Official Home Gym Building Thread

Ordered my matts from horsematsplus ( I think - it was defenitely and equine store). I had previously bought one from fitness superstore and it is practically identical yet more expensive. They are heavy, that's for sure, and awkward to move about on your own as they just flop everywhere!

I have a CF475 (with high/low lat pulley, dip bars) rack & bench for sale, I know you have a preference for the powertec but you could save a few bob. Email in trust.

Thank you for the info on the mats, you saved me quite a few quid. I think I'm gonna go with these ones http://www.horsematsplus.co.uk/shop/rubber-stable-mat-easy-sweep-single/.
They do seem really cumbersome.
The other ones have bubbles on the surface, which doesn't sound right.
I am tempted to save money and get the 475, but I'm leaning towards the powertec. The 0% finance they offer on it does make easy on the wallet.

Think those are the ones I have :) You can cut them if you need. A hack saw with a metal blade doesn't work too badly. A bit too heavy duty for a Stanley knife I found.

hey hey,

I am normally an gym goer, but am finding less and less time to get to my local and so am looking at a small set up in my garage where i can go and throw a few weights around when i get some time.

I would like a bench, bar and some free weights - money is tight with a growing army to feed, so i am looking to get more for my cash. Is this a good bench, recommended:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/York-Heavy-...T0T6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349859234&sr=8-1

Any recommendations on where to get the bar and weights from? I have looked on the bay and because i am in the middle of nowhere, when stuff does come up local it goes for silly money!

(6ft 2" and 15st - so a decent bench is a must!)

Looks flimsy.

What do you plan on doing in terms of exercises?
Anyone have any thoughts on this bench:

I've seen one 2nd hand but can't find much info about it such as max weight etc.

I'm aiming to build a home gym on a tight budget so looking for good used bench/power rack/oly bar and weights.
Well it looks solid enough...

Have you tried contacting them?

After quite a bit of searching found a pdf that says 159kg/350lb max user weight which I presume means max loading weight...

Shame as it's a proper commercial one that sells for £270-£415 and looks like it could be as solid as a GFID71 but i guess not...

This is the listing btw: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weights-Bench/140863690240?ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1&ih=004&category=15281&cmd=ViewItem

the same bench seems to go under both the Johnson and matrix brands as Johnson owns matrix.

I believe that bench is only rated to 200kg total. The york 540 is rated to 250kg and also has the option for squats, but there are no safety catchers so you have to be careful.

Amazon has a york olympic bar for £60, rated to 320kg

My concept 2 (Type D, PM3) is up for grabs to make way for another lodger. My CF475 bundle is still available too. Get yourself a bargain.

Mine :)

Hi Guys.
I was sent this thread from a friend and have read it through trying to take everything on board.
I’m planning to build a gym in my house. (12 x 7 ft room) I’ve ordered some rubber mats so now I need equipment.
I can’t get to a gym in my lunch break like I’ve always used to, and nothing is close for evenings.

My question is, is it worth spending the extra money on Heavy Duty parts if I know I won’t reach that level? I’m 5’10, 80kg and like to build lean muscle.
For example I want CF375 with pulleys, as I won’t squat more than the 180kg limit.

Is this a good enough reason not to buy the CF475?
Same with the bench. Can I get away with the £95 bench as the most I’ve pressed is 80kg.

Or should I buy the Heavy duty £150 one
http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bodymax-cf430-heavy-duty-flatinclinedecline-bench.php

Finally, I’m also planning to buy the BodyMax adjustable dumbbells (32.5kg) for pure convenience. Is this a wise move? I read a couple of people suggesting the Ironmasters. But they’re more expensive and don’t look very convenient.

If anyone can help me choose as I’m battling with my conscience about spending more money than necessary. If I take the Heavy duty rack/bench, I’ll want the 90kg upgrade etc, so the price could spiral.
I could get a deal for £800 for a rack, weights, dumbbells, bench. Or end up with a £1300+ bill.
Please help! Say it’s okay to get the non heavy duty parts. I’ll even post photos once its done ?

I'd go for the heavy duty stuff personally and leave out the pulley if money is tight. Do you really need the pulley? Do pullups instead. You can always buy the pulley at a later date, they pop up on eBay from time to time.

I wanted the pully for lat/tri pulldowns, seated rows and cable raises.

I suppose I dont need it yet, but on the other hand I could have the 'kids' rack and pully for the price of just the 'adult' rack.

Its not really that money is tight, its more of I'm tight with money. :)

Why would you get the heavy stuff?
