****Official GTX580 user reviews/benchmarking/overclocking thread****

^^ Mines fine at 70% fan with an 850 core overclock, at stock the fans at 60% and it's hardly noticeable, custom fan profile sorts 480 heat and noisy fan out.;)

Its what the 480 should have been (heat and noise wise), its in stock and isnt ridiculously priced.

Are you saying its not a great card?

oh i forgot what part of the forum im on!! i should be saying its crap because i have an AMD card

Its a great card and I love Nvidia but its not worthy of the name over the 480

and the GTX480 will be quicker in any games or apps that cause the GTX580 to approach 300 watt mark.
I thought the limiter was only in the most recent Furmark and OCCT?
I have read reviews where they could use an older version of Furmark without limiting.

From what I understand the system is in two stages, temp and power. I'm not sure if its possible to overide the monitor settings from the driver, but it might. Also the older version of the benchmark may not use the card to its fullest.

Take no notice of the Nvidia hater scaremongering, here's anandtech's power results for a 580, when playing a very demanding game like crysis it uses way less watts than a 480 and playing games is what counts.

Why Nvidia can't see that if Fermi had hammered the HD5970 everyone would have excepted all problems as reasonable trade, even with a 350 TDP.

The Bottom Line

The HD 5970 delivers faster gaming framerates compared to the GeForce GT 580. However, if you look at the actual usability of those frame the picture is a bit different. The GeForce GTX 580 allows a consistently higher level of the gameplay experience compared to the Radeon HD 5970. We were able to game at higher settings with the GTX 580 than we were with the Radeon HD 5970. The most important factor, beyond framerates, is the visual quality and experience returned by the product. The GeForce GTX 580 allows a more immersive, smoother, and consistent quality of gameplay.

The 580 has proven here again to be the better gaming card even when put up against a comparably priced Radeon HD 5970 2GB card.

^^This.

Yes well done, a 480 v 5970, from back in April, very relevant to the review posted by hardocp yesterday with a 580v5970 2GB.

Let me quote that again....

I've have a 5970 4GIG Quadfire setup (as in 2 x 4gig 5970's) and an SLI setup - replaced my GTX 480 SLI with GTX 580 SLI and am now adding a 3rd 580. I can honesly say there is very little in it when gaming, at least subjectively speaking. Benchmark wise, quadfire always has higher maximum framerates compared to SLI, and sometimes massively higher - and I saw no evidence in the games I played that Nvidia has higher minimum framerates like some people say. However the Nvidia setup did seem smoother, while quadfire in some games occasionally hitched and felt like the fps was lower then programs like fraps were reporting. I don't put this down to framerates but micro stutter due to running 4 gpu's. I still run both rigs (quadfire and sli), and while I cannot tell the difference with regards to maximum framerates when gaming, I prefer nvidia because it feels smoother, and I have had less driver issues with nvidia to date. The fact the 580 is a quiet card is a major plus for me.

Amazing seeing raven yet again post a review by hardocp because they posted a positive review on the 580, had it have been negative it would never have been posted. :)

No offence Raven but I'll take techpowerups opinion of the noise level of a 480 over an individual owner of a 480.

With an individual's opinion there is too much scope for what noise level is acceptable, I know my 5870 is right on the limit for my personal preference as to how loud I want my graphics card and I know the 480 will be significantly louder.

He just likes to argue for arguements sake and justify his own spending towards whichever camp he has currently invested in.

Plenty of reviews show the 5970 clearly ahead framerates yet if you point that out you are told it doesn't count because its a dual gpu card. It's still a 'single' card and it's faster - deal with it, it's not like it matters for heavens sake both are very very fast cards and the difference between 112 fps and 125 fps (an example I just pulled from thin air) are not going to be noticed in game!

Thought i would have a read of gtx580 thread see if can gather some decent info on replacing my 5870, what a supprise the same people spouting the $hit time and again. Can you not just get you opinion over once then go out the house maybe? Mods really need to clean these up and give this people a slap.

On topic:
Anyone think we are likely to see some diff coolers showing up on the GTX580 anytime soon?

I agree with you, people posting here that have no intention of posting any benchmarks/overclocking etc of the 580 , and have no intention of buying a 580 in the first place

If there was another forum as populated as this forum i would have been gone months ago,its a shame as these forums are great at times.

I dont think there will be any 3rd party coolers anytime soon for the 580,the 480 took around 6 months until they were available.

Heres a thought, how about all the 580s owners carry on posting and sharing info regarding the card, and the ppl who have nothing constructive to say about the 580 dont post!!!

I believe (but may be wrong) that most of the 480 coolers will fit and as the 580 is meant to run cooler should work equally well if not better.

No, there are new components on the 580 compared to the 480 that wont allow a 3rd party 480 cooler to fit a 580.

Ive researched this already:)

The new cooler on the 580 is great compared to the 480, but imo the 580 could still do with 3rd party coolers as once you raise the core to 900 and increase volts the card still gets very hot.

I have had thermal throttling when running heaven at 925mhz

Apologies then. Thought I saw a post on this forum with pics of both boards (naked) and they looked almost identical.

Won't be long before zalman jump in I suspect. Always liked zalman coolers, very quiet if not run at 100% but I just hate the way they insist on using 3 pin fans and never supply pwm fans that you can connect to the gpu.
