Official Gigabyte DS3 Owners Thread

always good to see ...

Quicky question about sata .... settings in bios Im running 1 sata ... what options should I have selected in bios ...

When I installed Vista 32bit it installed all the drivers required .... (only one I had to update was the G/card) .... should I have installed the driver cd supplied with mobo ?

I'm pretty sure the drivers in Vista are newer than the ones on the CD. But the Gigabyte website will have the newest, especially since the ones in Vista are now a year old (tho Vista will automatically update the sound and ethernet drivers when it's installing its own updates).

If you're running atleast one SATA drive and one IDE drive then you can leave the SATA options on their default settings.

... Ok nice one I thought the drivers with Vista would have been more uptodate ...

I actually have two drives (forgot I fitted a second for backup) .. both Sata and not running in raid ... I was just curious about the AHCI setting and wondering if this should have been selected to run in sata and not just ide ... but I guess this is not the case.

OK, can someone here take a look at my other thread here and tell me how I've managed to screw things up? I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the BIOS settings or motherboard rather than both hard drives simultaneously giving up the ghost. Stuff I've considered:

1. If I made a mistake with the slave/master jumper settings when I set up the IDE hard disk and DVD drive on the same IDE channel would it cause data corruption?

2. Does it matter whether you plug a SATA drive into the yellow or purple SATA ports on the mobo?

3. What are the correct BIOS settings to use? I'm CERTAIN everything was left to default (except maybe I disabled the serial and parallel ports, but that's irrelevant) for the first installation attempt, but when I tried reinstalling with only the SATA drive connected and Windows Setup couldn't detect it I started fiddling both with the settings and the cables - could anything I have done caused this to happen?

I've pretty much written off the hard disks (I haven't yet tried them on the old rig to see if they'll work but I don't care that much) but I MUST know what happened so that if I buy a new drive it wn't happen again! Please help!

OK, 2 people replied to my other thread to say that indeed they have had trouble with the IDE port and the purple SATA ports on the DS3 - has anyone in here had the same experience? And if yes what do you do about it apart from not use them at all? I wanted to keep my old IDE drive, seems I can't cause IDE on this board is iffy!

P965 or P35 DS3?

Personally I had no issues using either the purple SATA ports or IDE on my P965 DS3. I used the purple SATA ports for RAID0 and the IDE for my back-up drive. Tho I used a SATA DVD drive and never had an IDE DVD drive connected at the same time.

And the default BIOS settings should be fine too.

Is your memory set to its correct settings, and have you flashed the BIOS yet?

It's a P35, and all this happened (as I describe in the thred I linked to) as soon as I turned on the computer! I didn't even manage to install Windows (except for on the first attempt, where I ended up with a dodgy installation where the Control Panel applets wouldn't run...).

I didn't check the memory settings but I didn't even touch those parts of the BIOS setup, so I assume they were set to the SPD defaults. I'm using 4 sticks of Crucial Ballistix btw, should I run memtest with them just in case I'm dealing with faulty memory and that's what's caused the data corruption?

If there's a newer BIOS that solves any known SATA/IDE-related problems then I'll flash it, I didn't think to even check.

With mine ( 965 ) I have 2xDVDRW on the IDE, and until recently I ran another 2 DVDRW Drives through an ITE8212 PCI IDE Card. The HDs are all SATA

ORANGE PORTS
0 = Raptor
1 = N/A
2 = WD250
3 = WD250

Purple Ports
4 = Hitachi 80GB
5 = Hitachi 80GB

I did for a time, use an IDE Drive on the ITE Card, but this caused some silly issues that annoyed me... Such as if I used a Maxtor, the PC simply would not go into the BIOS ( Well weird ) and if I used a WD then the DVDRWs would nto be useable ???

But at this time, I have taken the ITE 8212 IDE Card out and only have SATA HDs and one SATA DVDRW and 2 DVDRW on IDE and its fine.

I would be happy to test out a HD and DVD on the one line if you want?

Thanks for the offer, but people who posted in my other thread said that 1 HDD and 1 DVD worked for them, so it must be something else...

BTW is looping test 5 still the best compromise between speed and thoroughness for memtest86? Never usedit on DDR2 before...

oh god yes so many errors! My poor Ballistix! :(

Now testing one stick at a time to see if any ofthem are salvageable....

There aren't any issues with Ballistix and the IP35 DS3 are there? Or with using all 4 RAM slots? (I'm using 4x1GB sticks.) If I want to test in pairs, which pair of slots should I use?

I'm running ballistix with a DS3R fine here..

One of the sticks turned up loads of errors while looping test 5 (though, strangely, it passed several repetitions of test 8 no problem) so I'm guessing that's the only faulty one. I'm currently testing the other three all together just to make doubly sure. It's quite a bit slower when there's 3 than it was when there were 4 though, does dual channel makeSUCH a dramtic difference?

Hopefully OcUK will let me RMA just the one faulty stick. I originally bought 2 pairs of the stuff, but I don't remember which of the other sticks the faulty one was paired to... I suppose they're all identical but I remember back in the early NForce 2 days they used to sell matched sets of sticks to guarantee they'd work together in dual channel, dont know if that's stll the case with modern ram.

How do i update the bios / what with.

Noobish question. Do i need a blank memory stick?

I'm on F2 at the moment i beleive. And when i have my Q6600 on a P35C-DS3R over 3.00ghz it double boots / bsod's and changes my settings to auto. Will an updated bios fix this problem?

RIght, I feel REALLY behind the times asking this, but I only just noticed (despite having put the system together on Thursday - the dangers of building in a badly-lit room!) that the CPU fan header on this thing has 4 pins, and all the fans I own (except the molex ones) have 3 pins! Has fan technology advanced dramatically while I was away? :p Or is it simply meant for 3-pin fans to have 2 different settings (low speed and high speed)? I've been using a 3-pin fan all this time and it's been working fine except that it takes 2-3 seconds to start spinning after bootup. Heatsink feels extrmely cool even after I was running memtest for 4 hours non-stop last night (although obviously I was only running at stock).

Ah, ok, so all I'm missing is a little peace and quiet at times when the motherboard would've lowered the RPM? I can live with that, but which 3 pins am I supposed to be using?

Front three or back three?

The three that are next to the little piece of plastic that stands up next to the pins. It is a guide for the 3 and 4 pin connectors.
