worth getting?

Thanks!

None out just yet, but I think there will be more content in the future. :)

Thanks! I think I'll uninstall when I've completed then, save a 'bit' of space...

Looking at all the (multiplayer) dlc on Steam would suggest there's no more official stuff expected. The in-game menu gives you options for community maps etc. I might give Arcade Mode a whirl before completely getting rid :D

I'm still unsure weather to get this lol I have around £25 to spend in paypal and so far its the choice of this, titan fall 2 or rocket league... I hate choices lol

just seen the sales have ended :( so if I buy will have to try and find on a key site lol

You can get Rocket League (great fun) and Doom (bought it in the sales myself, not started it yet but only read good things) off cdkeys.com for just under £20 in total and that's before any discount codes you may be able to find online. They usually do 5% off if you get the code off their Facebook.

So I completed SP... excellent gaming experience overall, well happy.

There's definitely no official SP content on its way right? i think I read that the Season Pass is complete and that has nothing anyway.

What's the timeline for the next instalment?

Just beaten this, thoughts below:

+Does the core elements of a FPS well i.e. weapons, monsters etc
+Guns feel suitably meaty, i.e. double-barrelled *BANG*, have some of that. The first time I knocked back a Hell Knight I smiled and thought yeah, you nailed how this gun should feel.
+Acceptable game length
+Good graphics
+Acceptable performance considering I'm using a mid-range card from 2012, most of the time it runs around 70-110fps with drops as low as 40 in the worst places (probably about 4 occasions in the game where it was becoming noticeably less smooth).
+Reward system is generally good, it's nice upgrading weapons etc
+Auto-map makes a welcome return, I always felt it a shame that something we had back in era of DOS gaming had kind of been done away with
+Bit more of a fun/arcade focus on than Doom3, not much in the way of dark corridors and shock scares etc
+Proper boss fights that let you make sure of the arsenal of weaponry you have saved up rather than some stupid gimmick involving switches or whatever, they even got the balance right in that like Doom, the Cyberdemon is actually tougher than the final Spider Mastermind boss (I think I needed about half a dozen attempts on the CD whereas SM went down first time)

-Performance doesn't seem very scalable with options, i.e. I don't really gain much framerate dropping several settings from High to Low
-Can't set weapon priority for auto-switch, it seems to favour shotgun over super shotgun, machine gun over minigun etc which is annoying
-Chainsaw seems OP/simplistic, basically a no-skill instant kill weapon rather than you having to wield it yourself. I probably used it maybe 10 times in total (normally I forgot about it, could have been useful against pinkies etc)
-Few annoying occasions where if you progress too far into a level you can't go back for collectibles etc as the way back is blocked, this is annoying when playing the game for the first time because you don't know if you are actually near the exit and should turn back, or if you will be returning near to an area again (dependent on whether the level progression is linear or cyclical etc)
-Bit of a slow start, it isn't really until Argent Tower that you actually get a decent number of monsters coming your way at once
-Default ammo capacity is a bit low for my liking, you can only get 10 shots out of the SSG for example. I know you can upgrade it but to me that was really just dealing with an annoyance, I wanted to spent my argent cells on health and armour first as I figured that would give me the best chance of success (kinda felt like ammo would be wasted given I never run out of ammo for all weapons).
-Outdoor level design a bit poor at times, a few too many ramps and a couple of places where you should be able to climb up but are blocked from doing so
-I'd agree with the comment about about level pacing, i.e. it is a series of discrete battles rather than one seamless level so you can't charge around orchestrating a fight with 30+ monsters like you can in Doom2. Probably a byproduct of the checkpoint system

Overall this is a good game and kind of felt like a reboot should to me; it borrows heavily on the Doom lore and retains some key design elements, but re-imagines it in better environments, slightly enhanced monsters, slicker experience, better story etc. The fact it has been well received in general is quite re-assuring to me, as I wasn't sure that there still the demand for this sort of traditional FPS (more combat, less cinematics, carry as many guns as you want, not overly focused on 'realism' etc) any more

IMHO the game levelling on "Easy" isn't that easy. Maybe I do indeed suck but I've played through numerous other games on medium or even hard (various Fallouts, Skyrim, Deus Ex, Far Cry, Crysis) without the issues I'm seeing in Doom 2016. The original Dooms challenged you sometimes with ammo and health conservation but the level design allowed you to manage this. When the gameplay consists of running from one arena clustershoot to the next one with pickups few and far between, it's not fun.

The whole point of an "Easy" level is so that if you are struggling you can walk through the game, see what you've paid for then maybe up the challenge next time around.

I'd say this game is certainly easier than Far Cry (e.g. climbing volcano section) and probably most of the others mentioned (haven't really played Skyrim). I thought perhaps it might depend on your playstyle but if you've beaten Ultimate Doom/Doom2 then the general run'n'gun approach should be fairly familiar aside from the 'locked in arena' element. I never ran out of ammo on normal difficulty despite not putting any argent into it until Health and Armour were maxed out, perhaps the key is to focus on making glory kills to maintain your resources, and make heavy use of automap to ensure you get most of the upgrades etc.

Im pretty sure most FPS games that are not concerned with real world military have a platforming sequence. It breaks the play up a bit to make the journey a bit more varied and even sharpen your senses for jumping, however 99% of the time its a pure headache. I liked the tower first time but yeah, i wouldn't want more than one platforming area in any FPS! You played shadow warrior? That's got me spewing obscenities for some repeating jumping sections! Doom does it right - just one big feature level and thats mostly it for pitfalls.

I hate platformers but Doom isn't too bad compared to the sort of FPS we used to get about 15-20 years ago. Jedi Knight games, Area51, even Halflife games etc did this. The tower section I wasn't convinced on at first but I actually thought was OK in the end because it had a proper fight section near the end with powerup etc, first time in the game where I thought OK here's some proper group combat where I can unload a few different weapons like you get in serious sam games etc.

In general though....
No manual save option + infrequent checkpoints + platforming section + instant death if you fall = epic fail

Finally got around to playing this, surprised by just how smooth it runs with everything maxxed out @ 3440x1440.

I've just got out of Hell (for the first time?) and off heading 80km away on the tram.

Been good fun so far and there's been times where I didn't want the combat to stop as the soundtrack was great.
