Official Home Gym Building Thread

I might need to move my home gym from my living room to a shed in the garden. I'm looking at buying a shed for this but I'm only finding really small 8x6 sheds. Any ideas where I can find a massive shed?

b and q?

or you could look at building your own from scratch if you know a local builder or someone looking for extra cash

can't help but think a gym membership would be a far better option. in fact an infinitely better option.

can you even do a single leg exercise safely? apart from dumbell squats or dumbell lunges?

your cardio equipment looks wonderful to use also, i imagine staring either at the wall/curtain or the fan for 30 mins or more at a time is exhilarating.

when i get a treadmill, i will be making sure a tv is view-able from said apparatus. in fact it's what most people do who have cardio equipment in their homes.

also correct me if im wrong but your matting seems to consist of what looks like a small rug and a sit up mat, neither of which are protecting your floor from anything apart from minor scratches. any real weight dropped on either will be fun.

i expect super gainz from an elite setup like that.

Good to see strokers in this thread too.

I have an ipad for when on the bike, clips nicely to the front display and Im not intending on dropping weights on the floor - under the heaviest bar Ive got 2 plates to protect the floor anyway. Like I said, starting out so dont have the space or inclination to drop £1k+ on a rack, oly bar and plates and everything else. Gym membership isnt useful either due to the hours worked so its good to have "something" at home for when I get in late.

you do know there is a 24 hour gym in glasgow? which is extremely cheap like £10-20 per month

Yup, but if Im working till 3am I dont want to drive to a gym - Id rather do some work at home so when Im completely knackered afterwards I can crash out.

Im getting PT at a gym in Airdrie once a week with a guy who really knows his stuff so thats a great help too - plus reading the threads on here and checking out the videos people find and post of themselves.

Not looking to get huge or cram tons of hours a week - just doing my bit when I get time inbetween work and other stuff really.

Thanks for info. I'll pay a visit to my local b and q and see what they have on display so I can get an idea of what I can get in there. I found this one which looks massive. I'm going to measure the length of my garden to make sure it fits.

I'm not sure about the height. I have a 475 and the height is 222cm. This shed's 255cm I think but it has all these beams which lower the height to 190cm. I might get the rack in between them.

Building one could be an option. I have a builder that charges £120 per day so might end up cheaper that way.

You can a 475 rack from powerhouse fitness for about £30 a month for a year. They probably have a deal on a weight set too. That way you could squat and bench safely

It is something I am considering, just when I move to a bigger place. I end up moving the stuff around while working so Im not boxed into a 1" wide rectangle :D - pic was mainly just to illustrate the beginnings of the stuff, not how its laid out when Im using it you'll be pleased to know!

One of my mates has just converted a spare room into a cracking home gym so looking to follow that once space permits.

i don't think building yourself will ever work out cheaper, but it would work out a much better finished article if done correctly. those kits are usually cheaper to work with.

also you may need to look into planning permission, iirc if it is easily taken down then no permission required, but if it is a much more permanent type of structure then planning permission is required.

for the amount of money your looking at you could save up a lot more and then add an extension onto your home, remember this will add to the value of the house, so what you could do is get your house as it is re-mortgaged, say for an extra £10-20k, spend that £10-£20K on an extension, should increase the value of your home by a lot and you then have an extra bedroom (2 story extension). you could also plumb in a shower and heating to your home gym if you so want, etc, etc.

an extra £10-£20K on your mortgage isn't going to be a lot more than what your currently paying.

It doesn't matter how your hours vary tho. My girlfriend works varying hours. If she's on 8 - 5, she trains after work. If she's on 2pm - 10pm, she trains before work. If she's on 9pm - 7am, she trains either before or after.

Sorry, I mean, oh woe is you, you have an impossible situation to which there is no solution :(

Wasnt asking for a solution - Ive got one and its fine for me, I could just be like 95+% of the UK population and sit back on my couch but Im at least doing something of merit. Take a chill pill or lay off the androids.

Do what ever works for you bro

I train 8-9pm as its the first hour i get free in the day, would like to be able to train in the morning but takes me ages to wake up and wouldn't be able to maximise gainz

the whole point of this thread is to teach people what equipment they should be buying and what to be avoiding.

his quite frankly terrible setup is essentially the type of thing this thread was made to avoid people buying.

what did you expect by posting the picture?

there's no matting, no safety, no room and no ability to do dead lifts or squats.

i'm guessing the majority of his routine involves chest and arms, maybe some back and cardio too.

quite frankly the fact that your using a rug is hilarious, imagine if you fail a bench and have to throw the bar to the side, your going to damage yourself, your equipment and your floor.

it's like me going into the photography part of the forums and telling them i have been commissioned to do a wedding and then posting pictures taken on my camera phone.

this is why i always tell people to join a gym before buying home gym equipment, so they know what a decent setup looks and feels like, so they know how efficient a proper setup is for gains. he is restricting his own improvement by having a terrible setup.

Home Olympic lifting get-up...

Time has come to buy my own lifting gear.

I'm a wannabe Olympic lifter, with a space that is around 9.5' x 7' that will house a squat stand, barbell and plates (and collars). Flooring is also on the cards.

Looking around, StrengthShop is one site tha tdo an Olympic lifting set-up for around £500 (options depending) which gives me the own-brand barbell and plates. Flooring could be in the shape of rubber tiles (50cm * 50cm) that are 30mm thick. Stands can be from anywhere.

Another option is to go slightly boutique, with some nice Exertrain discs and a random bar for around £1000.

Next above that is a Taishan setup for £1600.

Does anybody have any experience with their own Olympic lifting stuff? I'm looking for:

- Decent bar (sprung steel with bearings);
- Decent bumper plates (specific Olympic ones - the thinner the better);
- Decent flooring (that won't kill the plates/bar or me);
- Decent squat stand (take at least 200kg in weight).

This is a once in a lifetime purchase (to start it off, anyway... ;) ), and I don't really want to spend more than £750 on the lot.

Am I missing sometihng outrageously cheap as a substitute for something I've outlined (flooring, for exmaple?) I'd love to know... :)

double your budget and add another £2-300 and you can have LiE's setup.

there is no point saving big money on weights when they will last you for years if you buy decent ones.

I would go with mats I got from fitness superstore, they are heavy duty, weigh 45kg each! Not the cheapest but can't see the need to buy anything else.

I was thinking of adding a body solid leg press/hack squat and leg extension but I found this cheap local gym that's £20 a month. It has a technogym leg press and leg extension plus several other machines that I don't really need or use. I tried the gym company once and they have really cheap budget machines that aren't any good.
The freeweights are a joke. No bench press station let alone a power rack, only a utility bench and an olympic barbell that goes up to a whopping 50kg. The dumbbells only go to 20kg.
So what I plan on doing is barbell training at home and use this gym to blast my legs with leg extensions and leg presses. The leg extension only goes up to 95kg, last time I used it was with 80kg.
