******* Official Football Manager 14 Thread *******

Ive not played FM14 yet, but always buy players over 48 months... thats a given.

There are no detriments to doing so especially in bigger clubs... my Arsenal team for example iirc spent 3 billion quid in like 5 seasons in FM13. All that happens is the TV money/Champions League money ensures you can pay your debts and because you get a huge injection at around the time the board announce budgets... they dont understand about future payments so instantly give you a big wedge to spend again.

The other side to it is, if you start to lose cash for whatever reason... in come a new board and they could be a sugar daddy, so its win win to just dont worry about finances

Think im quitting this game until its fixed, another game drew 1-1 26 shots 15 on target 5 ccc's against a 4 shots 1 on target, its seriously broken.

Things like that do happen quite often tbh.

Player reactions are the only thing that really annoys me. Players demanding new contracts every few seconds....players that would never do that.

can't be long til i get sacked now, went on a 6 game losing streak, Most being 3-2 loss, or 4-3, in one case a 5-4? Won one, but then lost the next 2 3-2 and 4-2

I HATE YOU HARRY REDKNAP...Damn stupid QPR Manager, ended my 9 game win streak when his team scored twice in injury time...Oh well, still sitting at the top of the Championship with Derby and just heading into December. I have also just won, for the first time in all my saves (I am on season 3 with Crewe) Manager of the Month!!

What formation is everyone using?

4411 is working brilliantly for me. I use the DC's as cover and stopper, DLP with support, BWM defend in the middle with shadow striker and TM or AF depending which striker I put out. Some AI teams learnt that if they use 2 DM's they can break up my passes, I can never beat them if they use that :(

I mainly play 4-3-2-1, with a dm, 2 bwm, 2 wingers and a target man. Very fluid, control(one of the board requirements is a lot of posession, passing a lot) Top of the championship by 12 points, top scorers, least conceded.

I also have a 4-2-4 formation that I use for mainly home games, with a target man/poacher combo.

Just like real-life, the Championship isn't complicated, just attack, attack, attack!....will be a different story when I get to the PRemiership

It seems to be more tactics focussed this time round. I thought 13 was bad for that lol.. Now you NEED to know what you're talking about. I am no footballer and I've only learnt the hard way. But I am still learning.

For the first time I cannot get on with attack. I have the most success with counter at the moment. That and balanced tactics. With anything more some of my players are too creative and start making stupid shots. I could change that manually with each player but I don't really understand it all at the moment.

I think the most important thing is to train 3 formations right to the top until you are really comfortable with them, even if they are only slight variations.

One thing I have never been able to do in FM, going right back years ago, is get a defensive midfielder a decent average rating!...in fact, I find it hard to get any central midfielders with a good rating tbh. I am lucky to get about 6.8 over a season.

I think there are many tactical variations that compliment each-other, for example, retaining possession and trying to control the game will not really work with a high tempo, so will be much better if you keep it slow. Counter will not be successful if you don't play proper wingers etc.

Oooh, was 12 points clear, then in the next game, I had someone sent off early and lost 1-0, and in the next one, lost to the 2nd place team!...maybe not as sewn up as I thought....and they have a game in hand

PS. Out of nowhere I have started getting loads of red cards, had someone sent off in my last 5 games now, and hadn't has any before!

Very unrealistic game huh?

For the first time I have specified defenders in the set pieces to cover the bases. It is definitely helping. I always wondered what the defending corners/free kicks was for as i left it at auto.

I wouldn't say it happens often to the same team, normally the team that dominates comes away with the win but so often on this game I dominate and don't score and draw or lose, doesn't matter how good my strikers or wingers are they will never score one on ones with the keepers. Its seriously irritating! I could imagine manu over the last few years dominating games all season and finishing mid table due to conceding from a couple shots on target from opposition and dropping points.

Why are team incapable of following tactics? pass shorter so they hoof ball, high tempo so they pass it about slow at the back, keeper to pass shorter and distribute at the back so he hoofs it all the time, retain possession so they hoof it, shoot less so they cut inside an shoot more.... ive had it with this game im afraid, worst one to date.

I've seen some great things in the match engine. Keepers making howlers! Very funny. One keeper was sent off for handballing outside his area? Is that a red card offence? I've seen a few handballs so far, it's really good to see. I've had one keeper throw the ball slowly and directly to an opponent by mistake :D He then scored, and I've had keepers mis kick badly - so that the ball flies out sideways or even into his own net lol...
