*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

I recently made the move from Gotham to the latest build of Kodi/Helix.

All is fine barring a startling difference in the load time for fanart, strangely not during browsing my library, but during the rotating fanart on the home screen of any skin. I've tried various skins including Aeox Nox and Arctic. I'm left waiting seconds with a blank background every time it cycles to background fan art.

This is over NFS, using two WD Mybooklive devices, which have never had this issue before.

Can anyone help or at least sympathise?

I'm sorry for your loading times dude :(

Is your fanart local?

Mine is set up like this..

Video files are on NFS shares, video DB is on the NAS. fanart is all local on each client.

My fan art is stored amongst the separate movie folders on the NAS. I was considering somehow trying to clone the art on the local XBMC box, it's just annoying that I never had to consider such things pre-Kodi

How do you have it store art on the client instead of on the NAS?

They are generated when you hover on each entry. They are pulled from the internet.

There are many different ways of managing fan art, this is the one that suits me..

I was having the same problem at first, but it went away after a while (a fair while - like a couple of weeks).

I'm not sure about this, but my guess was that it was steadily pulling fanart from online sources for all of the films and TV series I had over that time and caching them locally, and that this not only slowed down the interface whilast it was in progress but also left some films with blank fanart background until it could finish grabbing everything (rather than only displaying those titles for which it currently had fanart, which might be what you'd expect to happen).

Whatever caused it for me, it's fine now anyway.

Kodi (openELEC) / CEC question
A) subtitles on / off from TV remote doesn't work, gui keymapper doesn't detect subtitle button is pressed so cant remap from mce remote setting.
B) is there a global setting so subtitles never play?

I finally took the plunge on a Raspberry Pi2 to hook up to my television. I last used XMBC a couple of years ago but am I right in thinking that if I put all of my content onto a NAS and point the PI2 Kodi installation at the NAS it will pick up all of my content?

Does the NAS/Storage device need to have any special requirements such as a SQL DB? Or can I organise it all into folders and Kodi will organise it the way it sees fit for now?

Nope, no requirements for your NAS to have SQL. However, if it does have one, you could set up your Kodi database pointing towards the SQL on the server, and if/when you add any additional playback devices, you just point it at the server, and everything's already set up, and you can synchronise stuff like Watched status.

As for files on your NAS, for music, it uses only the details in the Tags, and not filenames. However, for videos, it uses ONLY the file path/filename, so you will need to make sure it adheres to a folder/filename structure that's recognised by Kodi.

For films, this is usually:

Films Directory\Film Name (Year)\Film Name (Year).ext

For TV:

TV Directory\Show Name\Series #\Show Name - S##E##.ext

Cheers Confused, thanks for the reply.

Just looking into storage devices at the moment, do people have any recommendations for storage devices? Just looking at the WD Cloud Storage devices at the moment, would prefer wireless but completely open to going with a wired solution as well if the storage device is worth wild.

I recently bought a Synology DS413j for all my media storage. It works very well. Quality piece of kit.

Theres so many different routes you can go & it depends on a few factors.

I've currently got a Qnap TS112, single bay nas. It wasnt that expensive & fitted a 2TB drive. Has the added benefits of having SickRage/SABnzbd etc installed but the processor/memory is a little lacking now, especially with lots of stuff running, however it still does a really good job.

I also recently tested my Pi2 as a NAS, actually performed really well with a USB3 HDD attached, however it was let down by the ethernet which is only 100Mbit but may not be an issue for all. It did max out the ethernet however, which I dont think the Pi1 did. A solid 10Mb/sec would be enough to stream 1080p through the network easily.

A PC would be a lot faster but takes up more space and energy plus isnt all that cheap unless you have most the bits spare. The energy use puts me off. Theres also more powerful NAS but they do cost quite a lot.

If I was on a tight budget, I'd probably go for Pi2 with USB hard drive. Medium range, I'd go for a mid range NAS from Qnap or Synology. Top-end either well spec'd PC or decent x86 NAS.

Thank you for the replies - gives me some food for thought.

I was thinking about having a little HTPC to sort and store files to a hard drive and have the PI plugged into the television pulling from the hard drive.

Just trying to look at and gather information/opinions on achieving a decent set-up.
