**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

must... resist... preorder... been burned... too many times... resistance... faltering... looks... too... good...

...damn...
My finger has been twitching over that button since the weekend... trying to resist but the fear of it going up in price is racking my willpower

Why's that?

I've already been over this, but I love RPGs...Where you get to create a character and play them the way you want. You should be in control of as much of the character as possible. There are many reasons why I believe a voiced protagonist is a very bad things for 'RPGs', but here is a short list

-Paraphrasing. It is killing RPGs. Picking responses and then the character says something completely different. This leads to not knowing exactly what the character will say which just kills role-playing.
-Your character is having a set voice forced upon him, taking the character away from you. It is going to feel less like 'my' character than if I were reading the actual lines they would say and adding my own voice/mannerisms etc
-Related to that, you can't tell the emphasis of what is going to be said before it is being said. With no voiced PC you choose a line and it is said however you imagine it.
-Characters feel less unique- Are you going to create a Wise-cracking smartass? mega strong hardass? 60yo doctor? 18yo gang member?...All gonna sound the same.
-Less unique responses- New Vegas had some amazing lines(especially the intimidating ones), but with lines being voiced, I'm pretty sure they will be mostly gone now.
-Mods- Gonna be an obvious gulf in quality as the PC will be voiced for the main game, but not for mod quests, or if they are, it will be by someone different.

I don't want to make it seem like I'm not excited for the game, I really am(it has probably been pretty evident how much I love New Vegas, and to a slightly lesser extent FO3 over the years), but I can't help but be disappointed in this latest 'feature' being introduced as I feel it will take the series away from what made it so great- the freedom you get. It is still almost certainly going to be a GOTY contender though.

How soon do they send out the keys?

My experience of pre-ordering games on CD Key sites, is that they release the key on release date.

I've had that whole pre-order debacle in the past and when emailing them with "when will I get my key, as pre-loading has started?" I get the response "we will release keys on the release date."

I guess it depends on whether the discount vs guarantee of pre-loading is worth it.

But it maybe different with FO4.

From what I read the key gets released at 00:00 on Tuesday, so then need to activate on Steam and DL.

Well whenever the email arrives, doubt it'll be midnight on the button but we live in hope.

Skills and perks combined into one (might limit creating truly unique characters. Again, limits RP potential.)

No idea about the rest of the stuff you've said, but this isn't really true. They've been combined to make a massive tree, your character isn't limited.
It's a big perk tree then each perk has a mini tree. So 70 main perks and over 230 total perks when you include the mini perk trees. Sounds like far more options than previous ones, and as such they've said you'll level up faster.

:( wont be playing on release, still waiting to see if leap computing pull off what they say. If they don't I'll have to consider a massive upgrade or xbone.

So long as the voice actor (and actress) is good the spoken dialogue doesn't really bother me.

For example - Femshep in Mass Effect was ace :D

I never did really play through as the fella.

I can imagine someone will make a mod to disable the PC voice if you don't like it, so don't worry. Might even be something as simple as deleting a file in the game directory.

Voice disabling would only be ok coupled with subtitles, otherwise NPCs would be responding to things that the PC says that you would have no idea he even said. The other issues would still remain as well.

What the game absolutely has to have though is the full line that the PC will say visible before you choose it. I have no idea why they would want to hide it from you other than a conscious effort to take the character away from you?...Reminds me of The Witcher 2(probably the worst example of this) where the very first dialogue option you have in the game is 'very funny' and if you choose it Geralt says "**** off"...Why even write 'very funny' as the option?

I've accepted it, but as I said, adjusted my expectations accordingly.

Also VincentHanna - I have no doubt the Voice acting will be top notch, that is not in question.

Cool, thanks for that... and are they still the best price?*

**I don't know when I became this tight? But considering I put in excess off 150 hours into New Vegas, £28 seems a bargain :D

I believe they are still the cheapest, give them a facebook like and you get another 5% off: https://www.facebook.com/cdkeyscom/app_393344207416996

Not being cheap, being smart I say, why pay more :D

£42 for both full game and season pass off CD keys which activates on steam or just the full game off steam for £40. I know what I would pick :p
