How did you know your unranked MMR?

I stopped playing ranked for a long ass time.

When I solo queued unranked I watched my games go from normal skill > high skill > very high skill.

When I queue ranked now I only get into high skill. I can also tell just by the general skill level of the games.

<3.2k normal
3.2k<MMR<3.7k high
>3.7k very high

look see :P you can see my ranked games are high and my unranked are very high.

they really need to change that because it isn't even remotely accurate.

Well it's not in their hands Murray because it comes direct from Valve not DotaBuff, that's why not all the games have labels. Because not all the games are given them. If it was something DotaBuff calculated themselves it would be on all the games.

And for the record it is pretty accurate, second I passed 3.2k MMR the games went from normal to High.

Just google "dotabuff skill brackets" there's plenty of stuff on it, with plenty of anecdotal evidence and messages from DotaBuff staff. And to be perfectly clear, it is the game that is in a skill bracket it doesn't refer to the individual. If you queue with a 4.5k, a 2.5 and three 3.5ks your average MMR will be 3.5k and the game will be 'high'.

I am talking about Valve. 3.2k isn't high mmr. Neither is 3.7k very high.

My mistake. And tbf that is pretty true. Although at the time when matchmaking was released 3.2k was the 90th percentile or something.

The blog isn't loading atm for me but it has the stats in it:

http://blog.dota2.com/2013/12/matchmaking/

Got them:

5% 1100
10% 1500
25% 2000
50% 2250
75% 2731
90% 3200
95% 3900
99% 4100

Here we go again... :D

Well it's all relative really.

When you look at all the super high people 6k+ really they are the very high skill players, but then if you think about someone who is 1k MMR. Assuming +25 points for every win they would have to win 88 games without a loss to get into 'high' skill.

Idk, unless Valve releases some actual data on it there's not much to go on. The data in my last post is quite old now around 8 months so things will have no doubt changed.

I am under no illusion that I'm a 'very high skill' player. Although I do believe I belong in the so called bracket, and judging by my recent easy wins I'm on my way to it.

No one is saying all 5 should get last hits. Cores should be, supports shouldn't.

What if all 5 are cores?

Had we been very high skill, we would've won that 4v5 game yesterday :(

But at least you found your hero, Musty. You play a mean Sniper! haha

I do like Sniper. At my skill level he seems very effective, I think it's because of his range and his ult. Also being Agility he 'naturally' gains attack speed and armour which also helps.
Again, at my level the Sniper player usually does well. I understand that at higher levels he's not used much because he's quite easy for a team to counter. I'm not quite surw how and I guess a lot of people around my level don't either.

Anyone around tonight with a team I could possibly join in with (if there's space)?

There is no such thing as 5 cores. If you're doing that then something has gone wrong and at least one of you needs to make a sacrifice. Some heroes can jungle in a pinch (Lifestealer, Prophet, Lycan for example) and others make capable supports if skilled right (mirana, Wraith King, Kunkka for example)

Razor, Weaver, Doom, Viper and Phantom Assassin?
I'm not sure about Weaver and Phantom Assassin, but Razor, Doom, and Viper are are cores right? Or at least Carries.

They're all cores. That's why it's a terrible lineup. Doom can jungle but nobody can really be effective without farm in that lineup.

So what to do, if you play a core as support you get told you need to practice LHs. If you all go for LH then you'll surely all suffer unless one person is much better at it.

I full understand it's not a line up an experienced group would pick, but we're obviously not talking about an experienced group here (I believe cuffylad is about lvl13, so would guess the others aren't far off). I'm level 4, but if my team mates had picked any 4 of the 5 listed there I wouldn't know what to go for to make that work. IF I had even spotted that (I'm usually more concerned about who I'm going to be) then I may have picked BroodMother, Enigma or Venomancer and tried to Jungle.
Even if I picked support I don't really know what I'm supposed to do or how I get gold (unless I jungle, but then I seem like a Jungler).

I know there are lots of things I need to learn, but I suspect some of them I can only really do by playing. An example of which is to learn how long to stay in the laning phase. I'll be farming away and all of a sudden get loads of kill notification pop-up. I'm sure some of it is just down to map awareness, but I'm not sure if there's an approximate level that I should start checking for people moving to gank...
