***Official Ivybridge Overclock Thread***

Got my i5 3570K running at 4.8ghz 1.3v idling at 34-38c.

Oddly windows reports my CPU at 3.4, yet CPU-Z reports at 4.8Ghz :confused:

Anyway, overclocked my memory to 2000mhz up from 1866mhz and kept the 9-9-9-27 timings and 1.5v
 
Got fed up with testing, done so much the last few days but think I've got a 4.5GHz CPU / 2133MHz RAM profile ready to test overnight. Done some testing of the gaming type instead, fired up the original Unreal, not played in over 10 years, bit rusty to say the least.

windows will only display the stock speeds CPU-z will show actual speeds

Well this is what puzzled me.

When i had my old system (i7 920 @ 4.2ghz), windows would report the basic normal frequency, but then it reported the overclock after it.

Strange i guess, but just concerned me a little that it wasn't reporting it this time.
 
Day off today, so I'm trying a different approach to my overclock. Just moved to IB/Z77 from SB/P67 so still getting used to the differences between the two. I'm keeping everything on auto ad just upping the multiplyer until it becomes unstable. So far at 4.3GHz and the volts are 1.256 so hopefully that will allow me to get to 4.4GHz which I'll be happy with although 4.7 is where I want to be :). Using AIDA64 to stress.

From my very little experience leaving everything on auto might not be a good thing as I tend to find that it tends to over volt the CPU. I use an offset value of 0.06v for my 4.4Ghz overclock of my 3570k which results in a 1.212v being applied at its maximum load.
I also reduced the LLC on my board to "normal" as that to can affect the voltages and not just the voltage drop under load.

For 24/7, do you all think it's worthwhile to overclock an Ivybridge 3770K? I haven't had much time to play around but when running at stock during a few tests the processor would auto-clock to 3.8ghz. However, if I change the multiplier to 40 only so I don't have to change volts (instead of 35) and run the same tests, the max speed is just shy of 4ghz but that is also the maximum speed (I was expecting it to turbo higher). So the processor no longer auto-clocks higher. So my conclusion from this quick test is that unless running intensive tasks all the time(and on all cores) it's probably not worth it. It may be worthwhile upping the volts to get a higher base clock but then I'd start getting concerned about 24/7 stability.

my question would be why buy a K cpu and NOT overclock it? if you dont want to OC you should have bought a non K version and just upped the turbo.

as for 24/7 stability only proper testing will determine stability but even then you will sometimes get random BSOD's. temps can sometimes cause some instabilities, what was stable in winter might not be stable in summer?

i have my 3770k @ 4.7GHz @ 1.34v, 10 hrs prime, 20 passes of IBT (max).

I'm not sure that there is a "stock" set voltage...? As it would be dependant on each individual chip, as I understand it..?

I do know that if I leave everything on auto my CPU gets more volts than it needs...

 
Nice! I assume though, that the 3770K will require more volts for the same clock as the 3570K because it has Hyperthreading?

The 3770K chips seem to be the better silicon, so you can expect to get the same or better clocks with them compared to 3570K chips.
 
^^^^ that was the point I was trying to make :)

From what I have read the 3770k tends to clock higher but with less volts than a 3570k, as a generalisation. You are using more volts than me for a lower clock so it might give you something to think about when leaving it on auto :)
 
That's as far as mine is going at a reasonable voltage, going to need well over 1.45V I think to get 4.9GHz. IHS has been removed with direct die cooling and passive watercooling.
