Official Home Gym Building Thread

Has anyone got any recommendations for gym mirrors that don't break the bank? I'm currently using an old sliding wardrobe door for mine that I stripped out when I moved into the house. It's served a purpose over the years but looks a bit janky.

I got a big one from Ikea. Had it 15 years :D

Has anyone had any success connecting Moofit cadence and speed sensors to windows? Just wondering if I'm missing something as I can't pair them at all.

It mentions ANT+ as well as Bluetooth. I reckon my phone may have picked them up but can't confirm (got to like 5 degrees in the gym lol). Zwift also reckoned it could connect to phone as some kind of Ant+ relay maybe?

Edit: upgraded to a new BT adaptor; works a treat. I also bought an ANT+ adaptor at the same time just in case. Both were found immediately in Zwift. Seems to work good! Not sure if this needs calibrating as it's reporting 18mph and I wasn't even moving, but I guess that could be a quirk of the game. It'd be good to see real time data from the adaptors outside of what the game is messing with.

(PC case is hilariously oversized but I love it, lol - early 2000's nostalgia baby. A case not at all intended to be a pirates wet dream given it holds like 6 burners).

Edit2: @Martynt74 any thoughts on how I've put the cadence/speed sensor? I think initially we didn't think the speed sensor was possible. And is Zwift correct in those numbers it is seeing/does it wildly over correct to account for pausing for a second?

Apologies, never saw your tag till now, although i think sometimes editing a post doesn't run the workflow for notifications.

The cadence sensor looks fine to me, i'm not actually sure how the speed sensor works as it'd likely need connecting to the flywheel rather than the crank as depending on gearing, one rotation of the pedals won't have the same speed on the turning of the wheel, so normally the speed sensor is fitted to the wheels hub.

Worth asking in the Indoor Training thread in the pedaling subforum for someone more knowledgable than me though.

FWIW I stuck my cadence sensor to the crank on my exercise bike and it seems okay - although I'm not bothered if it's 100% accurate really - it being relative to itself is okay for me

Ah cheers thank you.

I think I've attached it to the hub of the flywheel -

There was just enough space!

Apologies. My brain completely confused what I was looking at!

In theory that should work fine. It’s an odd one as to why it shows a constant 18mph.
Maybe try a cycling app on your phone other than Zwift and see if it reads any different?

Going to spend some money today I think -- need bench, adjustable dumbbells, olympic bar and weight set.

Has anyone come across any good deals?

Bench I am thinking the Gym Master GM3 as per Lie recommendation.

These are cheap and work well, added 3 to a wall myself last year, not as seamless as a single large mirror but waay cheaper and can obviously be added/removed based on the space.

Adjustables I’d go with the type that change in length depending on weight.

Are you getting a rack? What barbell lifts are you planning?
Sold out :( But yes this is what I was planning (I think you linked them earlier).

I have a rack - M3. I need a "starter kit" barbell and weights so I can get form right.

I originally had a Mirafit M3 olympic bar which was fine, upgraded to a Primal Strength Austin when there was a sale a couple of years ago for a bar with a more aggressive knurl and have been happy with it, not sure I'd pay the £300 they're asking for now on offer though.

Weights wise I started with a pair of 25kg bumpers (from extreme fitness but can be from whoever really) and then various other metal plates, quite a mixture, and have been gradually selling them off to try and get a little more cohesion but it's for looks more than anything really. But getting a single pair of bumpers (20/25) means you have the correct height for deadlifts and be a little kinder to your floor, and then you can get metal other plates until you have enough, and just keep adding to them as you get stronger hopefully!

I've got a pair of these:
Had no issues and still holding up well 4+ years on, however I'd go for:

Slightly cheaper.

For an Olympic barbell I would go with one that has knurling in the middle, helps with squats I find.

Eg https://www.strengthshop.co.uk/products/strengthshop-*******-bar-with-centre-knurling

did i read that right, £55 for one 5kg disc?!?!

Thanks, think I might pull the trigger on these. Is there a bench and bar kefl sell that's competitive?

The bars are standard and will be fine. It’s only if you really get into heavy lifts that some features are worth spending more on.
