*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

I'm having issues trying to set up Kodi on another PC!!

It works brilliantly on my PC as all of my films/tv shows are stored on a hard drive on my PC, but I'm trying to set up Kodi on another PC so it can stream these films/tv shows from my PC to another one. How would I go about doing this?

Thanks!

You have two options.

Firstly, you can centralise your library, so you will have things like Watched Status, synchronised between all clients.

This will require you to set up a MySQL server, share your files, and import your existing library into it, using the new shared folder as a source.

Secondly, you can simply share the files, and set up your new PC with its own database. This is easier, but you won't get useful things like synchronisation of the Watched Status.

Best option is buy a Synology NAS, put some WD Red drives in it.

Put the files on this, ie..

\\nas\movies
\\nas\tv

Set them as NFS shares and give your Synology a static internal IP (for the NAS shares to always stay the same).

Set up a MySQL db on the Synology, set all your Kodi clients to use the NFS share & MySQL db.

This will allow any of your clients to update the movies/tv library, and it will up to date for all clients at the same time.

You can then pause and stop a film in one room. Go to another room and unpause it and resume on that machine instead. Very cool.

Beauty of a NAS is, it's on all the time and uses very little power. So you can have SSDs only in your machines to keep the sound down. Store the NAS somewhere else in the house.

It may sound complicated, but it's easy to set up and there are many awesome guides.

Hi bledd just a question i have an HTPC in my bedroom and use a samsung smart tv as a monitor now my HDD drives internal and external are nearly full. We have a Samsung smart tv downstairs also now if i got a nas would i be able to stream my movie collection from the nas to the tv downstairs via plex?

I agree Synology NAS's are awesome, and support for all manner of application is very good from the community. Google for SynoCommunity to see what apps it can run!

You will want a model that supports 1080p Plex Transcoding. Refer to: https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/faq/577. Group 1 Type 1 devices do it, so DS214play, DS415play, DS415+, DS1515+, DS1815+, DS2415+, RS815(RP)+

I have the DS1815+ because I am crazy like that, but best "bang for buck" will probably be one of the 4 bay models, DS415Play or DS415+. Chuck in as many identical WD reds as you can afford, you can upgrade drives one by one later on which is what I will do eventually.

So i am also thinking of setting up a media server to utilize the features of a MySQL server streaming to the fire tv and another device in my bedroom which i have not yet decided on.

I would prefer to build my own device but i am wondering what software to use and just how much grunt is needed, is there a need to use a i3 cpu or could a integrated solution like a E350 be fine for the job.
Having not decided on the device in the bedroom yet i am unsure weather i will require transcoding but if i know i need to avoid that it shouldn't be an issue.

Lastly windows based or linux as i know it would no doubt have a impact on the choice of hardware and how it is utilized by the system for the likes of transcoding etc.

cheers.

System>settings > System

last tab at the bottom left : toggle it

yeah - i was being thick - spent ages last night and couldn't find it - soon as I posted I checked again and saw it!:D

Having a nightmare at the moment - not used my main amp/kodi/tv etc for ages due to work/family etc - went to watch a movie last night and can't get audio to work properly. Nothing changed but just getting no proper sound from 1080p DD audio etc.

Weird - ati 6450 supplying picture and sound - picture is fine, cable is connected properly, but the pc that streams seems to have the issue with the audio drivers etc - tried loads of installs/uninstalled/rollbacks etc.

Driving me nuts as I've never had a problem with it in 4 years!!

I use Nas4Free on my N36L, installed Plex and MySQL and have both Kodi and Plex distributed around the house. Also holds all of my media files.

Specs of your server if i may ask?

Brainfart... googled the n36l :D

How do youfind it handles everything? have you experienced any issues at all as i had hear it best to stick to intel.

Absolutely no issues at all, installed the software, set up the extensions I needed and never touch the thing, completely headless and hides away in a room connected to a switch.

I play all movies around the house and it performs effortlessly.

Ok - no idea what went on but after loads of messing around it's all working again.

Bascially I had server connected via HDMI to my amp. Getting pictures fine on TV but no sound (not even in windows or Kodi etc)

I played around for ages with sound settings/drivers/upgrading to Isengard/ lastest ati drivers etc - still nothing - no change.

Reinstalled W7 on the main drive - then just kodi and lastest ati drivers - totally clean install - still nothing.

Eventually rolled back to some old old drivers I had 14.12 Omega ones and amazingly it works again. No idea whats' gone on!! Anyway - it's all working again for now! Strange 24 hours !

Yep you really can't go wrong with the HP microserver.

Hi guys, just checking my thinking here, due to set up a PC/Server to run my media library from, is it best using Kodi on this machine or could I use Plex for this, I will then broadcast this across my network to an Amazon Fire TV Box/PC and laptop for now, with potential for iPad at some point, all running Kodi front end.
