***Official Final Fantasy XIV Thead***

i've given up on this game, its just not what i thought it would be, its very boring :( especially the idea of only being able to do a bunch of quests every 36 hours.

What is the content though?

All I ever got was levequests like go here kill 5 of these things over and over.

Yeah pretty much the basic leves are like this, but EVERY mmo is like this. The different quests are the main story, which is developing nicely like most final fantasy stories do. At higher levels there are behests, like public quests with big groups acheiving certain goals. I'm not sure if this is there answer to raids and instances though.

One impressive thing is the zones, at least as far I have adventures are seemless no load screens which is nice. As like wow it gives it the 'world' feel.

Is it just me or do most actions take like a second to register! For example I go into active mode and it takes a second before I draw my sword?! Same with swapping equipment etc.

Useful thing to note if you are not going to be playing for a few days. Before I went away I picked up 4 leves and didnt have the time to complete any. Got back tonight done them all and the next 4 were ready to go, so as long as you pick up leves the timer starts for reset. Not much but made me a little cheerier tonight :D

Is this the game in a nutshell?
What's up the the first attack, there's no indication the skill is ready, it doesn't even gray out after each attack, do you just spam it to be as fast as possible with that annoying error sound?

I think it's more the guy wasn't interested in giving it a chance. There is an action bar like ff games. An ability takes up so many action points. On the first level you only have 1 skill so it will be using the same ability. There is no lazyman auto attack you have to go to the immense effort of pushing the button :o after that different abilities become available and it becomes more tactical and interesting, as with every other mmo.

His whine about running around? Lol. Clearly a wow player who wants to stand in a city and just be porter into instances without any effort on his own part and no desire to explore. Though of course that is personal prefernce with mmo's some want a world others just want to get shinies. Each to their own.

Okay, i have a task for you.

Read http://www.xeodesign.com/xeodesign_whyweplaygames.pdf
Here is a research paper that looks at the fundamental question of why we play games. Its conclusion identifies 4 key areas that induce an enjoyable gaming experience.

analysis of best selling games such as
Bejeweled, Halo, Grand Theft Auto (GTA), EverQuest, and Mario Kart Double Dash reveals
that these games create emotion in at least three of the Four Keys.

These are summarised as:
  1. Hard Fun - Emotions from Meaningful Challenges, Strategies, and Puzzles
  2. Easy Fun - Grab Attention with Ambiguity, Incompleteness, and Detail
  3. Altered States - Generate Emotion with Perception, Thought, Behavior, and Other People
  4. The People Factor - Create Opportunities for Player Competition, Cooperation, Performance, and Spectacle.

Now, come back here and justify how, where and why this game
a) Demonstrates each key
b) Introduces something new to enhance each key

I suggest you dont start with Easy Fun, becuse that one is pretty obvious

His whine about running around? Lol. Clearly a wow player who wants to stand in a city and just be porter into instances without any effort on his own part and no desire to explore.

I put it to you, that with relation to the above, he DOES want to explore. He is frustrated because the exploration (easy fun) on offer is boring, pointless, and flat.

I really feel for you if you need to Justify every game you may want to play in this way. If i fancy a game i buy it and play it. It may be good it may not be good. Simple really.

I certainly wouldn't start trolling about a game i haven't ever played.

ahh thats pretty cool, so its probably best to pick up quests all the time and keep yoruself full, regardless! :)

good to know!

I really like the crafting aspect in this game, its actually quite hard!
question though, does the Quality of X item have any effect on the experience you get once you've completed it?

Currently have Carpentry and Leathercrafting... would it be a good idea to pick up Botanist to compliment my Carpentry mad skillz!?.. (or am i thinking of the wrong thing) lol

EDIT: Also, this is loads better with a gamepad.. managed to configure my PS3 controller last night... The only thing i find tricky is targetting, i still have to use the mouse for this ebcause its so sluggish.

blah blah

Pack it in Bunny. You don't like it. No problem. People in here do like it. Why are you so determined to kick holes in it?

Yes the game has faults, I think even people in this thread who like the game admit this but go run your little test on every game you like and I am sure you will find a fault with every game.

@ Indie. I remember you saying you play an archer yeah? Are the carpentry/leatherworker skills something which can be used to make useful stuff for the class as its what I am playing now.

Yeah i play Archer

I've done a bit of research into it and Carpenters can make Arrows and Bows at later levels :)

Leatherworking i just took up because i associate it with Archery.. but had a look and you can make some half decent armour with it all :)

is there any way of finding out what recipes you already know how to make with X profession.. or do you have to check them out on websites?

I don't see any indication when the skill is ready you just have to press the button at some undetermined time ? Like, when the animation has finished, or .5 seconds after, 1 second, what? There's just a button, and some "energy/actions points bar"? Genuinely curious.

He reviews a lot of stuff and likes a lot of games but comparing it to everything else I'd say he was showing how extreme they take some things, unnecessarily. Yes, like running distances for YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE GAME.
