Official Home Gym Building Thread

I can't help but think your knees hurting during a squat is down to form. The machine you bought will keep you strict and allow you to sit back more, meaning your knees won't be going over your toes. I would have personally corrected my squat form than got a power rack, so much better than squatting on that.
This!

Very expensive compared to fixing dysfunction, which is all profit

Looking to buy a dumbbell set, what do people think of these. You don't see many slim style plates around (having the best upgrade potential).

Just ordered myself the Bodymax CF475 and dip bars, £284.42 delivered from Powerhouse Fitness, looking forward to building it!

Well, after yesterdays excitement, today i get an email saying my Bodymax CF475 and dip bars is out of stock for 4-5 weeks

Do you guys think its worth waiting at the price or seek out an alternative?

Up to you, that is a great price.
You have time to shop around and see if someone can price match though.

Might be worth having a look on StrengthShops website, I think they were doing discounted racks recently.

Just thought i would throw some pics of my home built gym. Basically i had it all in one room in the house but my dad wanted to occupy it so i had no room for my rack or bench. I moved the rack and bench outside last summer and kept it under a gazebo. Realising that winter would be coming in the next few months me and my dad started to build a gym at the bottom of the garden with the idea of it being half gym/half storage. There was an absolute tons of work ahead.

First job was to relocate the greenhouse and large shed to somewhere else in the garden. Once we found a new location for them, the ground then had to be slabbed and then it was on to disassembly moving and reassembly of shed and greenhouse. This took ages because the shed panels were very heavy for my dad who's 72 and has arthritis. Also the greenhouse had to have every pane of glass removed so we could move the frame up the garden.

We then had a base to work on to build the new gym. We couldn't start on building it right away because the 115 year old wall behind had crumbled to bits so that had to be rebuilt. Then there was a huge 6x6ft square hole in the gym base where the greenhouse once sat, so that had to be filled in with lots of rubble and concrete. After doing all the above, we finally had a reasonably flat solid concrete base to work on. We ordered the 400 breeze blocks and 4 tons of sand and proceeded to build the ******. The building materials were dropped off on the driveway which meant hundreds of trips back and forth carrying wheelbarrow loads of sand/cement/blocks.

Building the blocks up was fun actually. Me or my dad had never done bricklaying to this level before, so we ordered a bricky tool. This made it as easy as you're gonna get it and was fantastic. Winter set in and we had that real bad snow and all my poor equipment was still outside under the gazebo. Spring came round and i finished the rest off throughout the spring and into summer. I then moved out of my dads and didn't have time to do any gym work because i was so busy doing my own house up. All that is about to change now though. My house is 85% complete bar the kitchen and a bit of gardening, so i'm getting back into the gym stuff.

I understand that the equipment i have is of beginners grade but i have over 200KG of plates so it should last me a while yet. Once i surpass the limit of standard barbells and my cheap ass bench, i'll sell the lot and buy olympic grade stuff. I've only got this stuff because it was dirt cheap and i've had it all years gathering dust in the attic.

All in, the gym has cost around £1k to build. This is for blocks, sand, cement, self levelling compound, roof, timber etc etc. Absolute bargain.

Pics of the build up in progress

Bez... this is seriously impressive mate.

You built an actual gym which not only looks usable but, more importantly, doesn't look like it will be used for something else to make more space.

I like it! I'll see it in a few days too :)

Just ordered myself this bench -

Along with 5-30kg rubber hex dumbbells and a storage rack. Hopefully they should come next week, going to start sorting the garage out tomorrow, then either next month or the month after going to get this cage -

Plus around 180kg of plates and a bar. Only thing so far I haven't looked into is mats which I need to sort out.

I built this last year and it suits my needs.
Yes I did wipe all the dust off and the base of the treadmill is not in the way when I'm punching the bag but I do have to chain the bag out of the way while I'm running.

Selling out my home gym and have some stuff left. If anyone's interested in any items, I'll make a thread in the classifieds section here.

I have a 7' Olympic barbell, with a 28mm diameter shaft.
Squat stands
4x20kg Oly plates
Oly weight tree
Black rubber gym mat

Actually, there doesn't seem to be a classifieds section for random stuff.

Rack £50 (http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image//m/a/marcy_squat_rack.jpg)
Barbell £40 (It's a Strength Shop one that sell for £90, but I got it before they started their black oxide coating: https://www.strengthshop.co.uk/equipment-and-bars/bars/olympic-bar.html)
£1/kg for plates
£15 Weight tree
£10 mat (also from Strength Shop)

The barbell has a very very slight bend to it. You can't really see it, but it's noticeable with if you roll it on the ground. Pretty much every gym I've ever been to has a slightly bent bar.

The plates have a little surface rust. I already restored and sold the other plates with a wire brush and some anti-rust paint, I just haven't done these yet. I have two cans of anti-rust paint though so can do this if the buyer wants. If they don't care, I can knock off £10 for the plates and throw in the cans of anti-rust paint.

Come to think of it, if you go to the Strength Shop homepage, that is literally my stuff in that black and white photo. I took that photo and gave it to Brian the owner to use. That photo is why the bar is bent lol!

Are Valley Fitness the only company that sells the Ironmaster dumbells in the UK? There price in £ sterling is the same as Ironmaster direct in $.

Has anyone used the Olympion quick lock dumbells? They look the same as Ironmaster but has a slot rather than a hole and are half the price!
