***Official Final Fantasy XIV Thead***

Where did you read this? If it's going to be like Guild Wars or Phantasy Star Online, I won't bother :( I wanted WoW but with Final Fantasy!

FFXIV Developer said:
Q: What’s the purpose of using so many instanced areas in the game?

A: We really want to make a game where you can play when you want to play. The guildleves system is an example of this. In order to be able to monopolize an area and not have to wait in line behind other people, we decided to use instanced areas all over the place.

Taken from a Famitsu developer Q&A.

So basically there will never be competition for claiming so called HNMs etc? I know XI didn't have dungeons etc for the most part if you exclude dynamis/limbus iirc so in one way this could be good but might take out some of the excitment when you got that claim or have I got this wrong?

Never played WoW btw.

Seems like there won't be competition for anything. They want all players to have access to the content at all times.

Trouble is, when you remove all "player interference" as they call it, you also remove almost all the good player interaction too.

Which means fully instanced + no player "interference" means that players may only come together to show each other their loot.

Not just a problem with FFXIV, a problem with most newer "MMOs". Since UO/EQ, they've all chickened out, and wrapped the players in their own protective bubbles, to keep all the players separated.

I see you're point to an extent, we are still in Alpha though so it’s all speculation, time will tell I guess, though I always found XI very addictive but a chore sometimes, where only a low percentage of players were lucky enough to get rare items be it that areas were always crowded and there was always them few link shells on my server that had their pick at rare things iirc, been a couple of years since I played XI so it may have changed. Oh and them god awful windows and waiting around at silly o clock was a pain in the arse as well.

I'm guessing this might limit RMT to an extent though?

yea i hated that in wow i liked the eq2 dungeons that were instanced so multiple dungeons could be open but you could be inside the same one as other people and choose which one to zone into.

wow went to far with instances making them only for your group before wow it was never like that

Eh, just read that in FF14 everything is going to be instanced. That's totally put me off if true.

I just don't see the point in playing an MMO and shielding yourself away from the players :/

This isn't true. I can't speak for later areas but the earlier areas aren't instanced, you are in a general area with everyone else. What they are doing, I believe, is making it so that if you claim a mob or resource node then only you or your group can access it.

They are also making to so that certain quest specific items (possibly including mobs) will only appear to you (or your group) even if you are in an open area.

I have heard talk of some instancing but very little of how much hasn't been shown yet, what I do hope is a number of the XIV equivalent of NM are instanced to make claiming and defeating them easier.

all guildleves so far trigger instanced mobs and instanced mining points etc. so you still travel out into the world where all other PCs are but the mobs you engage only you as the quest holder are allowed to engage. likewise with mining points from guildleves, they vanish after you tap them

I REALLY REALLY hope they have NMs and HNMs that are not instanced. part of the joy of ff11 was the competition, you had to work damn hard.
im confident there will be...

From reading around it looks like the beta will drop as early as 2-3 weeks if all goes well, definately July at some point.

HNMs are horrible. Everyone knows exactly when their spawn "window" opens, so several linkshells all turn up at once. HNM camping consisted of :

1) Turn up in time for window to open. Observe the dozens of people who've turned up.
2) Wait for spawn interval
3) When the HNM doesn't spawn, read a book for 4 minutes, 30 seconds
4) Pay attention for about 30 seconds and be ready to hit a quick-casting spell or ranged ability to claim it for your LS.
5) Repeat steps 3 & 4 until the HNM finally pops and spam for all you're worth. Will the name turn red, or purple? Did I just spend over an hour of boredom to do something worthwhile, or to watch some rival LS take the prize?

HNM competition is a matter of who is able to claim the mob. Let's not forget that these windows can be in the early hours of the morning, and were often pushed there by rival linkshells by deliberately delaying the kill into a time that's better for them and worse for you.

Yeah, I'm glad I left that behind. I loved FFXI but I hated that part of it. Heavily team-based mechanics like trick attack, skillchaining and magic bursting (more so in the early days), challenging missions, awesome cutscenes and characters, imaginitive environments and engaging storylines are what made it great. Grinding, HNM camping and one-dimensional classes are what made it bad.

Roll on XIV :)

If what i just read is true and it has instances then GREAT, i hated that it wasnt in 11, reason i stopped playing after the 30 days, for example was doing a low lvl quest, when i got to the area the mobs spawn location was mobbed with high lvl toons, as the mob dropped a rare item ( maybe 1 in a 1000), i couldnt complete the quest as i couldnt compete with them all, so i just gave up.

They have already said they will be completely overhauling the combat system when Beta starts.

I'd be worried about that! Why do they think beta is a good time to completely change all their design? :p

Vanguard did this... it didn't work out too well for them.

Beta is when you're supposed to be ironing out bugs, not re-designing entire systems. But hey, what do I know? :p

anyone find the ffxiv benchmark make there gpu run really hot? i know its a hot summer and it is running a few degrees hotter than usual, but the ffxiv bench was bumping my gpu up to like 90 degrees, not even the unigine heaven 2 benchmark maxed out makes it run that hot! (like 83) hopefully the actual game wont be this bad.

OMG **** myself when I say this earlier! Booking my 2 weeks off from 22nd Sept. Collectors Edition here I come!
