Official Home Gym Building Thread

I'm definitely in the pro Home Gym camp... feel like I've saved hundreds of hours already standing around while those bloody students at the Uni Gym I used to go to sit around taking up machines while using their phones and all the other annoying nonsense at a public gym

Anyone seen Mirafit have a new wall/floor mounted Cable station? Out of stock at the moment (of course) but I'm tempted by that one instead of the Gorilla Sports one as it has 2 handles and ability to set the pulley at any height between high/low

It does look good, I may have considered that had it been on sale when I was in the market.

I just need to work out if I have the space for it... Measuring up I would have it perpendicular to my half rack and I think to get it far enough away from the wall to allow for doing double-arm type movements or using a wide pulldown bar it will be almost touching the foot of the rack at the front. Will probably be fine in general but wondering if it will leave me enough space to put the bar on the floor for deadlifts

So I decided to keep all my home gym kit, realistically gyms aren't going to be like they were pre-COVID for quite sometime. When they are, I can still join and find a good balance between gym and home gym.

As @Syla5 mentioned there is a lot of value to be had from home gym kit right now in having accessing and using it.

Smart decision, I just can’t see gyms opening for some time.

Typical that bulldog have in stock my rack and the model that I don’t want :p - that said, I can’t see me back in work any time soon, so fingers crossed, I’m refreshing hourly :D

I've got someone coming to pick up a pair of powerblock dumbells now for double the price I paid. :D

I feel dirty selling them for that but that's the way the bids went!

Supply & Demand yo! :p

Prices have gone crazy. There's going to be a lot of equipment available, cheap and probably barely used once this is all over.

Another day, no Mammoth Lite :( - fingers crossed for next week.

Finally deciding to take the plunge and get a small home gym sorted. Given gyms seem to be shut for a while to come now. We already have a cross trainer so cardio side of things sorted. mainly looking into the weights side of thing. Not sure i will have enough space for a full bar bell set up so likely just going adjustable bench and a barbell set.

What benches and weights are you guys rocking? Budget I don't really have one in mind, not going crazy more like 400/500 tops the adjustable weights seem a bit gimmicky when I can just get separate ones which are even quicker to swap between.

You have 2 challenges at the moment, availability and price. Most places are out of stock or pre-orders with month long lead times. Places that have stock have jacked up the prices.

How heavy do you need to go for DBs? I’d suggest getting a couple lighter DBs for arm movements and some heavier ones for pressing and pulling. 8kg, 12kg, 20kg, 26kg for example.

Benches, you could get a flat bench.

Or an adjustable bench.

Well I'm stuffed now until one of the main sites gets some full sets of bumpers in stock... I don't really want to buy random bits here and there as I'd quite like a nice uniform set, but I feel like I'm going to be waiting forever :( In the meantime I've ran out of weight to add for deadlifts so far, with other movements not too far behind... and the weights I do have are all such small hex weights I end up having to add like 10 plates onto each end of the bar which is just silly and annoying!!!

Origin gets big hauls in pretty frequently, but they aren’t cheap.

I expect the price hikes and Im happy to pay it. its been weeks since I've been able to do anything substantial.

Plan is exactly that, I'm no mass builder so don't need crazy weights but more power in my legs means I will need something heavier to get a good workout in so a range as you gave is pretty much spot on.

Bottom bench looks very appealing and stable as well, so many seem to have the 1 front leg makes me question how stable they are. Any specific weights you'd recommend or just whatever brand I can get my hands on?

Some bumpers in stock here - https://againfaster.eu/en_gb/weight...again-faster-virgin-rubber-bumper-plates.html

Not a bad price considering (they are pairs).

Yea the bench looks decent, just keep in mind those with the leg hooks tend to be a bit higher. Never had any issues with benches with a single leg at the front and I've had many over the years.

Dumbbell wise your best bet is some hex DBs that way you can just source them from where ever has some and they will all be the same.

Yes! Managed to get the Mammoth Lite Spot arms and the dip belt. Just need the rack now!

Thanks for the heads up, got the spotter arms so I can start to push the bench press and also do some pin pressing.

@Snookums here's some stuff to look at.

Can pre-order some DBs here: https://primalstrength.com/primal-strength-commercial-rubber-hex-dumbbells-1-50kg-pairs/

Looks like there are some in stock here - https://www.jordanfitness.com/products/rubber-hex-dumbbell?variant=35598740947093

There's a set here which should get you started weight wise - https://www.extremefitness.co.uk/extreme-fitness-hex-dumbbell-rack-package1
Just need to buy another set to go beyond 20kg.

Some DBs here as well, but will be a slower delivery due to Brexit - https://www.gorillasports.co.uk/hex-rubber-dumbbell-20kg

Cheers... though as above they don't have everything in stock so I can't buy a full set (I would want a full set of pairs so basically a 150kg set). It's kind of stubborn/irrational but I feel like not buying it all at once makes it likely that they might discontinue that set and I'll end up with a mish mash of different plates from different places. I'm unlikely to ever replace them or buy more so I'd like to get a nice neat set (but will probably mean waiting longer)

Again faster are a big player, I can't see them discontinuing them. Just buy what you can now and refresh often to snap up the rest.
