Official Home Gym Building Thread

I sold my Marcy Power 10 rack on the Bay. I forgot to put the longer safety bar in the package, but the buyer did get the standard ones.

He's now raised a dispute as I didn't provide the Olympic sleeve adapters (which weren't for sale as not stated in the description), the single handle for the pulley system (also not for sale as not stated in the description) and the longer bar catchers.

I've offered him £10 refund so he can get a welder to make him some, ideally I want to find some replacement ones but can't find any online, not even third party ones, Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

did you post the rack or did he pick it up?

if posted then it's your fault for not including the missing item(s) if he picked it up then it's his fault for not checking everything over.

olympic sleeve adaptors is this for making a standard item turn into an olympic one? did this come with the rack originally or did you buy it separately? if it came with the rack i would expect it to be with the package even if it was not stated.

same goes for the handle for the pulley system, if it came with the original package i would expect it as part of the sale unless of course you clearly mentioned they were not a part of the sale.

it's like someone advertising a car for sale and then when they have sold it, saying the alloys and tyres were not part of the deal afterwards when you drop it off at their house on a tow truck.

as for the longer bar catchers, if you know of a welder who can make them for £10, please do let me know, i'll get him to make me a leg press, ghr as well as a host of other items on a similar sliding pay scale to £10 for long bar catchers.

there's no way they can be custom made for that much, it wouldn't even cover material costs never mind the welder's rate for such custom commissions.

Well they only part delivered. No bar + 185kg of plates, no additional 20kg plates. And no bench.

All in all, pretty annoyed. Built up the rack etc and it's all brilliant stuff, just can't really use any of it!

LiE, do you know how much the Olympic dumbells weigh?

What did you go for?

I cleaned out my garage last weekend to make some space - still haven't ordered anything yet. I think it's between the F430 or Powertec, but part of me thinks they may be overkill and perhaps I should 'settle' for the CF475 or look the 'bay.

I can't fit a cage in my garage, very old house so the garage isn't tall at all. Settled for a simple squat rack which will cover all I need it to. It's a BodyMax one, can't remember it's code atm tho!

no need

Can't even recall what I said?

guys recommendations please, I go to the gym and will continue to do so but would like a bench and adjustable dumbells/set for home. any suggestions? will need 20>50kg dumbell weight minimum

Can you get benches that fold up to a low profile or are they pretty unstable?

http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/utility_benches/york__13_in_1_bench/8071_p.html

that ok?

I've been using that bench for 18 months with no issues, a mate that sometimes trains with me is 90kg and has benched 130kg on it no problem. (it does have a limit of 180kg iirc so I don't recommend going over it)

It takes a bit of getting used to with changing the postitions but after a few weeks you get used to it.

I'm looking to change it though as it's to high for me and don't need the preacher, hyper extension etc.

180? ouch probably not good for me then . I weigh 105, and I bench close to 100KG at the moment., let alone the future.
Might need to get something more expensive I guess, but 100% going to get a mini gym for morning training or when I cant drive to the gym in the evenings.

What are your thoughts on the York fts power rack? There's a few places that sell them but don't have much information about it. They sell new for £500 ish buts there's one on eBay for £300. Tempting.

Thought I'd bump this:

Purchased:
Bodycraft F430 Power Rack
Bodycraft F602 Deluxe F/I/D Utility Bench
Bodymax Studio Gym Mat 6' x 4' x 1"
Bodymax 145kg Olympic Rubber Radial Barbell Kit with 7 ft bar and spring collars

Was about £1,043 on their website, but got it for £940.

Not as epic as some of the discounts on here, but I'm happy with it. Rack/Bench and mats will be here next Friday but weights will be 2-3 weeks. Will try to post some pics.

Edit: Anyone else have the F430? I know it's meant to be annoying with the 'j' hooks, but is it worth buying a second set? I will probably do seated shoulder press anyway due to my height (6' 4") and being in a garage.

I've recently started training at home and I'd like to suggest a couple of low-cost investments that give you quite a lot of bang for your buck:

Valslides
Per http://www.valslide.com/
I think mine cost me about £30. You can also get cheaper furniture sliders and other name brands on Amazon. Great for doing core stuff and also hamstring curls. See some examples of more advanced movements here.

Suspension trainer
This could be something as simple as a pair of gymnastic rings attached to blast straps or it could be a specifically designed system such as TRX or Jungle Gym. Personally I have a Jungle Gym - it cost me about £100 and another £25 for wall anchors. From memory, TRX are quite a bit more but you're basically paying for the brand.
You can do a ton of stuff with these systems - my favourites include inverted rows, push-ups (with hands in the straps), fall-outs (core) and split squats (with foot in the straps). Again, the MacGyver of exercises Ben Bruno has some good suggestions here.

Resistance bands
These really vary in price but I've just picked up some good value ones from MyProtein. I paid about £30 for 2 pairs of different strengths. As well as mobility work, bands are great for adding variation to standard strength movements - e.g. loop one round the bar and stand on it for band-resisted deadlifts. They can also be used pretty much by themselves for various strength movements: band pull-throughs, band rows, face pulls, etc - pretty much any cable-based movement. Also, I'm yet to try this one but this looks like a great exercise if you don't have a cable stack for doing seated rows (yep, Ben Bruno again).

Iffley's resident Austrian has reported that the MP bands have a worse tension/length relationship than the more expensive versions (i.e. you need more length to get equivalent tension). Not important for the majority, but worth noting if you're going to be using them a lot.

I can recommend Bodylastics if you're not looking to spend much - the carabinas are the obviously cheap parts, but the bands themselves and the handles are very decent quality for the price. I should use mine more tbh.

Hi guys new to this thread and very informative. Been training a while and on a lean gains diet just mainly doing compound movements RPT. Have a family now and looking to get a home gym setup. Luckily the missus wants to treat me for my 30th. Budget is close to a grand for a power rack, Olympic bar with weights and a bench. Would need the pull up bars and dip handles. The lat pulley isn't really needed I would add items like that as I go along. I would need matting and have seen multiple places to get this from. I bench about 80kg, squat 100, deadlift 120. All 5 reps so hoping for more gains so need to account for the type of equpment I get. Is powerhouse the best site to use and body max brand?
Any help appreciated for source of equipment and best kit to get for budget

For a grand you're looking at either the F430 or Powertec rack, 160kg weights (20 of which is bar), bench and a mat.

I put my F430 rack together Fri/Sat just gone and it was simple to put together, doesn't rock and when I tested out a pull-up or two on it it had no movement (I'm 16 stone).
I haven't used it yet as I'm still waiting for my weights (165kg rubber set).

Basically take your pick from either Fitness Superstore or Powerhouse Fitness; no other stores seem to offer value for money. I tried to look out for stuff on the Ebay but after looking for a while I realised that when you account for travelling/time etc collecting it it wasn't worth the hassle as second hand stuff isn't amazingly cheap compared to new stuff.
