Official Home Gym Building Thread

A mate got a punch bag holder with a chin bar built in from the rainforest site. He said it works really well, but it bolts to the wall so would that not work in your case?

I can ask him for the link if your interested.

Finally constructed my GYMANO rack : Took just under 2.5 hours as I was really taking my time. Here's a pic:

Overall I'm very happy with it, it's very sturdy and fits perfectly in my space. Did some pull ups and used the lat pull down, the rack felt very solid :) For the price this is a steal, I can't see how the C415 is worth the extra £200+. My only issue is with the bar catchers, they are too long and don't really fit properly:

When I put the barbell on and if there's no weight on it the barbell rolls forward because of the loose fitting. It's not too much of problem, more of a little lacking in quality. Also the lat pull down is straight and doesn't have dips in it so can't be rused for narrow grip lat pull down and tricep pulls. Any questions about the rack let me know, I can't recommend it enough.

£245 for the rack with delivery. Two 6 foot by 4 foot mats costing £45 each including delivery So that's £335 total. I had my bar and weights from before.

Few new bits -

Some new plates (110kg there, due some more tomorrow missed from the order) -

New Body Solid weights tree, so much better than my other one -

And lastly some new collars because the spring ones i had are crap and didn't feel overly safe -

Coming tomorrow (cover your eyes Pyscho Sonny) i also have a pair of dumbbell handles as i need something heavier than the 30kg my set goes up to and i couldn't afford to splash out on individual one's at the moment so they should put me on.

Can someone help me with my house deposit so i stop being jealous of the pic updates in here?

Poverty feels.

Thinking hard about getting one of these myself. The pullup bar would be a major part of it for me.. do you reckon the rack is stable enough to handle a fairly vigorous pull-up, like for a clapping pull-up or muscle-up? I'm not talking about kipping here, just a vigorous pull-up action.

I have that! Random question - those screws - do they line up with holes in the bars?

Mine never did (the holes were at the ends?! ) but I never did anything about it.

Nope, like yours the holes are at the ends, doesn't feel like it needs them anyway, seems really solid when you tighten the screws enough.

Not sure what those holes are for ?

How much do you weigh?

Same as me :) You'll be fine it's a very sturdy bit of kit. I'm using the weight plate holders on either side of the rack that came with it, this makes it even more sturdier.

That's what I wanted to hear :D. Many thanks for the info!

What equipment would be needed for someone looking to get into weights (for bulking). Local gym is terrible, so looking to buy some home stuff (limited space to a point..)

Budget is not high (400-500)

Thanks.

you must have more than one gym near you?

it depends on the routine you are going to be doing. the routine i am currently doing requires just a bench and dumbells for instance, which could be bought within that budget.

although if you were going to use a barbell for the same routine you would need a power rack to do it safely, as i train to exhaustion so i literally have to drop the dumbells when im finished a set. your not going to get a power rack even a cheap one into a £500 setup never mind a £400 one.

im trying to get back into squatting which requires a rack but my knee's are so stiff, ache and i have an injury so it's just not happening. i may just switch to dumbell squats and lunges tbh, so again a rack isn't really needed for that either but it would be my preferred option if i was fully able.

put it this way, matting is going to cost you roughly £100 (i have spent over double that on matting for my large setup, yet i still need more) alone, so that leaves you what £300-£400 for the rest.

a half decent bench is going to be around £200. leaving you £100 - £200 for weights which is achievable but your going to be limited as to what you can do safely unless that £100-£200 is spent on dumbells, which again after buying decent clamps is going to leave you with nothing to spend on weights.

£100 - matting
£200 - bench
£100 - olympic handles
£30 - clamps

these are all "rough" figures, but you can see how £500 is going to get you very little brand new.

so you should look into stuff second hand, but decent equipment hold's it value really well.

you would need £750 minimum imo, and again that is minimum, probably £1000 minimum if you want a rack. £1500 minimum if you want a full setup with say iron masters.

Nope, just the one (I live in a very rural place). Weights are quite literally york weights with a couple threaded bars and thats it. One bench and one pull down machine which doesn't work well. Couple treadmills and thats it.

Basically I'm looking to do a hypertrophy routine to increase my mass by as much as I can. I reckon (will know for definite soon) that I'll be in the same place for a year, so can invest money in stuff if keeps its value.

I'm an absolute beginner (6'3, 75kg) so I guess I won't need much in the way of weights? At least at first?

If I didn't buy my planned tablet and cut down on my pc expansion, I reckon I could up my budget to around £700 (I'm happy to buy second hand).

So you reckon I need:

Matting
Bench
Olympic handles
Clamps.

Anything else? Also, will it be safe training by myself? There are others in the house, but I'd be afraid of doing myself injury.

you only need that if your doing a dumbell routine.

what routine are you planning on doing?

e.g. if you were doing stronglifts you would need

a power rack
matting
bench
olympic barbell weight package

which is achievable with £700
