Cheers, got it sorted via the asterisk method. I'm not using any mod manager. I didn't see the point at first as I didn't think I'd be using many mods. Now that the game is maturing and the GECK is soon to follow I'll start modding it properly like Skyrim.
Probably not. I just finished my fifth playthrough and kept putting off Automation as I was trying to max one or two companions out. That and there comes a point when it is quite hard to walk away from the main story to do side missions and you kind of get swept along into the ending. However the problem as with all the previous playthroughs is that once you finish the main story, more so than FO3 there just doesn't seem any point in playing on beyond tying up a few loose ends. So in the end I didn't bother with it.
Only (non-spoiler) advice I would give re Automation, as Ace mentioned a few posts above it is quite brutal with much tougher enemies than the vanilla game (at least on a par with The Forged if not worse). Not advised to attempt it at L15 when it proc's but wait until around L30 and/or have both Gun Nut and one of your gun skills maxed out. Melee is not really going to help you as you don't want to be assaulting these guys at close quarters.
I feel massively behind the curve in Fallout 4 ha. I'm STILL on my first playthrough, and only been in the institute about an hour. I'm massively underwhelmed. The layout is cool and it feels a bit like the Citadel in ME1, but the graphics are so poor, even with mods. Looking forward to completing it now, but in honesty I don't think I'll be replaying it again in a hurry. It's going to be too much of a kick in the teeth simply deleting all my hard work in the settlements, and I don't think I can be bothered to do it all again...
Don't feel bad Amraam... I'm still on my first playthrough... still only just made it to DC and was on the way towards the Castle at around ~40hrs played... In December last year... haven't felt motivated or interested to go back to it at all
Been watching through a bunch of Gopher's vids on the mods that have come out since I last played - trying to motivate myself towards playing it some more perhaps with a few mods to address some of the things that were annoying me

I avoided the main quest for ages, then got sucked back into it, did loads of story stuff all together, culminating in
building the teleporter with the help of the Railroad
expecting the next bit to be the big ending, and instead
I got the massively signposted 'Sean' reveal followed by... why not go have a look round this big base and talk to loads of relatively generic scientist characters and stuff.
The pacing is all over the place. Whilst that's clearly a big issue to tackle for any open-world game, the part I'm talking about can only be reached via a relatively scripted sequence, so is one of the few parts they could control pace of quite well.
Hopefully there's not too much plot left, as to be honest whilst I want to see it through, I've kind of gone off it. I know if I leave it too long, when I go back I'll be lost.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm at. I've been and introduced myself, and tbh, I can't remember any of the characters. I'm walking around in BoS armour, loads of weapons, they know I've killed many synths and a courser, yet do they even bat an eyelid? The same is said when I walk around a Railroad HQ with Danse as my companion, and neither party comments. I get it's difficult to account for every situation, but it's like in this Fallout iteration, they've not even bothered trying. I've enjoyed the game - with ~250 hours, that's obvious, but I don't think I'll be rushing back to it. I might give Far Harbour a go, but it depends on when I can get it cheap.
It's interesting, I have finished automatron and the main game, and i didnt use power armour really at all. Maybe three quests MAX. I just didnt see the point in it.

I've rebuilt my Red Rocket base three times to accommodate all the ones I find. I never wear them, but I can't help but collect them. They're annoying and destroy any stealth. It's just as annoying when a companion is wearing it as it makes the screen shudder as they approach.
Have you guys seen the mod which allows you to have a robotic "exoskeleton" which you can attach power armor parts to... it sort of gives you some of the benefits of the power armor without it being a "vehicle" that you climb into and it alters the hud, game etc... Might be a good solution?
(To be honest I think they shouldn't have given you fully working power armor suits right out of the gate and kept it as something very powerful to aspire to over time... maybe you'd find an arm here, a leg there and eventually cobble together something resembling a full suit... and then continue to find ways to improve it over time...)

I really wanted to like power armour, but I hated how I felt like I was constantly 'gaming' the game, by exiting my suit during dialogues to makes sure people could see my fancy suit and hat. It got really boring, so I ended up just using Combat Armour and charisma hat/glasses, and then I realised I could get more armour by wearing a ballistic weaved bath robe and trilby. The whole armour system needs an update -- mods of this scale are way too buggy and mess up my game every patch/dlc day.

I'd drop a link but am at work... it was in one of Gopher's mod sanctuary vids maybe around episode 15-20ish... It's pretty cool too you get like a visible exo-skeletal spine and then you can choose to bolt on various parts and mod them like you would the power armor... so you can have just power-armor legs and no arms/torso... or just one arm... or whatever... plenty of options etc.
Hmm not really used Afterburner when playing recently but yesterday when I entered Bunker Hill I noticed it got a bit stuttery so fired Afterburner up and checked the game today. Within the walls of Bunker Hill I'm around 30 FPS but going out through either gate and I'm back to 60 FPS.
Anyone know why this is, or just another quirk by the game engine and Bethesda's way of making their game ?
Thought I'd try this again now the Survival mode is out...got to the deathclaw and it simply ran at me and I died. Then it loads a game 20 minutes earlier.
Meh. I like the idea of no manual saving in theory(do you think they may have been playing Dark Souls?!) but all it does is highlights the deficiencies of the game imo. Dialogue becomes even more pointless as the only thing saving it was the ability to save-scum as no matter how much charisma you have you can still fail speech checks.
4 is by far the weakest in emotional terms. Few people care about the main storyline. The roleplaying has been mostly removed. The umodded game doesn't even show you what your character will say in the dialogue choices! The main emotional content is in background stuff (skeletons, notes and holotapes) and side stuff (a few NPCs, e.g. the backstories of Cait and Nick Valentine if you gain enough affinity with them).
The previous games are far better in that respect. 1 and 2 are quite different and are really dated now, but 3 and New Vegas are in the same style as 4. All of them have far better roleplay and storytelling than 4. Smosh memorably described the storyline of 3 as "helping your dad install a water filter", which is technically correct. It's still a far more compelling story than the one in 4.
The saving grace of 4 is settlement building, despite the fact that it's a badly implemented tacked-on thing. There are lots of great mods for it, though.

Fallout 4 is notorious for rubbish framerates in towns and some open areas (generally high open rooftops, with the Corvega factory roof being the best known example).
Try removing the settlement items limit and building a complex settlement. You can cut your framerate by 75%. If you really want to go to extremes, select a whole building in build mode and watch your framerate plummet to slideshow levels.
Some mods help, e.g. the texture optimisation project, but it's inherent in the game.
