*** Official Dota 2 Thread ***

Every time I fancy trying this game, I come to this thread and find some kind of drama going down. Is it often like that in-game? Would kind of put me off giving it a go, to be honest. :p

In the event that that isn't the case, where should I start reading to see what's what? :)

I'm new as well mate and tbh the Dota community can be quite harsh in general, but I just ignore most of them. Its a great game but does have a very steep learning curve. I would start here:

http://www.purgegamers.com/welcome-to-dota-you-suck

Pick a character play some bot games. Also add me on steam, I dont mind hitting some pubs with you and showing you what I know, which tbh is very little but It always better to play with someone :)

Not gonna lie, you're going to find a lot of people very annoying very quickly. Some games can be amicable/friendly/a learning experience. Others can be horrible... just people creating a very hostile atmosphere.

It is something you have to get used to. But as per, the best place to start is to read Purge's "Welcome to Dota, You Suck" guide... if you Google it, it'll be the first thing that comes up.

I just had a game and it was someones first game on my team (I must be pretty bad if I'm getting matched with them haha).

I was quite happy to tell him stuff at first and he asked where the secret shop was and everyone pinged it out on the map. He still kept asking and started swearing and we told him to look at the map. At the end of the game he was swearing at us and the team had enough.

The training tells you a lot. I understand that playing with real people is better but I think even the training puts 5 real players against bots for 10 games or something.

The thread has drama because there is quite a gap in skill with not much middle ground. So it's going to happen. I play a lot, I'm bad. But when I have had enough I just spend 10 minutes with my gf and life is good ;) haha

Where do i find this hero challenge?

Had a look at lunch time but cants seem to find it

I'm probably looking right at it :p

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll take a look at that guide and get myself a basic idea. The main thing I want to avoid is a game with a toxic community and lots of fighting. I've recently stopped playing Chivalry in part due to this, and that's a game where chat isn't essential - something tells me that communication is crucial in Dota 2, so I'd only really want to play with mostly nice people. :)

I'll download it and run through the tutorials once I'm done reading. :D

Pickup games can go either way, helpful people or just *****. When you find someone who is nice, add them as a friend, the others just ignore :D

This is from someone who is still sub 100 matches so still sucks quite a bit at the game.

I think the best thing is to ignore the in game taunting/raging/arguing. It's hard and at times I can't help myself but if it gets a lot just slap them on ignore and finish the game.

You'll generally find people to play with in this thread who are around your ability level to play with or if not you might be lucky (like I have with atlas and co) and find a few people you can play and enjoy games with.

It's a good game and it's a good one to enjoy and get a bit competitive in but try not to take it too seriously (I'm guilty of doing it at times as you can see in this thread) and just enjoy it, you'll get better at lot faster when you stop having hernia thanks to the useless ******** you have the displeasure of playing with :p

Enjoy and if you ever want some help give us a shout, I'll try if I have a bit of spare time. I trained Musty, that's why he's progressed so well :D

Then laugh when he procs your linkens. :P

Linkens is not a common item on Razor. You would normally make Sceptre, BKB and maybe a S&Y/Manta. It's all semantics anyway, I was just making a point that it's not as easy and just popping static link

Don't even know if razors passive procs when you have linkens thinking about it. Every game is situational so who knows what you will buy. Semantics though, I agree.

So, played Bloodseeker tonight.
Quite enjoyed it. Helped that we won quite easily I think. Our Weaver won us the game.
I went 8/4/7 with 101 LHs. Neither of which were helped by the fact I went middle lane (in-game guide said BS was middle lane) and our Lion decided that he was going to go mid too. I thought it was odd him playing support on mid lane. But he wasn't, he was going to try to farm too. LHing using the I'll just auto-attack it until it dies technique. Needless to say Wraith King opposite us got a few levels ahead and was able to take us down quite easily. Only plus side was the solo XP set our Weaver up nicely.

EDIT:
Question, is BS's Q attack supposed to be used as a damage buff or a silence that deals upto 180 damage?

Your best bet is to get one level in it early mid game and use it as a silence/damage dealer innthe chase down. But be very carful using it like this later on as the damage buff is silly.

On a side note bs and lion make very gd mids both because getting your ultis early means you can gank early. If it happens again get a few ranks then head into jungle....sometimes you just gotta be the bigger man with some of the idiots in dota

Yeah I used it to initiate on WK so he couldn't use his stun on me, then his right-click hurt! So learn't to use it if he was running away to wear a little more life down.

Didn't want to use it on allies as I didn't want to silence and damage them, should probably have asked though. Drow Ranger might have liked it being largely right-click (isn't she?)

His Ulti was nice though, use it on an enemy and then run just out of reach and keep moving away so they chase me and run themself to death :)

Passive boost from enemies under 50% health is nice too.
