Official Home Gym Building Thread

Has anyone had issues with receiving items from fitness superstore? I placed an order or some plates last Monday which were said to be in stock and still not heard anything.

They are slow, an order I placed 1/11 just came today, apparently is was dispatched 9/11.

Not too dissimilar to my workout area in terms of size. Its plenty. It needs a squat rack in there :p

Aye - I think I'm going to get the Bulldog folding wall one as it should be a good combo of space saving but very stable - also it will be useful to be able to move it out of the way should I ever need access to the rafters to get things down!

Along with that planning to get the Gorilla sports wall mounted lat pulldown which LiE has as it looks decent. Unsure at present how best to attach both to the wall but I will figure that out later :p

Which ones did you order out of interest.

They are the "Easy Clean" ones - the top isn't quite as smooth as I expected but it's more of a "bumped" finish (like lots of little circular bumps) but I quite like it; it's grippy and doesn't feel spongy at all. I went with the 12mm to save money but am going to use some of the leftovers (see the rolled up bit by the left wall) to make some extra crash pads for doing deadlifts over as I have heard 12mm will wear out fast doing that

Update on the mention above about the Bulldog wall mounted rack. I've been keeping an eye on it as it seems to go in and out of stock quite regularly - their FAQ suggests that their UK made products (which includes most if not all of the racks/stands) are being produced continuously so will keep becoming available daily/weekly

The folding rack was in stock last night and is out of stock again this morning but I also noticed they have changed the price from £555 to £572... what do we think? Good old fashioned price-gouging or are they upping the price ahead of an "Amazing Black Friday Special" that knocks it back down to full price?

Is anyone doing anything in their home gyms for leg extensions/curls? I keep getting tempted to swap out the bench with one that has a leg attachment on it, but then I also don't want my only bench to be too big and cumbersome to move in and out of the rack. Any one got ideas or want to share what they are doing?

Could be any number of things, raw materials could be more extensive for example. The jump in price isn't enough to put me off.

But Bulldog's stuff is already so much more expensive than everywhere else it seems? I suppose that doesn't preclude them from marking it up further if the materials go up but yeah, it kinda sucks. I was contemplating getting the Again Faster wall mounted rack @£400 but they are out of stock until January apparently

I need a couple more 25kg plates. Powerhouse fitness have them in stock and they are charging £79 per plate, I checked an invoice I had for 2 last Jan and they were £79 for 2. I can't bring myself to buy them. I get the shortages and ebay sellers gouging but major companies like that, it's just distasteful.
Do you know anyone in the industry that may have a contract with Powerhouse? I've got a friend who works for Leicester City so I just bagged some adjustable DBs (2-36kg) for cost price ;)

Thought I'd cross post this here in case people are looking for kit.

@LiE

I am planning to get that Gorilla sports lat pulldown - only thing is the dimensions on their site are a bit lacking - any chance you could let me know how far out from the wall the lower part of it sticks? (I know the top bit sticks out a bit further but I'm not so bothered about that)

Wondering whether I might be able to put it on the wall directly opposite where I want to put my rack - which would mean I can just move the bench forward out of the rack and it'll be right there to sit on for pulldowns... but unsure if that will make things a bit too tight (I have about 2.5m to work with)

Sure, will measure it when I train in a bit.

@uncle_rufus 74.5cm at the top and 53cm at the bottom.

Appreciate it cheers :)

My bench is about 173cm long, so if I do put the pulldown directly opposite the rack that will be 226cm... with the Garage width being about 250cm that means I'll have about 30cm clearance between the two. Not too bad although it's just occurred to me that the bench will be right in the way of doing low rows if I do that... So perhaps a setup more similar to yours where the pulldown is at 90 degrees to the rack space would be better

Assembled our new exercise bike last night - I didn't have a torque wrench so I just had to estimate how tightly to do things up, hopefully I haven't set it up for problems down the road :s (though given it's a commercial bike intended for many many riders constantly through the day in a gym I expect the wife and I using it much more occasionally will mean it'll last very well)

After putting an order in for a new rack at the start of September, it finally turned up today! I originally had a Bodymax full rack and although there was nothing wrong with it, I wanted to make better use of my space. I've down sized to a half rack with plate storage which means I don't have to have plates stacked up all around the walls and also have a bit more usable floor space. Next up is to find some bumper plates. I nearly pulled the trigger on some a while back but by the time I'd made a decision, everywhere was out of stock. Hopefully I won't have any problems shifting my old rack either seeing as everyone is after one at the moment!

@LiE - apologies to keep bugging you but one more quick question. Have been planning out how I'm going to attach the pulldown to the walls in my garage and the fact that it appears all the weight is hanging off of the wall (e.g. 20kg for the station itself plus "up to 300kg" of weights - though I suspect in practice I won't take it much above say 100kg of weights)

But I was just flicking back through the pics of your gym and I think it looks like you've wedged a wooden block underneath the front of it? I guess that would take some of the weight? Or is it for another reason?

Yea I’ve put a little bit of wood just for piece of mind. Mine is bolted through the log cabin wall so has a little flex in it, the wood just helps a little when weight is 80kg+.

plan is to get something more permanent, just need to find something that can expand/tighten between the gap.

edit:
something like an adjustable furniture leg should do the job. Need to measure.

Good shout, thanks... I'm thinking I may use chemical/resin fixings so I expect it will be rock solid in terms of connection to the wall, but being just a single skin of brick part of me is slightly worried about the wall itself! So a little bit of extra weight relief from below seems like it would be sensible - have to let me know how you get on

From what I can tell the rack (going to get one of the folding wall racks as I think it takes up the least amount of space) isn't so much of a concern as the 2 uprights are still resting on the floor so the majority of downwards weight is taken by them; just need to allow for a little bit of torque against mostly the upper fixings in the case of a bar landing on spotter arms or similar
